Noob with a Meguiar's Question...

So I just found out that a friend runs a branch or franchise or whatever it is that sells the whole line of Megs...I want to stock up on a bunch of things to deatil with, but I am not 100% sure what to get.

Is there anything anyone knows that I should absolutely positively have? And things I should stay away from or just dont need?

We are going to be doing just autos, if that helps.

The products from Megs that I normally use are: SoftBuff pads, #83, #80, Final Inspection, Plast-X, GC burshes, NXT wash, Body Solvent, Endurance tire gel, and #7. I just bought some new GC SuperSuede and WW MF towels so I can not comment yet but they appear to be good products.
None of Megs waxes or sealants have ever impressed me and their overspray clay is not so great either.

Lots of open ends in your post.
1. For your own use or are you going to be doing this for pay?
2. For hand use or will you have a machine.
3. If you have a machine, is it a rotary or a random orbital?
4. How serious are you about car care and how much time do you want to spend.

If it is just for your own use and you don't have at least a random orbital, you could do a good job with ColorX and NXT Tech Wax from Meguiar's consumer line.
If you will be using a PC, a swirl remover, a polish and a final wax/sealant would be what I would use.
Swirl remover:
If the swirls are severe, #83 DACP or #80 Speed Glaze.
If they aren't bad #82 Swirl Free Polish would work fine.
Polish:
If you use #80 or #82, that should be all you need.
Some people use #7 Show Car glaze, (which I never have any luck with) or #81 Hand Polish which does the same basic thing and is easy to work with.
Wax:
#26 Hi-Tech Yellow Wax is a good canauba wax.
#16 Past Wax is a good wax and preferred by many. It has been discontinued, but there is still some around.
Sealant:
#20 Polymer Sealant is good and they have jus recently come out with a #21 Sealant that seems to be good as well.

IMO, most Meguiar's products work good, but there is some overlap and you need to do some research to keep from buying a lot of products you won't need/use.

You've already got some great recommendations. I would also check out the Meguiar's Detailer Series of products.........

The Detailer Series Window Cleaner concentrate is excellent.
The Wheel Brightener is also very good.
The Last Touch Detail Spray is top notch.
The APC is a fine product.
I'm sure there are other products in the Detailers line that are equally good........... and they are all fairly inexpensive!

I hear a lot about #80, and #83, and even #7 but i dont hear much about #'s 1,2,3,4,9 anymore. Am I that old?? Does anyone use these anymore or have they been replaced with better product such as 80/83?

mr2man,

I'm also an "old-timer" that has used all the products..... a lot! :D

Anyhow, the 1,2, and 4 are "cut-cleaners" (compounds) that most folks here don't need to use. After all, they should be used with a rotary for best results. Even #3 (a glaze) works best with a rotary. The #9 is mentioned around here, and still a poplular product.

The proucts like #80 and #83 are nice "medium" abrasive products that are easier to use.......... especially with a PC.

AHHHHH, I get it......Im already aware of the purposes of the 1,2,3 and so forth because Ive used a buffer for most of my detailing days. I just wasnt sure about the new stuff. Seems to be a fairly PC oriented world these days! Im sticking to my baby...The Metabo rotary....makes the Dewalts and Makitas look like heavy junk. Thanks Boss, Its nice to know there are some OLD SCHOOL detailers here. Do you think they know about Simoniz??? Or, powdered car wash soap? ICK..... :nono

Don't sell the new stuff short. While it works pretty good with the PC, most of it works even better with a rotary in the hands of someone that knows how to use it.
FWIW, Simoniz, Johnson's, Dupont #7 wax and powdered car soap were what I started with about 55 years ago. Still don't know how to use a rotary, though. :D
