Nikon questions (and where to a get a deal).

Todd@RUPES

Just a regular guy
My camera was stolen from our booth the last day of SEMA. I was looking at the new Nikon line up and saw the 3000, 3100, 5100.

For what we do which camera offers the most benefit? Also, anybody who knows where to get a great deal on Nikons and chooses to share this information would be a huge help.

Thanks

What kind of scum would steal a camera from a vendor at a trade show?! That's just disgusting, Todd, I'm sorry to hear that happened. Hopefully there weren't any too-important pictures on whatever memory card was in it.

One thing I can say about DSLRs in general is that in large part, your lense(s) are almost more important than the body when it comes to taking great pictures in the context of the work we do. I'm a Canon shooter so I can't speak to the specific strengths or weaknesses of the cameras you mentioned but if you want to rely on the autofocus and other automatic modes (as opposed to going full-manual) look for the one that has the highest number of focus points and the best logic processor.

Thanks for the condolences! I am not as upset about the loss as I am about the fact that some person is going around taking photos with a nice (but older) Nikon that I worked hard to get.

That said, I am excited about getting a new camera and taking more photos. I leave for The Great White North on Thursday so I want to pick up the camera by then. For every jerk there are plenty of really great people, so it is what it is.

yeah i would definitely inquire on that point.... like someone said earlier the glass is what matters in taking picturs not so much the body. i know nothing about nikon either but if you look at photo.net i'm sure your questions would be answered....

Sorry to hear about your camera. Seems like you have a good attitude about it though. I hope you get a nice camera to replace it

If you are going for Nikon (I have a D90), you want the 5100 as a minimum. The D90 is still available but the best Nikon short of the full sensor models is the Nikon 7000. It has a metal body. My guess is the D90 replacement will be called the 6000 but had not heard any rumors of pending release. I still want them to release a 17-60 range zoom with a larger fixed aperture (F2.8 or f3.5) and VR.

Ouch, I went for the D3100 and decided to spend the extra coin on a 55-200 VR lens. (I always wanted one). Ritz had a deal that was $100 off the 3100 and $100 off the lens and since I needed a camera before I leave for The Great White North, I went this route.

Stay tuned for photos later.

Thanks for the help guys.

The Blackfire booth was busy (this is GOOD news!!!!) so it would be impossible to catch the perp.

Life is TOO short to worry about things like this. What is more important to me is that I have an awesome job with great people to work with. I am fortunate!

Too bad I didn't see this thread earlier. I was going to offer to sell you one I found at SEMA for a great deal. ;)

I heard you leaving Saturday morning and couldn't will my eyes to open. Thanks for the great time, buddy! I'm glad to be able to call you a good friend now!

Todd return that thing and go to Costco, you can get the D5100 with the 18-55 and 55-300 lens with a bag for 950. They also have the D3100 and D7000 with two lenses.

Not that it helps you any, but I'm pretty sure your camera was still there when I stopped by to introduce myself late in the afternoon (2 pm or so)on Friday:inspector:. That really sucks that someone would take something like that. We were at AAPEX on Thursday and people were just taking things from the displays like it was all free samples! The vendors had to keep telling people that they weren't for free and some even had hand made signs on their stuff.

It was great to finally meet you and talk Blackfire though!

Todd,

I would suggest you look online at B and H camera in NYC. Very sharp prices and no tax to you in Florida. I would suggest that you bump up the budget to a a D300S and you will never need to upgrade. (Or at least for a long while) If that is too much I would suggest you look at the new One. The tweener camera's are OK but compromise on alot.

Todd sorry to hear about the loss! That sucks, but dont worry i still have all the pics of Sema. Ill post up some of the twins shortly!

One difference between the 3100 and 5100 is the 3100 does not have a body motor to drive non-motorized lenses. It may not be a big deal.
