Meguiars 80/83 vs. Optimum Polish/Compound

yeah i know that, scott, i forgot to add why i say that...LOL

i say it because on a two step job on a mercedes, my original plan was OHC/OC, then OP, but when OC didnt remove as much marring as I wanted with the first pass, I hit it with some 80 and magically it was "GONE"...so i went with a 83/80 process to utilize the filling action as it was going up for sale the next day...I figured it would be sold in a few, so I wasnt really worried about it, neither was the client, whom I told....i explain everything, just because it is easy info to find on the internet anyway, so why lie???

Pat Welcome to Exceldetail.com!

and

Bob http://www.danase.com

are going to have some of the best prices and you can use the Autopia coupon code for them. If you find it cheaper it won't be by much so it would be worth it to order from these guys since we know they offer excellent service :bigups

Thanks Twitch :) I didn't happen to notice what the coupon code is for these two sites. Could anybody tell me what they are :) If the prices are only gonna differ by a few dollars, I'm definitely gonna go for our autopia sponsors :)

No problem man. The code is "Autopia" for both sites I believe.

See Bob's thread here regarding his coupon code:

PM a.k.a. Patrick to find out exceldetail's code.

Take care Mike.

Don't forget that the same combo might not work the same way on every finish. What performs good on a black BMW might not work good on a black Mercedes. Some products with similar cutting potential might not look the same because they react diferently to each finish.

Ah... Dilemmas.. I know that I probably want to use Optimum Polish and Optimum Compound, but i can get both Meg's 80 and 83 for only $27 including shipping. I know that I'd much prefer Optimum if the price were lower, but I'm stuck now...

$27 shipped for #'s 80 and 83?? That's insane cheap. Just my .02, I'd get the Optimum, mostly because I don't care for #83. It's too difficult to work with. #80 I like, but not as much as I like the Optimum stuff. OP, imo, is like #83 and #80 combined. It's not very often that I find the need for OC, but when there is, it's great stuff. You can also mix OP and OC together for OP with extra "bite".

Both are very good lines, but I lean to Optimum.

Same here, unless I am working with single stage paint. For some reason, most likely because Meguiars products have been around when all there was were single stage paint, Meguiars polishes are absolutely killer!

#80 is the more verstile polish out of the two. #83 gums up too easily with a rotary and is not user friendly at all. Surface must be properly washed, clayed and cool before using or it will gum instantly like cornstratch.

In my experience, if you are using a rotary you really dont need anything stronger than OP, just use a more agressive pad. OP can be used with any pad with no problems.

big fan of #80 here....love it...especially on darks (reds blacks blues), and like scottwax mentioned, SS paints.

a final polish with 'glaze' characteristics......awesome.

#83 has been shelved. cant find a use for it anymore...funny a couple years ago, this was so popular around here - everyone used it !!

#84 and #80 is a no fuss combo !!

but to be fair, i havent got my hands on any OP products yet...thought i'd wait for the hype to settle down...

Hm... For Honda paint, do you guys think OP and an orange will do the job at removing washing swirls? I'm on a tight financial leash, so I want the Meguiars, but it seems that the 83 is too finicky, not to mention that I'll probably be working in the sun. Maybe I only need to buy OP and that can do the job of 83 and 80?

Yes, OP and an orange pad should do a very nice job. For another option, here's a black 2000 Civic Si I did a couple years ago, and used 3M PI III RC and 3M PI III MG to polish out. It's very cheap, and you can find it locally. I can't remember what I used as an lsp, I'm thinking PB's EX-P or WG.

Mothers Powerpolish at the local AutoZone

actually, it's not available there anymore. it was part of that .01$ ring up clearance (discontinued for them), including the EO1 bucketless wash, turtle wax platinum paste wax, mothers powerwax, teflon wheel cleaner & spray wax, etc.. a while back...

For a couple of years now I have been using Megs polishes, primarily #80. I really like the rich wet look it gives paint and is ready for putting on your favorite LSP of choice, no need for an aditional polish. However, lately I have started looking for something new to try since #80 is not trim friendly and our vehicles have alot of trim. I usually spend an hour dealing with tape (applying/removing) and I realized I spend more money on painters tape than on polish each time I polish one of our cars. I noticed quite a few people in this thread like the Optimum line of polish. Can anyone comment on how trim friendly or unfriendly this line of polish is?

Thanks

I mixed my #83 and OP together about 50%/50% and it's pretty great. It's the best of both worlds IMHO. You get the initial bite of #83 and the dustless action of OP, you need to use a finishing polish though, OP by it's self works well or FPII.

I think next time around I'm just going to go hyper, #83 is a bit dated.

I haven't had any issues with OP and trim. Of course, when you mix it with #83 it stains but not as bad, you can rub it off with your finger.

People talk about #80 and fillers all the time, I personally think its wrong. I have done tests in the past where I tested the "fillers" in #80 and always found that it removed the swirls.

I'm not saying that #80 doesn't have oils, it has a lot of them, however, I have never found Meg's to really fill anything. Even their glazes like #5 and #7 don't do a good job of filling (not like Menzerna's glaze which fills everything). Meg's polishes are good for adding gloss, but in terms of hiding or masking swirls, they don't do a good job.

I get more "filling" from a coat of #26 then one of their glazes.

:thx :goodjob People that are on the "anti-fillers" crusade ignore that fact that polishes with oils still contain abrasives that are in fact removing the imperfections!! It's not like we're rubbing out with a pure wax that wears away in a month.

Here are some pics of the fillers in #80

Here is a section I taped off of my truck and instilled swirls by buffing with a rotary and wool pad...

Here is another picture (It was 3 in the morning and I couldn't sleep, which is why I had no shirt on)

I made two passes with #80 on the PC

All the swirls appeared gone, but where they "filled". I wiped the area with simple green and alcohol (stupid because it used alcholo swipes which but a little marring back into the paint, which I could see in one direction).

After wiping... Swirls where still gone
