keyed car

someone keyed the **** out of my car last night. i don't know who it was or why they did it. i had just washed my car, so they probably did it because it was a nice looking car. i also don't know what to do about it. it goes from about my mirror on my driver's side all the way to the tailight. the door portion is mostly just *slightly* through the clear coat and past the fuel door on the back (could possibly be buffed out), but most of the rear quarter panel got it really awful.

does insurance cover stuff like this? my insurance company's name is amica, btw, and i do have full-coverage. any insight or help on this would be great. any chance of self repair? man i hate people so much it's unbelievable.

Wow...I'm sorry man. I believe your insurance should cover it, but of course it would be minus your deductible. I would try to fix it to your satisfaction first, but parts of that look pretty deep. :(

That just totally sucks. Looks like a nice car you have there and for someone to to do that kind of damage has to be sick. Your comprehensive coverage should cover that and like mentioned you will probably have a deductible on it. The scratches appear to look pretty deep in places and to try and touch those up is going to detract from the appearance of your car. Making a comprehensive claim shouldn't affect your insurance rating and you might be able to work with a body shop to have them help cover your deductible. Good luck on whatever you decide.

apparently this is covered as "other than collision," and my rates are a $100 deductible. this is what my policy says, and it does say that the "other than collision" includes vandalism or damage to car, which i think is what this is classified as.

i should probably claim this, then? i know some people say to avoid claiming things with your insurance just because it can make your rates go up, but i haven't dealt with car insurance on my own much in my lifetime, so i don't really know what i should do. i mean, although i might pay $100 to get it fixed, i might get a swift kick in the *** when my monthly rates are increased...right?

yeah, i hope it won't affect my rates. i believe the deductible is $100, which is nothing. i'll call and make the claim next week and see what happens.

does anyone have any idea as to what a paint job like this could cost?

thanks for the compliments on the car, and yes, you were right, it was very nice looking :(

well it all comes down to whether or not the insurance will cover this. if they do not cover this, then i'll try to fix it anyway, because if i fail miserably and make it look worse, i'll just have to get it fixed anyway. as it stands, i'm not leaving it like it is though, and no caring car owner would.

i think some of the work could actually be buffed out. there are places where there is an obvious scratch, but can't be felt with the fingernail. there are other spots where the clear was clearly damaged, but not through the paint. that can be buffed and wet sanded. then there are places that go entirely through the clear and paint, and those will have to be touched-up with paint and then wet sanded down, and then buffed to get the smoothest possible job done.

the only other alternative is a complete fix, which i'm guessing will be somewhere in the vacinity of 2500-3000 dollars.

What makes people want to do these things? I just don't get it. A few weeks ago I had parked my car at the end of my driveway, and the stupid paper ***** threw the paper right at my car... I know this isn't nearly as severe as what happened to your car, but still, some people suck at life.

I really don't understand people that key cars. I guess they see you have a nice car, and are jealous or something, so they figure no sense you having a perfect car if they can't either or something. Who knows, it's just retarted. My mom's 03 Eclipse convertible got keyed a few weeks back, it just makes no sense. Now it's got to go to a body shop to have it fixed, and who knows how much that will cost her.

If I ever caught someone keying my car... I would just rip their head off. It's a sick, sick mentality that they have.

yeah, some people suck at life indeed.

i think it's people that see a nice looking car and figure, "whoever drives that clean and nice of a car must have a great life and everything must be perfect for him. since i obviously have a terrible life, i'll aid in the destruction of one of the many things that he owns that is nice." so yes, i think car keyers are probably some of the most naive people out there in the world.

i really don't know another possibility for why someone would do such a thing. it surely doesn't seem fun, even if it weren't something that someone would SHOOT you for if they saw you doing it. i mean, seriously, cars that get keyed are good looking cars always, no? so wouldn't you think that a car keyer would say, "since he obviously cares about his car, do i think it'd be likely that he wouldn't kill me if he saw me keying his car? hrmm...o well, i'll take the risk anyway!"

hey tuffluck,

hope you get things taken care of :) .

i sometimes wonder when i spend an hour or two detailing and taking pride in our vehicles the autopian way, that people/neighbors who drive by take notice and may egg, key, etc... my car that night to ruin all the good effort i put into (i always walk around my car before i get into it). it seems that when people see how nice something looks that is not theirs, they will get their own gratification to ruin someone else's property. lowlife's indeed. :nono :down

What I've heard is that if someone keyed your car because they have an issue with you, they'll wait until you get it fixed and do it again. After your insurance has a look at it and if they don't want to repair or if your deductible is too high, try the blue wax from turtle wax that comes with the lipstick thing. Rub the lipstick in according to directions and wax the car and it will look OK from 5+ feet away for now. I would do that and see if the vandal strikes again before shelling out bucks to have the whole side of your car re-painted.

well, not to deny your theory, but i live in one of the largest cities in the country and i was really nowhere near where i had been before OR even near where i live. whoever did this did it on impulse, and surely had no beef with me, unless it was something that just happened to take place randomly on the road.

i've used the lipstick trick before, and with a dark colored car, it's really really tough to pull off decently. i had a white car before this one and i REPAINTED panels of that one and you couldn't tell. i wouldn't even dream of THINKING to repaint a navy blue metallic color.

it's either getting fixed by the insurance, getting an attempt at a fix by me personally, or getting sold. but i'm too embarrassed, pissed, and too poor to go any other route.

It takes a coward to key a car!! If someone has a problem, take it up with the owner, not a car!!

Why is it almost always a F-Body that gets vandalized???

most likely it's because someone sees an f-body and they think, "that's a slow car, it's a GM," and then when they race it they realize they were awfully wrong! probably some of the most misunderstood powerful cars on the road, at least the v8 versions of the f-body.

Ummmm . . . ok.

Anyway, Insurance will definitely cover vandalism like this. It's more a question of whether or not the cost of the paint job will exceed your deductible. If your deductible is $1000 and the cost to re-paint is $800 it doesn't make sense to go through your insurance. Although, I don't know the rules in your area regarding when you are responsible for the deductible and when you don't have to pay it.

tuffluck....this sort of behaviour completely sucks. i dont believe violence can cure anything but after constantly having the aerial stolen off my car every friday night (the house is en-route to a pub. i caught the guy trying it again last week.

all i can say is i feel better and he wont be doing it again.

do you have a different opinion? although what i said is right in a generalization, i doubt it has anything at all to do with why someone would key a car. it was a joke, in other words.

my insurance company is coming out tomorrow to evaluate and appraise the damage. $100 deductible is what they'll take out of their estimate, then they'll send me a check and i'll do the rest.

can anyone recommend a place in DFW that can do a good job without ripping me off? i would like someone trustworthy...
