<strong class='bbc'>Scooby, from your description. It sounds like you have the newer version. I used the old formula when I was getting the micro-marring and I was also probably using bad technique. [/b]</blockquote>Hey Intermezzo:

How do you know this is the old/new version? I was under the impression that the citrusy one is old, not the stinky chemical one. This has not been confirmed though, do not take this to be a fact. I don't think any of us that have posted know for sure at this point.

I just thought of something. Besides the PPCL itself we haven't made any other distinguishing characteristics. There are 2 bottle types that I know of: A press-down shampoo-type bottle and a flip-up top like the one below.

Pinnaclewax.com displays the squared-off second type I described. This leads me to believe that the press-down top (chemical smelling) is the old one! It must be pretty old because members have been mentioning the citrusy scent of PPCL for some time...

PIC of NEW bottles:

!! I just noticed a sale going on on pinnaclewax.com! PPCL is currently $14.95, but don't forget about shipping. It's still the usual price at CMA.

So those of you who have this bottle pictured above, what's your PPCL smell like?

Mine looks like the one pictured above with the flip top. It is citrusy smelling and the inner seal was a pain in the butt to remove.

It looks like a shampoo bottle, push-in-to-pop-up cap that also unscrews. Smells nasty:D.

BTW, Tim (snake) from Tacscar and I exchanged an email or 2 about this subject and he says that the brand new bottles he has have the chemical smell. A 1.5 year old bottle he has exhibits the delightful citrus smell.

Hey folks,

Terry from CMA emailed me this morning..here is what I found, and what I have replied.

We changed the formula of Paintwork Cleansing Lotion about 2 months ago. A number of our professional users had complained that it wasn't strong enough on older cars. We switched the solvent base from d-limonene (citrus) to a mild mineral spirit. The older product smells like oranges. The current product has slight "chemical" odor and is thicker. Both are totally non-abrasive. We knew in doing this that some customers would prefer the original formula but the new product does a better job of removing old wax and minor oxidation. The citrus-based Paintwork Cleansing Lotion has a shelf life of over two years. When it "spoils" (remember it has a natural ingredient in it) you know it right away because it smells like rotten eggs.

As new technology becomes available, we make running changes in all our products. These changes are usually small and we don't put "new" or "improved" on the label.

If your bottles of Paintwork Cleansing Lotion smells like oranges you have the original formula. If you want to return those bottles I'll be glad to swap them for the current formula. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with the product you have and if you're working on a newer car there is no advantage to you in going to a stronger product.

Happy holidays,

Terry Freiberg

My reply

Actually Terry I have the newer "chemical" formula. Hmmm..Terry, do you still believe the formula to be mild? David Bynon and other Autopia members and moderators have always touted PPCL as a MILD cleanser, recommended for NEW cars because of its gentle cleansers.

I just wanted to confirm that the new product still have this "mild" cleansing in mind. I really bought the bottles to use on a 2001 Ford Mustang, and my soon to be purchased Ford 2002 F-250. If the product is a mineral spirit based product, or a harsher product..I may just return the bottles. Again, I just want to make sure that in changing the product, you have kept that "gentleness" of the original formula in mind.

Again, not to jump to conclusions here..but it sounds like this new PPCL is STRONGER than the originial. Kinda ticks me off as I bought this stuff to work on my NEW cars BECAUSE it was MILD!

Now I get the feeling PPCL is really no milder than other cleansers..but before I go running off at the mouth, let me wait for Terry's next reply.

Thanks a lot for getting that information, SJ. I appreciate you sharing it.:up

This here tells me to take anything this manufacturer says with a grain of salt. Both products ARE abrasive. I can tell you this for sure because I used them to remove slight hazing on my paint. I know it has fillers but it is most definitely abrasive.

But check out my TEST on product reviews.

http://autopia-carport.com/forum/showthread.php3?threadid=5248

The product was actually quite mild in relation to a cleaner wax and KLASSE AIO. That is why I purchased it, I wanted something very mild to compliment my claying, for my car never really gets that dirty. I have a small sample of the new formula, I will do a comparison for what it is worth on my "propeller test" to see the relative harshness. INTERMEZZO330i used this newer version on his BMW and had marring all over it. Too bad they didn't keep both versions and offer people a choice............

I will keep you posted on the test.

I really hope you don't worry too much or at all over the newer PPCL formula. Remember that it is still much milder than just about every other cleaner or polish out there. So don't sweat too much about using it on a new car. Laters

Puterbum,

Oh, OK. I guess the stuff I sent you is the newer forumula, right? The one with the chemical aroma.

Hey Tony,

Yeah, the chemical smelling PPCL is the newer one. LOL this was pretty confusing, glad it was figured it out thanks to the effort by SJ.:up

I need a stiff but safe for textured vinyl bristle brush that one would be shaped like the old school thick pencils to clean some recessed textured plastics. The usual brushes (like my Swissvax) ahve bristles that are way too soft to really scrub.

I guess I could try trimming one to increase the stiffness but wondering what else is available. I do not think the foam on the stick type brushes seen elsewhere would get the crud out in textured areas. The idea is toothbrush like bristles.

How about using flux / acid brushes and trim them to size and shape? I use these frequently...cheap enough to use once or twice then toss out. See Harbor Freight dot com for an example:

Bunky,,

I think what you may want is a boars hair stiff brush that is stiff but safe on painted areas. Detail King dot com, has several versions of this type

Another one they have that I really like is the green one that is shaped like a toothbrush with vinyl stiff bristles on one end (like a toothbrush), and a single row of shorter stiff vinyl bristles on the other end. Its great for getting in those tiny little areas between moldings and paint, or letters that are not too high, and removing stuff. I have dozens of these because they wear out on the short bristle side only. These are like $2.79 each.

Good luck with your search..

Bunky - I thought of another place that sells the little green detail brush I described above - this brush is made by SM Arnold, and it and another boars or horse hair detail brush is also sold at Auto Detail Solutions dot com, out of Chandler, Arizona. The little green one there is on sale at 1.99 each !

Hope you find what you need.
