Review: Chemical Guys Bare Bones

Other Products Used:

ARO
Brush
MF

Preparation:

During this morning's wash, I did a number on the tires with a new product and hit the wheel wells with ARO. Let dwell while I was scrubbing the tire, agitated with a brush and blasted with my pressure washer. In normal lighting, it looked pretty good but the halogen showed differently.

Application:

Spray liberally on wheel well and let dwell. Wipe with MF.

Could have sworn I read somewhere that it needed a 24hr drying period but don't see it on the label or the CG website. Maybe it was for a different product. :thinking

Observations:

CG Bare Bones nicely darkens the plastic and leaves a glossy finish. It took what looked OK (in normal inspection) and finished it out proper. I've gotten pretty good durability but we haven't had much rain in a long time.

Does it meet its claims: yes.

Comparisons:

I don't have a competing product.

Pros:

1.- Delivers new looking black, clean-looking wheel well.
2.- Protects.
3.- Easy to use.
4.- Good durability

???:

1.- Ultimate durability. I've gone a month or so but there was no rain during that time.
2.- I know I read there was a 24 hr drying time somewhere.

Cons:

1.- Does not dry to the touch for quite some time.

Final Observations and Summary:

While I haven't tried any of the competitors, I am quite satisfied with the results I get. Great looks and excellent durability. I may try Griot's or CG BtB one day but am not rushing to find an alternative to CG Bare Bones and this kind of product is really low on my priority list. If I owned a truck....

Yeah, most of my customers, I have to point out the wheel wells and inner barrels, too.

Comments and questions are encouraged. Thanks for viewing!

Wow that's after shot looks good. I myself hate to do my wheel wells mainly cause there's only an in from the rim and fender so you can't really get up in there but that product looks like a must try

Chemical Guy's Bare Bones provides surprising uniformity to the fender well area. The after shot make the fender well look as if the car just rolled off the assembly line...

Superb product! :bigups

Great review! :bigups

Another great CG review !!!! I love Bare Bones but at the very end of my bottle my sprayer crapped out and made it drip all over the place. Other than that it was a fantastic product right up there with Griots UCS.

It really does need to be wiped down despite some marketing that says it is spray on, walk away.

Bare bons is my current wheel well dressing... I do like the spray and walk away aspect of it.

I have used the griots uc spray as well and prefer the CG bare bones over it.

I agree it looks very nice but how is this product different from using a cheaper tire dressing such as MUP diluted? I use those as a walk away product also.

Thanks for the Bare Bones review mjlinane. The after shot looks great. How long had the BB been drying for in that shot? Also, I've heard that BB can be kind of sticky or gummy, any truth to that? When spring rolls back around I'm going to use my Meg's HD in the wells so I can compare the look to this. Right now I've just been burning up any junk dressings I don't need in the wells. The one thing I like about the HD is that it is versatile enough that i can use it on tires, wheel wells, and in the engine bay.

Thanks for taking the time to do these reviews. These are really how I pick the products I want to try. I can't afford to buy and try them all! (wish I could)

The pic was immediately after the MF wipe. CG BB is more oily and IME is not sticky.

You know what, I haven't been wiping my wells down after spraying them. Maybe I'll give that a try. I want them to look as close to coming off the factory floor as possible. I was wondering about it being sticky, because I could see that being a problem picking up tons of dust, dirt, etc.

that wheel well looks spotless and brand new. do you think it protects it like wax on paint so that it makes it easier to clean on subsequent washes?

That's CG's story. I drive only city streets and we haven't had much rain for a while so is hard for me to confirm.

Nice review. I've been using GG's version for a while and I liked it but it's more like water and very runny until you figure it out. I can see the thicker product being better as far as giving an even appearance.

Since I'm out of GG I may pick this one to try out next.

Checked this morning and the wheel wells are dry. Applied yesterday lunch. Next time I'll check more periodically.

Wow that is pretty impressive for a spray and walk away. I might have to give it a shot after the winter is over.

Another great write up. I used to use this product and had good results except with durability. It only lasted until the first or second rain. I since have started to use Sonus Motor and Trim Kote (thanks for the tip Dr. Oldz) and it seems to hold up for a long time when you allow it to cure for the propper time.

Wait...is this a WOWA? i thought he mjlinane wiped it with a MF towel...Would be amazing if you got even coverage like that without touching it.

You can use it as WOWA but takes longer to dry. Even without wiping, it evens out to a similar look. I like wiping it because the grape scent goes away sooner. It lingers otherwise.

I can't comment on CGBB but just using a cheap tire dressing sure makes a difference so I can't see how this wouldn't also.
