Re-using drying towels

I posted about this earlier, and now I have more questions. I put Gold Class wax on a black car, and it looked stunning. The next day, I QDed it with Final Inspection and added a layer of #26. After I buffed out the #26, it looked bad. Big swirls were everywhere in any light condition. So, at the suggestion of an Autopian, I removed a little section of the wax using rubbing alcohol, then I QDed to clean it up. That spot was as swirl free as a black car can get (except when I looked at it under high intensity lights, I could see some little scratches and tiny minute swirls).

Any clue as to how the #26 gave the swirls after the perfect Gold Class finish?

Obviously, the swirls are in the wax, so what should I do? Dawn wash and re-wax, and this time, not top with #26? The weekend before last, I used FI-II and Meg.'s #9 Swirl Remover 2.0 with the PC. Would it be safe to apply some more #9 2.0, and possibly the FI-II, or is that too much abrasive after doing that only a few days ago? I would like to remove the minute scratches and tiny swirls I found with the high powered lights. Thanks!

What kind of towels did you use? You could have gotten a piece of dirt in the towel when QD'ing or the towels could have just been to abrasive.

If the swirls are in the wax layer as you say more abrasives are not needed. Since the swirls are in the wax layer just strip the wax (Dawn Wash) and then redo whatever you want. Why not just use the #26, it's more durable than the gold class anyway.

I really like the #26 and appreciate it's durability. However, it's an outragously unexciting wax, and leaves a good but banal finish. All it seems to do is seal in what you got, not add depth or shine at all.
The Gold Class, on the other hand, dramatically improves the shine and reflectiveness of the car. The great shine is worth the trade off of waxing once every couple weeks, which is what I would normally do, anyway. Untill I get my hands on some Klasse, it's Meguiar's waxes for now. And despite the normal vibe at Autopia, Gold Class is a very reflective wax, based on actual usage, and I believe Carguy is also a fan of it.
Thanks for your help, Showroom!:D

I used to have similar problems. There are oils in the #26 and what you're seeing are the results of pushing those around. If you didn't use a micro-fiber to buff out, I'm SURE that's your problem. I first discovered MF towels when I complained to a meguiar's rep about this phenomenon at a car show. (At the time I was using 3M's paste wax.)

I have a black car, use Gold Class (love it), and occassionally top with Souveran (love it) - but don't have this problem. I really think it is the towels. If you did use an MF, get at least one of meguiar's "ultimate wipe" towels and try it.

One other thing that can affect it, <strong class='bbc'>Chuckmotor [/b], is how long you let the No. 26 set up before you buffed off the residue. I personally like the shine and depth of the No. 26 (BTW, did you use the paste form or the liquid - I prefer the durability of the paste, myself), but if you don't let it set up a longer time when the ambient temp where you're working is toward the cool side, then you do get a few swirls in No. 26.

The colder it is outside, the longer you need to let No. 26 setup. When the temps are in the 50's, I have to let it set up for over half an hour, sometimes an hour. One of the reasons I use more No. 20 - don't have to wait forever to let it setup.

Just my .02 worth.

You also might try polishing with Show Car Glaze first, then topping with #26. I don't believe #26 has any polishing agents in it... I bet that will give you the look you desire.

I used to use the Glaze on my first car (Saturn). That stuff adds a very very noticable shine. If that can't help you layer it on, with polish, about 5 layers of the glaze and 3 layers of Meguiars wax my car looked better than new........ and they said it couldn't be done.

I just received some Big Blue drying towels, and I was wondering if people wash them after every use on a car, or just let them air dry and re-use them a couple of times before washing?

I wash them after every use. Why take chances on some left behind dirt getting on the towel, and then using that towel to dry the car again. Even though the towel may look clean, I wouldn't risk it.

Yeah, that's kind of what I figured. I was wondering if just swishing them around in water to get any trapped dirt out would be sufficient, but I guess just to be safe I'll wash them. Now I'll have to get more of them, because I don't feel like doing a special MF wash after every car wash!

I too wash mine after every detail. It gets pretty cumbersome because we can only do so many details before we are out of towels and need to do laundry.

Which is why I ordered some more MFs, still need to find some good ones for removing polish/wax and stock up on those.
