Show Car Prep, 97 Porsche 911, 18 hours

The owner of this 97 Carrera contacted me about show car prepping his newly delivered Porsche for the next big RUF get together.

So he dropped it off with me late Sunday and I got started the next day and finished it up Friday.

The car only had 17,000 miles on it to begin with but whoever detailed it before he bought it did an outstanding job. Every part of the engine bay and front bay were absolulely clean and the interior was well groomed also so this saved me a lot of time.

I'll fill you in on the process as I post up pics.

First up is the interior. It was in good shape, but was still 11 years old so I dusted, vacuumed, 303 wipe down and then started applying the leatherique. I've never used leatherique before so this was a learning experience for me....

Here are some before pics of the leather.

DSC06238.jpg

This is Porsche's idea of back seats....:spit:

DSC06239.jpg

I applied the leatherique by hand and let sit in the sun for 2 hours, then threw on another coat and another hour in the sun, then the sun went down so I pulled it in and let it soak overnight.

The next day I applied the cleaner by hand and wiped it all off. For a moment I thought I was wiping off the dye, but it was just dirt. The seats were darker but not softer. I was a little disapointed. Could be they were just well cared for all these years and so there wasn't a dramatic improvement.

I know the lighting in these next pics are different from the befores, so just know that they did seem darker to my eyes afterwards.

DSC06414.jpg

DSC06413.jpg

DSC06412.jpg

DSC06411.jpg

DSC06410.jpg

To basically finish off the interior was the painted back of the front seats, this was the coolest part of the car IMO.

I hand polished them with Zaino ZPC two times, then waxes them with ZAIO and ZCS. They absolutely glowed like the rest of the car when I was done.

You can see the seat backs are also SS paint like the exterior.

DSC06247.jpg

DSC06417.jpg

DSC06419.jpg

Everything you see hear was leatherique'd, dash, steering wheel, door panels, center console, all of it. You can see how nice and dark the black turned out.

DSC06415.jpg

So now that the interior is basically complete, I moved on to washing and claying the car. I start with a 3 bucket process, 1 bucket dedicated solely to the rims, tires, wells and such....then two bucket and clay while wet process.

I was surprised for how nicely the cars been kept to see how badly it was needing to be clayed.

DSC06243.jpg

Okay, so most of you know how to wash and clay a car well enough, I won't go into great detail about that part..:grinno:

Next up will be engine bays, polishing and glamour shots.:woot:

Okay, so now that the interior is basically complete and the car is thoroughly washed and clayed, it's now ready to be fully polished.....but first I'll do the engine bays.

Both bays were nearly immaculate so this was not a huge project for me. There was just a small amount of build up in little groves and places, but nothing major.

I basically did a 303 wipe down of everything and per owners request I put a little shiny stuff on the black parts.

For the black areas and plastic and such I used Zaino Z16 tire shine. I do not normally apply dressings to black plastics and hoses and such as it tends to attract dust, even with water based products.

.........

.....umm, turns out I forgot to document the engine bay process.....:nixweiss

Sorry no pics of the engine bays......:(

There wasn't really much to see anyways, it was all clean and the jambs were polished and waxed and underside of the hood was waxed, but not that big a deal appearantly....

So, moving right along to polishing the paint.:dance

Typical swirls + SS paint = perfection.

It should be noted that the owner was extremely cautious with this car and was very particular about what I used on what parts, like the guages for example, he did not want them cleaned at all since they can scratch so easily....

My process was with rotary, Menz SIP and a white LC pad. I could nearly cut it flawlessly with 1 1/2 passes at 1500-1700rpms. Some of the deeper RIDS needed 2-3 passes but the owner specifically asked me not to do any wetsanding so only a hand full of scratches remained afterwards. fyi.

Here are some before and afters of the swirls.

All taped up sitting in my garage.

Please know that all these pics were just after one pass, some area's required multiple passes to make perfect.

I also polished the clear bras as it had tons of swirls in it as well. I used a black polishing pad with Menz FPII for this at 1300rpms.

Now onto the full sun inspection....

So now I've fully polished the car with Menz SIP with a white pad at 1500-1700rpms 2-3 times in some areas. I inspect it before the final polish is applied to ensure all the swirls are gone. After the sun inspection, if every checks out I finish it down with Menz FPII with a black pad at 1300rpms.

This is before any LSP is applied to make sure the car is ready first.

Let see what the sun tells me....

DSC06324.jpg

DSC06323.jpg

Here you can see what looks to be 1-2 RIDS left over after two passes already and the owner specifically asked me not to wetsand so they will remain till next time.

Don't mind those smudges on the clear bras, they will get wiped off soon enough.

DSC06311.jpg

Okay, now that the inspection is complete and everything is looking good I now polish it one last time with Menz FPII and a black pad at 1300rpms to ensure the paint is perfect for the outdoor show at RUF.

Now that the car has been completely polished out, rewashed, then ZAIO applied and then 2 coats of Z5 (ZFX), all the door jambs have been polished and waxed, all the interior has been detailed and retouched up and the rims and tires have been polished and waxed and treated (rims got ZPC and ZAIO and tires and wells got Meg's Hyper Shine 2.5:1 ratio) it is ready for the glamour shots.

LSP was Zaino Z5 x 2.

Put your sun glasses on.

I have some shot in the shade and some in the sun, I'll show the shade shots first.;)

This is my new background on my computer.:kewlpics

I think this car shines better in the sun personally.

Any questions and comments are welcome cause I know I left out a 1/3 of the process since I just can't remember it all, but I got all main things so.....

Awesome writeup, Josh! That's an incredible car and a jewel with such low miles.

Thanks Porta nad Moutee.

You're right, this Porsche is definately a rare find as well as having the painted seat backs like that also.

The car was really in great shape, that's why it only took me 18 hours, otherwise I bet it would easily have gone 25-28 hours.

Stunning results on a very cool ride . On the areas that were taped, what was your process after you pulled the tape off?

With this Porsche, I would take the tape off some of the seems, but leave it on over the black and rubber parts like you see at the top of the hood or around the windows.

I would repolish the seems with a finer polish and finer pad so there's really no risk in burning the paint on the edges. The areas around the window and that lip on the top side edge of the roof would get hand polished and those areas I hand polish only get about 75-80% better.

I always explain these things to the owners as well so they don't think I can wave a magic wand and make it all perfect. When I do these high dollar details, I thoroughly explain my personal expectations of what I hope to accomplish to the owner so they're don't get unrealistic expectations and I try to always underpromise and over deliver otherwise you'll end up with an unhappy client.

Very cool looking car. Great job, I'd love to see you you do some details in person one day and learn some new stuff, since I am local. The paint on the car is the original factory paint? If so that's pretty amazing.

Josh, sounds good. I have often thought of tapping seems as I always tape off the trim. When I do a panel I just slow the rotary way down so there is no chance of a burn. I do like the idea of not having to worry about that though. Do you find the detail goes faster tapping the seems?

Thanks, yes it is the origional paint. The car is only 11 years old, but for some reason Porsche was still using SS paint.

No, it doesn't make it go any faster or slower.

I really don't tape them to avoid burning the edges, I typically tape them to keep out all the compound powder and build up. That way I don't have to go back and spend all day after a wash trying to clean out the seems.....

JoshVette- Great detail and write-up (per usual ;) ).

I'm struck by how nice it looks with the Z5! I've never been much of a Zaino fan, but I *am* a fan of good ss paint, and that is simply beautiful. Huh..Z5 is about the last thing I woulda thought I'd like on ss Guard's Red.

Oh, and I kinda like the way the owner wanted to keep the processes gentle rather than telling you to simply get it as good as possible. Bodes well for the car's future IMO.

Stunning process on the Porsche Josh! Love the attention to detail and your write up too. Car is outrageous after your work!:drool::drool:

Looks absolutely flawless!!!

Am I the only one who thinks the older style instrument panel looks much better than the current one?
