Always found Canon to have better imaging guts (good comparisons on dpreview.com), but Nikon is right there...especially in the ruggedness dept. To the naked eye, probably can't really tell the diff between images from the two.

voted Nikon since I have a N90 and a bunch of lens from way back when.

Let me throw in a wild card with the Pentax K100D Super or K10D. I have a K10D and am pretty happy with it. I owned for a brief period a Nikon D80, but wife made me take it back, and when I convinced her that we needed one the K10D was already out. I probably would've been happy with either. The K10D has some very good features for the price. Today's DSLRs are all good, so you really can't go wrong with any of them. Pentax is lacking a little in the long lens category, but hopefully this will be rectified over the next year.

Thanks Andrew !! I use a Tamron 28-75 as my main lens and I use a Sigma 10-20 wide angle for most of the landscapes. I also have a 50mm Canon Lens that is the absolute coolest $50.00 lens you will ever see :)... Its a low light portrait lens that takes incredible pics.

Great lens. There are two, the f1.4 and the f1.8. The 1.4 cost like three times the price of the 1.8. I won't go into the differences here. Both are legendary lenses! When I was looking for one about 5 years ago there was a major shortage of them all across the country, I had to wait a few weeks to get one.

I wouldn't get to overcritical regarding build quality. Sure it's nice to have a good build quality, but not many people are that rough and unthoughful of expensive camera equipment.

And for all the people who think Canon has poor build quality with the lower models. My canoe tipped over and I fell into a lake with my camera. Needless to say it got wet despite my best effort to swim and keep it out of the water. The camera has been fine to this day and that was over 2 years ago, not that I'm suggesting you should do that.

A couple other reasons why I chose Canon over Nikon is that Canon has a service center in Hawaii, Nikon doesn't. Canon also has a wider range of lenses over Nikon. So, its easier to find and re-sell different lenses.

Eh, I don't care what people use at sporting events. If my company wanted to use Canons and supplied the equipment, guess what, I'd shoot Canon!

However, I decided to go with Nikon. I don't think either Nikon or Canon has a clear advantage over the other. They both build top notch cameras with subtle differences. For me, the ergonomics of the Nikon won out.

Try them both and pick whichever fits your hand best.

I have been a Canon man all my life (purchased the original F-1 when it came out) and this was Nikon was king in SLR cameras. My wife purchased a Nikon DSLR last year since her friend had one !!

However, as you said for what we do we will never really the SEE the difference. Personally , Nikon seemed to have the edge on specs at given price points. In the end, it should be on how it feels in your hands and how easy to do the mods you like best (focus, exposure, etc).

I got my Canon Digital Rebel about four years ago. I use it for many purposes, but astrophotography was the main reason. I choose this camera after reading many reviews and also it seemed to be the best value for astrophotography. It still takes great pictures, but the newer models offer better resolution. Canon is my vote.

I wasnt referring to the Canon L Lenses. I have quite a few L lenses myself, but I was referring to the EF-S line. I had a few EF-S lenses, and if you compare the Canon consumer grade lenses, they are FAR FAR from the quality of the Nikon consumer grade lenses. This goes for Canon's consumer SLRs also. Go out and compare the materials used on Nikon D40x vs the Rebel XTI and tell me which one feels nicer in the hand.

I thought the D40 lacked an autofocus motor in the body? Is this not the case? I love the price of the D40 but the lens selections seem limiting.

Please, tell me i'm wrong!

The D40/D40X only has autofocus with newer AF-S lenses. So if you plan on using older lenses or third party lenses you won't have autofocus. IMO that's a step back in technology or just Nikon forcing owners to buy their 'newer' AF-S lenses if they want the Autofocus feature, which most people IMO would, considering how much money they are spending on the camera.

OK, I could say quite a lot about photography, but I will keep it short.

1. Yes, Canon vs. Nikon is lighting the fuse on TNT.

2. Point-and-Shoot? Canon; SLR? That's a bit tougher to answer.

3. Why? Canon Point-and-Shoots in general deliver better quality than Nikons and are much more intuitive to use. In addition, they offer INSANE amounts of bang-for-your-buck. SLRs on the other hand...

4. Nikon SLR = more durable, excellent color delivery, dedicated controls (Nikon D200)

5. Canon SLR = better lens selection, sharper photos, less expensive (Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT)

6. Good website for starting on photography: kenrockwell.com

Incidentally, if you aren't absolutely FIXED on Canon or Nikon, I would strongly suggest you have a look at alternatives like Sony or Olympus, (if colour is your thing, Fuji)...

I have Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT (excellent bang for your buck, crispness A+),

Photographer Twin has Nikon D200 (expensive, but INSANE quality),

Stepfather has Sony DSC-H5 (AMAZING, one reservation, NOT A PROPIETARY BATT!!!!),

Pal has Kodak EasyShare MegaZoom (a little older),

ex-girlfriend has Kodak EasyShare C310 (older) and new Fuji P&S (holy cow, bang for your buck is unbeatable; $100 gets you everything except a viewfinder and manual controls)

Friend has Kodak EasyShare DX7630 (older, hard to find)

...enuff of this... :buffing:
