Myths busted

I was waxing a car the other day and started to chuckle at how far I have come with my knowledge in detailing.

I thought it would be fun/funny to hear what you used to think about what products or processes did. Here is one of mine, even though Im a little ashamed of it.
There was a time when I thought......

1. Wax/sealants helped to prevent scratches and chips in my paint.
2. A old bath towel made a wonderful drying towel for the vehicles.
3. Old white t-shirts were wonderful for removing the thick layer of wax I had applied.
4. Armor all made a wonderful interior/exterior dressing, I had gallons!

What about you?

I dont know where the wax preventing scratches came from, probably some crazy infomercial.

And what is wrong with that!
I thought I can polish a car with rotary and wool pad. Burned the pain and got rid of that Cadillac!:D

A layer of wax will remove the scratches/swirls, scratch resistant and make my car shine so I have to put down as thick as possible!!

How many thought that the most common / popular wax sold in the local Walmart / Department store HAD to be the BEST product out there?

My wax of choice growing up was "KIT" - and it was better because it was "creamy" instead of hard in the can...and it protected against the sun!

what crap......

I've read everyone's post so far and all are reminiscent to days gone by....Thank God!! :rofl

  • Bath towels for drying
  • Kit Wax
  • Polishes and Waxes were the same
  • Clay was for kids
  • Compounding a dirty finish
  • Armor All was the best
  • Literally scrubbing the thick coat of polish I applied

Armor all everything.

Turtle wax.

My moms best bath towels.(She sinced passed but I still hear her screaming at me.

Detailing my 1st bike in my moms living room while she spent the winter in Florida.I got caught when she returned early and found black exhaust on the white living room wall.

:yay

I never knew any myths (nothing handed down from my Dad or friends). No one in the family or friends took care of their cars.

I just went from ignorant to awe when I became aware about detailing. The realization there was more than washing a car with Armor All soap, Rain Dance or Nu Finish, and AA Tire Foam. Like many, it was the purchase of a new car that led to research on the Internet.

I can remember being 16 years old and having my dad recommended dish soap to wash the car with and, of course, turtle wax applied via a crappy orbital with a terry cloth bonnet. Ugh!

Yep did that as well, but I dont recall ever using dishsoap, somewhere I realized I needed a car shampoo, I recall using Gold class and Mothers Cali gold. I can remember applying Nufinish with my terry bonnet though.

How about this one. All you need was a few ounces of kerosene in you wash bucket and you dont even need to ever wax your car? Guilty, this was on an old VW Gulf that we had.

Before I ever started detailing, I always thought swirls would level out with regular washing.

Haha! Kerosene! There's a retired GM engineer down the street that swears by it. I can't talk him outta it either! :wall

This brings back memories. This was what it thought was IT when I started in my early teens. Till that "color matched" wax came out.

Speaking of Armor All. I was doing a clients car a while back. They use to own a car wash. I go to leave and there are at least 30 of those scented trees scattered about and this

Vintage Armor All sponges anyone?

Anyone?

Murphy's oil soap & dawn as car wash. The Murphy's was suppose to replenish the oils in the paint and leave protection.
