meguiar's #16 alternative

tuffluck,

Check with auto paint and body shop supply stores in your area; often, they carry a lot of Meg's products you don't see in car parts stores.

Mothers California Gold Natural Formula Carnauba (NOT the original formula cleaner wax) is almost a dead ringer in appearance for Meg's #16.

I waxed one side of my truck with #16. The other side with S100. Just to see how they do side by side. (They are on top of WGx3.)

I think the #16 is alot shinier and more "clear" looking.

The S100 went on and of ALOT easier though.

I will keep you posted on how they are doing.

really? can anyone else confirm this? how long does it last in comparison?

btw, i called all of the "professional" meguiar's product dealers and none of them had it.

I've used both extensively; I've used Mother's on about 15 cars, I've used #16 on 4. I've used both twice on my own car, within a month of each other.

It's a much closer match than the S100/P21S.

Do I have a preference? Not really. Both are excellent products. If I had to nitpick differences, the Mother's is easier to apply, the #16 probably lasts longer. Both are "old school" type wax products, real heavy and "waxy".

I just switched from S100 to #16, I have to say I like the look better. It is a pain to remove compared to the S100, but after a 90 degree sunny day, and then 2 days of snow and rain. My Black F150 only needed a quick wipe with a dry MF to clean it up. It had just recieved its first #16.

My wifes Saturn "only" had S100 on it, and it looked like it had been out in the rain for a few days...after the weather cleared up, I washed it and put on a coat of #16. It brought out the metallic in the paint a bit better I think as well.

Bottom line, #16 is more durable, and a bit cheaper. HArd to beat those combos living in Colorado's weather!

Dont just ask if they carry it, ask them to order it. I had my local napa order me some #16, just get the part # from the online cateloge (sp), and ask them to order it. Mine was still under $15 even with shipping

well i bought some of the mother's stuff today. i don't have a detailer's eye, but i hoped to at least see some sort of difference; i figured if i could see *some* kind of difference, it was probably worth purchasing. sure enough, i could see a difference. of course, i don't know how vast of a difference it is, but it's a difference nonetheless.

should i put 2 coats of it on? what about my chrome rims, could they benefit from getting a coat?

You can put on 2 coats, but I would put them on a couple days apart. Most carnaubas look their best a few days after application so, like sealants, they seem to have a cure time.

A sealant would be better on the rims since they can take higher heat.

ha! that sucks man. o well. i am impressed with the mothers, regardless. i actually went to my home town this week, and i'm getting compliments like crazy on how well my detailed car looks. apparently i'm doing something right (the process, not the product!).

one day i'll get a thing of #16 and begin to use it on my car. in the meantime, i'll just stick with the mothers. at least when i get the #16, i'll have something (mothers) to amaze my friends with when i use it on their cars. thanks for all of the help, guys. i've got pictures to show when i get back home. :)

I love #16 and you asking for a alternative? To be hosest with you the only one I coudl think of is COLLINATE #476.There is a big difference between #16 and #26 also there is a big difference between #16 and S100 for duarability. TRY WEST MARINE if there is one near you sometime they have a lot of waxes.........

i actually called a place last week, and they told me they didn't carry 16. i got 83 and 9 from them though. this week i called and they said they now carry 16. i guess i inspired them. i picked up some today, and it did make my day :)

my question is this: i have tech wax and then mothers on my car. how should i go about getting 16 on? just put it on? or should i use another coat of tech wax to clean the mothers off?

also, when i want to reapply tech wax on top of the 16, will i then need to reapply 16, or can i just leave the tech wax on top? does 16 always have to be the top layer, or not? thanks!

i would assume you can just apply the 16, if you do the tech wax some of the cleaners can remove the mothers then you can apply the 16 on top of that. apply then wipe off. 16 does need to be the top layer :xyxthumbs

cool. so the tech wax doesn't necessarily need to go over the mothers? the 16 could just go right on top of the mothers and work just as well as if the mothers weren't on? there are several coats of tech wax underneath the mothers, even though none are more than about a week or two in recent-ivity. :P

what do ya'll think?

i think you should do what you can by hand then apply Tech wax then 16

okay, so before i confuse myself (and others), i need to do which of these? (keep in mind that my car already has several layers of nxt on it and also was TOPPED about a week ago with a single layer of mothers natural carnuba paste wax on it).

1. just put the 16 on right now; don't add a coat of nxt, and don't worry about leaving the mothers on.

2. worry about leaving the mothers on; do one coat of nxt to remove the layer of mothers, then apply the 16.

Just put the wax on; you're overthinking it. If you feel like re-waxing it with something else later, that's OK, too. Just put it on. It's going to look like whatever you last used.
