If I put myself on the place of a professional athlete with millions of dollars on the line based upon my making and remaining on a team, I would be hard pressed not try to keep an advantage on my competion no matter what the cost. Yeah their are health risks in the use of performance enhancing drugs but the are also significant health risks associated with drinking, smoking, and overeating, but most of us are guilty of some of these risks without any financial benefits. I believe many people pass judgement on these athletes without really thinking about their risks versus rewards.

Is living the lifestyle you can only dream of, and giving your wife and children anything they could ever want. And possibly never having to worry financially for the rest of your life worth the risk of taking performance enhancing drugs?

Funny you mention salaries in this post, but I read a story (linked from FARK.com) yesterday that said around 60% of NBA players were broke as little as 5 years after leaving the league. I wonder how the numbers match up with baseball and football. I would imagine somewhere in the same ballpark....

couldn't agree more :bigups

Being that sports are entertainment, you would expect that these PAID athletes would do almost anything to keep on top of their game, unlike the Olympics or Amateur sports which should be monitored to keep a fair playing field.
Don't actors who get paid hundreds of millions to make a movie do what ever they have to to fit their part? Professional sports ( even wrestling Jared :D) and congress have no business together. my 2 cents :passout::strong:

That's interesting and of no surprise to me..maybe they should make some financing classes available to them

I know in the NFL they have classes for the incoming guys to show them how to set up accounts and save their money...the problem is the guys not making the money like the allstars still think they do, and run out to buy big houses, expensive cars etc...

That's the ole lead the horse to water but can't make him drink...if they give them the tools and they don't use them, its not anyone else's fault but theirs.

Anyone that makes it onto a major league team has a golden opportunity to make a retire-able amount of money in 5 years, based on a good saving plan...A good friend of mine who plays baseball for Tampa Bay, Johnny Gomes started putting back money in his starting years...today he is late 20's and by the time that he gets out of the game will have enough to retire...
