Removing 2x Fresh Wax - Need Help !

My brother is coming to town and I've committed to doing a complete exterior job on his black 05 Ford Explorer. Paint is in excellent condition, so we aren't concerned about swirls and such.

I plan on AIO, EXx2, then Nattys-Blue. I may use WG instead of EX...not sure yet.

My concern is that he recently, like just this past weekend, added 2 coats of wax (probably turtle wax paste, but not sure) so these will need to be removed. I told him to hold off, but nooooooo he never has listened to me. He has told me that the surface feels very waxy. Ugh!

*** What is the best way of removing this much fresh wax? Will liberal amounts of AIO and multiple applications work OK? Is there a quick and easier way to remove this wax than AIO, like Dawn? Other cleaners I have include 4* UPC and WG Pre-Wax Enhancer. I have an AutoZone and Wal-Mart near by, so I can pick up some Mother's/Meg's/? products but I don't have time to get other products shipped in.

Thanks for your help!

I have a spray bottle that contains a mixture of 91% alcohol and vinegar that I use for tasks such as stripping wax. I think most people just use alcohol though, so I'd probably give it a good alcohol wipe-down. Should remove any wax left on it.

Figured AIO would clean it, but since the wax seems to be on pretty thick I should go over it 2 or 3 times and also apply it more liberally to make sure I get all the wax off, correct?

Good...thanks for the tips, especially that only 1x of AIO to remove all the old wax layers. Somewhere along the line I think I read that the 1st app of AIO was to remove the old stuff, then the 2nd app was the protective acrylic layer.

:woohoo:

Are there any potential problems with using alcohol wipes? Alcohol seems to me would be pretty harsh on the surface. Certainly wash after this and before starting my polish or AIO step? Will alcohol cut through any sealants that might be underneath the wax layers?

Dawn won't do all that much, use a solvent.

Yeah, alcohol will clean most *any* LSP off the surface and no, it's not too harsh. I'd use it before the AIO/polish as sometimes a healthy coat of wax will make for a nasty mess if you don't compromise it with a solvent first.

You could also get a can of PrepSol/PreKleeno/etc. or use some other solvent like 3M Adhesive Remover (which IMO everyone should have on hand).

No need to wash after using the alcohol/solvent, just polish/AIO right away. And yeah, unless you're worried about missing a spot one application of AIO is enough.

Excellent! I picked up some 71% alcohol this AM and a spray bottle so that I think is the best route to go at this point. I don't think there is any of the other cleaners, that you mentioned, in the shops around here.

There was both 71% and 90% (+/-). I assume 71% is fine...let me know if I should get the 90%'er.

I'll approach the task in this manner...

wash

alcohol - spray & wipe

Clay as needed

AIO x2

EX x2

Nattys-Blue

Thanks!

That should work fine. Let the alcohol dwell for a little while so it has time to affect the wax. Use a very soft MF to wipe it so you don't scratch things. Between that and the clay and the AIO you'll get all the old wax off just fine.

Yeah the alcohol will work fine. Otherwise, one application of AIO or any polish will do the job. It's funny you say that the wax is on pretty thick. The layer of wax that remains on the car is going to be the same whether you apply a 2mm coat or a 2" coat. The more you apply, the more you are wasting when you buff off the excess.
