wolfe- I`m debating this one myself! Approaches I`m considering:
Remove/reduce any corrosion chemically (RustBullet Metal Blast) and then:
-Clearcoat with KBS Diamond Finish
-Paint with KBS RustSeal in Galvanized Steel color (watch you don`t paint them in place, might not get `em apart again!)
-Coat with Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Preserver (threads, not as messy/dirt-attracting as many such products)
-Coat with the Eastwood Black HDAR
The Crown Vic has some galvanized bits (balljoints/etc.) that were surprisingly corroded. They don`t show but, well you know..I cleaned the corrosion off with the MetalBlast, not letting it dwell long enough to eat away the remaining galvanizing. I`m coating with the Amsoil. It has some exposed bolt heads/threads too. The threads will get the Amsoil, the heads will get the Diamond Clear once I`m sure I won`t be taking them apart (won`t paint them in place but don`t want to worry about a wrench compromising the clear). OR...I`ll just spray the Black HDAR over all such stuff and never think about it again, just touch it up if I disassemble. See, I don`t even know what I`ll do on my own project!
