Jalopnik`s Doug DeMuro on Auto Detailing

4u2nvinmtl what is going on the below photo??? Are you snow drag racing?!?!?!
Yeah! My friend and I thought it would be fun to drag race our Jeep SRT`s in the winter (it was -40f on this day). We were also compairing our winter tires, as I`m faster in the summer (by 0.3 sec on the 1/4th mile) but he was faster in the winter (pulled on me by a few car lengths). I was on 18x8 (255/18) Bridgestone Blizzaks and he was on 20x10 (295/20) Nokian Hakkapeliitta tires. We fish tailed alot on launch but it was worth it.

In the end, the Nokian tires proved to be far better than the Bridgestones I had on (in turns and on straightaways). So much for Blizzaks being "the best" I also was told narrower is better for winter but this also didn`t seem to be the case as the black jeep`s Nokians were 2inchs wider.

Cool! Sounds like a ton of fun. Were your friends Nokian Hakkapeliitta studded? If so I bet it gave him a pretty good advantage over your studless blizzaks.

I prefer my vehicle in a presentable form while driving the hell out of it. While I am not one for absolutely perfect paint, it would bother me to see some "advance" swirling. Just like how I would spend time shaving with a classic straight razor to get it right but its no perfect shave, or washing that one stain out of my shirt, at least to the point that it isn`t glaringly discolored right at my left nipple.. or that one soy sauce stain off the crotch of my pants... mean while if I put a price on my time, I can easily buy the shirt and pants 3 times over with the time spent cleaning them... I wear cheap clothing, what can I say? lol... Obviously, all my money comes to ACC now.

Different strokes for different folks definitely hits the nail on the head for this discussion. But all these remarks from Doug is generic at best, for example lets apply his logic for a few different scenarios: What`s the point of collecting knives if all you do is stare at it and spend time polishing it to make sure you have the sharpest blade in your display box? Or why would anyone spend time (ie: hours) cooking an elaborate meal when it all comes out the same way as eating a random pile of fast food within a few hours? Why spend the time cleaning your house if all you`re doing is sleeping in it? (uhhh college students don`t count). Whats the point washing that toilet bowl when you`re going to take a dump in it in 2 hours?!?!?!?

Just saying hehe.

Of course he isn`t wrong, but neither are detailers.

Right. That said...

IMO people who make excuses for accepting (easily remedied) imperfection in one trivial area often find excuses for accepting lower standards in other, more important areas.

As the saying goes:

"A man can be his best only by confidently seeking (and perpetually missing) an unobtainable perfection."

I`ve found those to be good words to live by and I generally try to apply them to every endeavor I undertake.

I think another good reason why we Detail at various levels of sometimes crazy :) and put up with all the things that happen to make it go away within minutes - is for the love of it -

Love that frozen jeep srt race !!!
Looks like those guys from Finland may know a little more about snow traction than the people at Bridgestone... :)
Thanks for posting this up -

The non-studded ones. The problem with studded tires is that most interior parking garages don`t allow studded tires.

Interesting! I wonder whether diffs in your AWD systems factored in as they did for me between Subarus/Audis.
