One embarrassing moment

I decided to join my local chamber of commerce a few weeks ago. I thought it would be good business. I sent out flyers to the 155 business’s introducing myself and my services. So I get a call from the Roselle Fire Chief and he wanted me to detail his car, and today was the appointment. I picked up the Black Crown Vic (with 400 HP, same as the police cars) I start the car to get ready to detail the engine, I close the door, and Immediately when I shut the door, THE CAR LOCKS! My heart fell to my shoes. Their I am with the Chiefs car, motor running and the car is locked. Now what? I called the Roselle police and told them about the dilemma ( not saying who the car belonged to) and the police man came by in 5 minutes. He looks at the car and says, that car looks really familiar, yeh, I said, You won’t believe this. I tell him what happened and he breaks down in laughter. He opened the car in like 15 seconds with a slim jim. When I retuned the car the whole fire station knew about it. The only thing that saved faced for me was the car was perfect. I spent like 7 hours on the car, used 4 steps on the exterior alone. Two guys want me to detail their personal cars in 3 weeks which is my next opening. Gary

Moral of the story> never close door with motor running. or at least leave the window open.

Good story. But it sounds like it worked out for the best. I'm actually surprised they locked. Usually on the Police Interceptor models they disable the autolock for that very reason (how often do cops get out of their car with the engine running?). :nixweiss

ahahaha, i can just imagine something like that happening to me. thanks for the heads up! that sounds pretty embarassing, but at least you had your work to speak in defense for you

I would think that they would lock incase they have to jump out of the car to chase a suspect... that way no one could mess with their car. If so, the officer would have to be carrying a second key or something like that though. This is just my guess though....

Nope, in police cars, this "feature" is disabled. Cops don't like being locked in OR out of their cars. A locked car is just a little more difficult to escape from should you start taking rounds. At the same time, if they get out for an investigation and come back to a locked car and need to leave quickly, they have an extra step to take. Could be the difference between life and death. Trust me, it's from experience. ;)

Gary........I have not had your experience yet but I did one day go home, after detailing a clients MB, with her KEYS:scared

I got all the way home, emptied out my pockets and in my apron I felt a key.......I thought....."Whos key is this, I just emptied mine on my desk?" Then it hit me........"O CRAP!!" I raced back to the clients work, just a few minutes before quiting time, and placed the key on her desk like nothing ever happened:D

I think in your case the worst thing would have been for the car to somehow engage in "drive" and leave you standing there looking like:eek:

I have done both.... :nixweiss :doh

I used to work at a Ford dealer and they sold the police package crown vics there, Jeeper is right, the only differences are: extra cooling (radiator, tramsmission, power steering, etc.), some minor brake and suspension tweaks, higher amp alternator (for all the lights and stuff), and no speed limiter (even though they only do like 127mph)

Might not be stock though... There are some cops out there with modified vehicles. Some also get to purchase their own vehicles and can do as they wish.

Where might this happen?

Know a guy in Mississippi that was elected constable in his area and he got to pick the vehicle he wanted. They gave him some money and if he wanted something more, then he could put the money up.

Saw a Denali arrive at an accident in Baton Rouge with strobes and sirens on... I'd be a cop or whatever to get to drive one of those around. Edit: Got to add this... This would almost be a vehicle I'd try to rev on. He had dark tint and a band sticker or something on a back window... Would never think he was a cop or detective...

There is a cop in Florida that uses a Lightning

Believe I saw a Turbo 5.0 in North Carolina.

I've got to ask a friend where at but there was a Supercharged, nitrous stang used in a police chase. Was putting down like 500 something HP. I'll have to find out where he's at though.

I think in most cases you will find that these types of cars are undercover or dope seizures. It's not typical of city/county/state governments to purchase these types of vehicles and the liability that is involved (governments deep pockets) should the officer be injured is pretty large. An elected constable is well, not a cop.

A fire chief isn't a cop either. He might get some flexibility in what he can do.

From what I've heard about the Lightning though, it's his and he gets to use it. It wasn't seized.

He's also not an elected official. He's pretty much like a police chief and gets what the city/county gives him. He's a pawn with a bigger paycheck.

maybe this is a little off topic, but the other day on the way to school, my dad and i saw this camaro. my dad told me that it was a cop, and the car was suped up to catch racers. my dad said that the car could probably burn all the races, and must be really fun to drive around. not sure how much horsepower it has tho... it just looked really nasty, and black
