I've got sheepskins over three years old with 100 washes on them. So, to the contrary, it *is* happening with sheepskins.

Now they are called wool cutting pads.



That's the only difference.

You're right they do last. No ever said they didn't. Just do a CD scratch test with one that has a 100 washes on it and then one with a ShMitt that does.



ShMitt advertiser? Are you a Eurow mitt advertiser? No. Neither of us are advertising or paid for it.

Anyway, I would love to hear your regimen for sheepskin mitt care. Personally, I don't count how many washes I get out of a mitt but I know my ShMItt has far outlasted my sheepskins and with significantly less effort put into care. I don't even put my ShMitt in the washing machine. I just hose it off and it's like new. I could never do this with sheepskin because the knap would lay down after one wash and the only way I could fluff it up would be to put it in the machine. Sure the ShMitt costs more, but my time and wear and tear on my washing machine are worth money to me too.

Machine wash on cold, gentle cycle with no soap. Hang on a hanger that has a clip and let air dry. That's it.

I have a shmitt, and have used it a handful of times. It does work nicely, but I have not done enough cars to write a full review yet. The comment I want to make, with no offense to anyone, is the whole sheepskins are wool cutting pads idea. Its a complete falsity IMHO. Sheepskin mitts are soft where as wool pads are tough. Also, sheepskin users do not wash their cars at 1500 rpm speed.

Again, I do not want to start a flame war here, because like I said, I have sheepskins and use them, and have a shmitt and use it. If I were to choose between the two, I would probably choose the shmitt, but I just wanted to put in my $0.02 on the whole wool pad vs. sheepskin idea.

I understand your point about not washing at 1500rpms. Then just take that wool cutting pad out of the package and wash a black car with it. What would happen then?

I agree with you 100% that the fibers do get rougher with time, but the point I was making was, at least with the wool pads I own, A sheepskin with have to be very heavily worn and have received little to no care to get to the thickness and tuffs of thick hair on the wool pad.

I would hate to wash my car with a wool buffing pad, its very thick and hard. The hair fibers on wool pads, for lack of a better word, are like dreads lol.



I am not arguing that the shmitt is not a nice tool, because it is! My favorite thing about it is the fact that it doesn't shed. Ok, and close second being the yellow backing on it for the lower panels.

Totally agree with you bro! On all you said. I just hate someone bashing something. Not only here but on every site. It just gets old.



I wish someone would do a review of a certain 100 use sheepskin mitt then do up close pics of it. Then a CD test that us Autopians love to see.

I applaud their invention work, but I think this is overthinking the problem. Foam has pluses and minuses as does traditional sheepskin. Both can trap dirt and scratch. The issue I have with foam is that it does not conform to the end as much as sheepskin or get into tight crevices such as around mirrors and window trim. It's probably also easier to clean sheepskin. I just throw mine in the washer on low and it comes out fine.

If you figure 2-3 sheepskin mitts per major detailing season (April to September) then I think your costs are about the same if you assume you want a new Shmitt every season. I don't think any foam will hold up to two seasons, at least not the way I scrub. I'm not sure I would want an old piece of foam for the next season in any event.

I have large hands and the ShMitt has never stressed. It will break at the glue points at the bottom though. This is to let you hand fit in. After that, no more splitting.



It is there softest foam used for applying waxes and sealants. It's softer than any foam I've used to date. It's more aggressive on the back but no more than any other sponge I have ever seen. In fact, I've washed cars with an entire yellow ShMitt made from there cutting foam and never marred any paint.

This will work for the DIY'er but for me no. I wash 20+ cars a week and that would mean alot of mitts. I use one ShMitt per month and then it's turned into an interior protectant applicator.

3 year old sheepskin that used to be sold on CMA with 100 washes. Many may remember the black mitts. I just used it yesterday and here it is hanging up to dry. A far cry from the Shmitt advertising of the way a sheepskin looks.

Here is a collection of some other sheepskins from over the years that have dozens and dozens of washes. Also note their condition. A far cry from the Shmitt advertising.

Here is my car that I washed yesterday that was covered in salt with that black mitt. Please excuse the salt spots from today. It snowed 2 inches here and they salted. This is from a day of driving. No swirls or marring from that 3 year old 100 wash mitt from the picture above. 2 bucket wash, Gold Class soap with foam gun. Duragloss QD to aid in the drying and an Aqua Wax topper.

It's just that it gets old reading the bashing of other wash tools in their advertising and them crashing threads on other sites by the sponsor no less in order to legitimize their own product. That's the most annoying aspect of it all. Or to have their little minions of Shmitt junkies refuse to accept criticism of the product because it doesn't conform to their likings.
