If you buy a Mazda don't be afraid, get grey.

On the weekend I did a simple detail for a friend's dark grey metallic Tribute. It's about a year old but this guy doesn't take care of his car like an Autopian. He thinks the 2 bucket method is just in case the 1st bucket starts leaking, then you got a backup.

I figured there would be some marring especially on a dark colour.I told him I wouldn't be polishing since it's pointless with him and it was a favor so I'm not gonna spend all day on his car. I did a clay, AIOx1 and SG x1.

The car looked incredible and it wasn't because of me. There is so much metallic flake on this specific grey the car just sparkled when it was done. It also hid whatever swirling and marring it might have as well as my silver car. It's low maintenance like silver while having all the advantages of a dark colour with an overdose of metallic flakes which is quite stunning when detailed and this grey is quite dark.

I assume the 3, 6, RX8 and Miata have the same type of grey metallic. If you want a grey Mazda but are worried that it might be a PITA like black, worry no more. You got the best of both worlds.

I tried to get the GREY!!!! but there wasn't one to be had in Michigan with the options I wanted!!! So I got stuck with black...

I agree. I own a dark grey Mazda Tribute and have found it to be easy to keep looking nice. Paint defects are very hard to detect on this vehicle, as opposed to my Jet Black M3 where everything shows.

I own a Mazdaspeed Miata in the Titanium Grey Mettallic you describe. I am pleased to hear that it should be "easy" to take care of, but I must admit to a bit of ignorance in this arena...

Frankly, I have very little idea what you're talking about. :o

I'm planning to bring my car to a show this weekend, and would like to make it shine the best I can. Any advice/explanation would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Brian

it seems like almost everyones black these days is whack. Acura's is absolutely horrible and why I repainted my car grey :D

Back to the original thread, at least for a minute……

Hey Yosemite,

I have a grey Mazda3 -- "Titanium Grey" the colour's called here in B.C.

I am ridiculously happy with the paint (not to mention how I feel about the car!).

In keeping with the “A picture’s worth a thousand words theory, here are some. They were taken a few weeks after I had my car detailed, when I first got the car. .

What, you mean our cryptic mess of TLA's (three-letter acronyms) is confusing? Don't feel alone; pretty much everyone that's new to the board takes a while to get up to speed on Autopia's particular brand of geek-speak. This page should help out: http://www.autopia.org/display.php?file=acronyms.htm

:welcome

Tort, currently with AIOx1, FMJx2 on my WRX :D

(translated: one application of Klasse All-In-One, and two layers of Menzerna Full Molecular Jacket sealant)

There was supposed to be a picture of my car with my last email. Sorry to disappoint you like that.

I'd like to direct special condolences to anybody irritated by my little blunder (or for any other reason, for that matter): I’m so sorry -- it must be a real bummer, being like that.

Anyway, here's another try.

Third, and last, pic. Thanks for bearing with me, folks.

Who could pass up the opportunity to post car pics where the thread is on your exact paint, colour and all? It was too much for me, anyway. :o

for the 6, the gray is a different one, steel gray metallic. It's a little darker than the titanium gray, but still has a lot of metal flakes :).

The color of the Tribute is dark like the 6. Both colors are fantastic. Kudos to Mazda for their paint selection and quality. Dirt does not even show up that much on this color.

Nice pics! The 3 is by far the best looking compact out there. Can't even begin to compare it with the Focuses and Civics.

Hey Yosemite!

You were sure right on the mark in your first post where you said:

There is so much metallic flake on this specific grey the car just sparkled when it was done. It also hid whatever swirling and marring it might have as well as my silver car.

The metallic flake on my 3 was (still is) sure something to see after claying, polishing with SEPC, then three coats of s100.

And what’s that about dirt showing on the car or not? You don’t let dirt get on your car, do you? I walk if it’s dirty outside.;)

I talked to a guy at Mazda about the paint on the 3’s. I don’t know whether or not what he said applies to the other Mazda models as well.

He said there are only four (I think it was four) basic colours in the Mazda’s paint arsenal, which get mixed in differing formulations to form the cars’ final colours. Maybe that's why my car’s colour/hue seems to shift depending on its surroundings – sometimes I see a little more blue, a little more red etc.

Unfortunately I haven’t taken any pics since laying on the s100. Once I do I’ll post a couple.

Hey jrrocc,

You’re most definitely right, as far as you go, when you say:

The 3 is by far the best looking compact out there.

I say “as far as you go, because I think the 3 isn’t just the best looking compact out there, but one of the better looking of today’s vehicles of any size, period. (I’m not counting “beyond normal cars, i.e., those with a price tag over $75K U.S.).

Of course, I could be a wee bit biased. You know how it is when you’re madly in love -- sometimes you just can’t see the other’s faults.:D

If I was looking for a compact it would be a 3. Better looks, better interior, more power and superior handling/fun to drive factor. The Civic is a great car but the Mazda 3 has raised the bar and is a notch above in every way. Hopefully Honda can keep up when their next gen Civic comes out.If not then there's no shame in being second best. :xyxthumbs
