Is a 12ga extension cord a PITA to detail with?

My old 50' cord is done. Old and alot of abuse. I would prefer to have a heavier 12/3 cord to use with the metabo.

I was looking at the yellow jacket item # 242027 at Lowe's Home Improvement You have to search by item #.

Will a cord this heavy be a PITA to detail with? Maybe I won't find it as flexable as a 14ga cord?

Anyone use a 12ga cord?

TIA!

The yellow jacket cords are great, they are super flexible. I find even the heaver gage yellow jacket cords to be more flexible than smaller gage of other brands.

Thanks guys I am going to pick one up. I checked ebay and other online places and nobody was less then the lowes price for this cord.

According to the link he's getting the 50' for $36.52. I did have to type in my zip code so maybe they change the price depending on your location.

i've been using one of these without any problems, and can be bought at lowes for $12.97...

Any piticuler reason your going with such a heavy cord? Pretty sure 50ft of14 ga. is rated to 30 amps which is more than enough for for most detailing machines.I have a 25ft 14 and 100' 14 ga cord both are overkill for most things like shop vacs and rotary's much less the 3-4 amps of a DA machine. Once you really just do the math you'll realize most cheap $10 cords are more than suffecient for most detailing applications.

Cause I can...;)

The 50ft "orange cord" I had was used around the house for a few years before I started detailing with it. Then it had 2+ yrs of detailing in it and it started to cut out in the middle of a detail with the Metabo. Nothing pisses me off more then when "stuff" does not work right in the middle of a detail.

You would really hate the 6 outlets I had my dad install in my garage. Each pair of outlets is on its own circuit with 12ga wire and a 20amp breaker. TOTAL OVERKILL. :woot2: But I can run my portable AC unit, a few fans, the mytee extractor and a few rotaries when the boys come over for detailing.

This cord is super overkill :woohoo: I use it as an extension cord for the mytee.

I have two Rigid 12ga and like them a lot. They don't stop the Metabo from overheating at times. I don't understand it but the other day it wasn't even warm out and I was using a wool pad at 1600 with IP and it got hot enough to go into limp mode. That was with a 25ft length.

it's funny you mentioned these cause i've been tempted to buy them for a while and IIRC, they carry a lifetime warranty as all/most ridgid products do...

This is funny, I just threw another one of thos damn yellow jacket cords away after last weekend's detail of my car. The jackets on them (as with a lot of other cords) keep getting twisted up to where they get a bunch of knots in them and become impossible to work with. I usually hit a point of frustration with them when trying to wind them up and toss them. If anyone has any suggestions on how to wind up cords with the jacket getting all twisted and ganked up, I'm all ears!!!

on my current extension cord, i use one of these (less than $10) and they have yet to get tangled, twisted, etc...

I bought the Sears Craftsman Locking cord (12 guage) and have found it to be great for detailing. The female receptacle has a push button lock and will lock your polishing equipment to the cord. It's a blue/red cord and I can recomment it if you want a locking extension cord.

I have to use a 12 gage just for my mytie lite extractor. It melted a 14 gage cord. Well I sold it to someone here but when I had it anyways.
