Married guys...question

GOT PREP?
Though I have been a domesticated monogomous male for more than 10 years, I have yet to take the plunge. Why? Well you see there is this issue with the ring when detailing that I just can't get over.

Married guys, when detailing do you remove the ring? It seems that I would have to. Being cautious and all you know. :-p

Yes my ring comes off. Not only because I'm afraid of scratching the car but also if your ring gets hung up on an edge you can lose your finger or cut it severely.

Speaking as a woman with "decorated" fingers, yes, ALL jewelry comes off before I touch the car!! That includes watches & bracelets!

Yet another lesson taught to me by my father who was a heavy equipment mechanic. As I recall, the moral went something like "It's better to take it off for the job and still have a finger to put it back on when you're done."

There's also the potential for marring to be considered. Same reason I only detail in T-shirts and no-metal (ie - elastic waist) shorts - I'm there to care for the car - not to make a fashion statement.

I always take mine off, when I was a kid my father was a farmer. I use to wear a ring until on day standing on the edge of a tractor I slipped and the ring caught on a bolt and I hung by that finger. I have not wore a ring during work since.

Interesting thoughts.
In my instance, the only time my ring comes off is when I think there would be a chance of catching it on something or if I happen to be working around electricity.
Washing, polishing, waxing a car never seemed to me to fall into that category, so the ring stays on.
The clothing thing also isn't a problem for me doing the same things. Possibly the fact that I m fairly tall and have long arms keeps me from making contact with my vehicles with any thing but the tools I am using. I don't remember that I have ever had any of my clothing, belts, buttons, rings, etc. come into contact with the vehicle. I do remove my wristwatch, but that is more to protect the watch than concern about it hitting the paint.
:dunno

I caught my ring finger on a ladder nothing happened except I filled my pants. Another time when i was first married I was gripping a wrench so tight my ring cut me. After the ladder incident I now go ringless when I feel there's a possibilty of catching my finger on something. I know two people who lost their ring finger. One on a railcar ladder. The other on a dome lid.

Jared - I'm sure they did!! Right before they called the authorities!!

Charles - I'm only 5'3" - with really short arms & legs - so I lean a lot & use a ladder - hence the concern for zippers & buttons.

Rabbi - what's a "dome lid"?

FWIW - At the Meguiar's clinic, they recommended the removal of all jewelry.

rings off
watch off
I don't do bracelets, body piercing, and/or necklaces but they'd come off if I did

always wear:
cotton sweatshirt with sleeves cut-off
cotton gym shorts with no pockets for keys, change, cell phone

if new scratches/imperfections are introduced, as least I'm not directly responsible

if you're detailing under the hood, there's the possibility of getting you watch or ring somewhere between current ("+") and ground ("-") and that'll give you a burn you won't soon forget.

Many old-time mechanics with odd looking scars on their ring fingers and/or wrists.

Rabbi,

That's what I thought, but then wondered what somebody would be doing with their hand up there?

I just don't ever let my hands touch the car. I always have either a microfiber or a wax pad between me and the car. My skin rarely touches the paint. Cars are for looking and not for touching. ;)

The only reason I take my ring off sometimes is because Its kind of a funky ring and it gets dirty. My wedding ring is kind of like a puzzle ring, but it only has two pieces. I'll have to take a picture. Anyway, crud gets between the two pieces and makes it look dirty. Usually I just clean it, but sometimes I take it off if I know its going to be bad.

The reason someone's hand is up there is to open the lid to see if it's a full or partially full railcar or tanktruck and or to pull/take a sample of the stock/product in the railcar/tanktruck.

No rings or watches for me either when detailing. I'll also take them off if I'm doing something messy (like painting) so I won't have to bother with cleaning the jewelry later.

For detailing clothes, I normally wear elastic waistband pants/shorts and t-shirts or sweatshirts. If I do happen to be wearing a belt or something with metal (like jeans), I'll stuff a MF towel into my waistband and let it drape over the buckle/rivet/zipper.

It depends on what I am detailing ...if it has a spoiler or something that is close quarters then it comes off ... otherwise I always have two MF in my hand in case I need to touch the paint so everything is pretty much protected.
I think Dwayne needs to come up with a MF clothing line for detailing:
MF shirts
MF pants
MF shorts
MF gloves
MF apron
MF swim suits (for the ladies)

clarification, please?

. . . then it comes off ...

Then you go on to Dwayne's new line of MF clothing - see my confusion? As an old English teacher of mine taught me, context is EVERYTHING!!!

Sorry, couldn't resist - it's Friday!!!

It depends on what you have in mind :naughty

Actually ... "then it comes off" refers to the ring and Dwaynes line of clothing was just a passing thought.
