Supe is a big proponent of this one. So is Holden_C04. It's way more "professional" than the Makita 9227c.

:LOLOL

It was kind of a surprise for me to be so much of a proponent of it... I was really set on getting a Makita after my last rotary died, but after reading up on the Flex and looking at my sagging biceps, I went with the 3403.

Some guys have had problems with them doing thermal shutdowns. Mine hasn't ever gotten hot enough to shut down. When it was new, it did get *very* warm, but now that it has several hundred hours on it, it's not as loud and it doesn't get as hot. Flex does recommend that you keep the pad size to 7" or smaller. I've used the 7.5" LC foam mushroom pads with no problem, though. It's still not as quiet as the Makita, either.

Dewalt 849. Powerful motor and expected years of reliablity. The extra weight (8.25 pounds) doesn't bother me. I also have a Porter Cable 7428 that needs the brushes replaced.

Wow, interesting results so far, I thought the Dewalt 849 would take the lead, guess I was wrong and there is more Metabos than I thought !

Keep it coming guys !

Chicago Rotary........

As of now, I can't think of spending much money for a metabo or makitas

$30 works for me. If I get more business, then I'll upgrade

I really enjoy the makita 9227c because of its weight, its own weight is enough most of the time! but everyone as different taste

Maybe it is just as loud but after several hundred hours on it, your hearing has gone bad. When you wife is yelling at you, does she seem less loud than before?:furious:

On a more serious note, I sometimes wonder if I should be wearing some hearing protection while in the garage with my rotary.

It sure wouldn't hurt, I'm sure most of us could benefit from some hearing protection.

As far as the poll goes I'm surprised the Hitachi hasn't made a stronger showing. There for a while it was really getting talked up on the board, especially after SpoiledMan listed a place to get a new one for $90.00. I guess their price increase and then the short period of time when all vendors seemed to be out of them slowed sales quite a bit (at least with members here at Autopia).

By all accounts the Hitachi is more expensive than either the Mikita or Dewalt at local brick and mortars stores. It is only cheaper online for some specific reason. I believe Hitachi designed their SP 18VA to compete with both the Mikita and Dewalt and gave retailers lower pricing to enter the rotary market.

Heres an excerpt from Chemical Guys website:

"Hitachi to us sounded like the Chemical Guys of Polishers. Hitachi wanted to enter the US polisher/sander market, a market largely dominated by Black & Decker, DeWalt, Makita and Porter Cable. They studied the competition and conducted an extensive customer survey to determine what features users wanted. Armed with this market research and knowledge Hitachi set out to manufacture a better [product, that would deliver superior results, be guaranteed! and most importantly make people happy and who could forget the Chemical guys Favorite COST LESS. The Hitachi SP18VA Polisher, is truly the machine with everything and more."

Yeah, for a while there I thought everyone on Autopia was gonna get a new Hitachi. I looked at them before I bought the 3403, as it was (initially) my first choice. Everywhere was out of stock on them, and there's been alot of people saying they've had problems with them. The trigger seems to be the main source of trouble.

Nope, she's still just as loud as before. :(

I wear earplugs every time I use the buffer. I've lost way too much hearing to loud airplanes and loud firearms to sacrifice any more to buffing.

Ear protection is a good idea, Supe. JoshVette also had an excellent idea - using masks during polishing. Menzerna polishes apparently contain some nasty stuff, though there is little mention of them on the bottle.

I have a Hitachi and I'm less than happy with it. I've had a few issues with it and I'll probably be going with a Makita and keeping the Hitachi as a spare.

I have a Makita 9217SPC. I think I’m the only one in the world that is still using this machine. When it dies on me I’m going to get another Makita.

I own two Makitas. Both have a few thousand hours on them and have been rock solid. I bought them for the reputation of the brand and because I can get them serviced locally with minimum downtime. Only the cords have been replaced so far.

I've tried the Milwaukee (too heavy and bulky) and the Dewalt (for me, ear-piercingly loud). The Metabo looks nice, would like to try one out when my Makita's burn out...though i'll probably be out of detailing by then...
