how many years do you keep a car?

The 78MC was my grandmothers car she bought it brand new in 78. Passed onto my dad in the 92 I believe. Then passed onto me as my first car in 2002. I then got the 01MC as a new daily driver I wanted something newer to drive just before I graduated highschool. Then in 05 I got the 04 Cobra.

I plan on keeping the 78 forever! The 01 I plan on keeping for quite some time. And the Cobra might be up for sell in a few months...

I've had my car for eight years. I bought it brand new and don't actually plan on getting rid of it. I'm hoping to purchase a new car in about a year to use as a daily driver and leave my current car for the weekends.

I had my 95 Honda Civic for 12 years and it was still going strong. I will probably keep my 07 Lexus ES350 for 5, I am dying to get that LS460.

I've had the 1986 Cadillac Seville since November 1985 (new). Just love it.

2003 Cadillac STS (used) a little over 2 years.

1995 Honda Civic (new) for 13 years.:)

On average 10+ yrs. I've been fortunate to never have any major mechanical issues by doing this. About 3 yrs ago I bought a new truck just because the Explorer I had so many miles and was over 10 yrs old. Although I had no reason to distrust the realibility I felt a newer vehicle would be good for out of town trips. I also felt the Explorer would be more valuable to me as a DD than what I would get on a trade-in. I don't carry comp or collision on the vehicle so taxes and insurance are very resonable. 3 yrs later the new vehicle only has 16,000 miles. I added benefit is I don't care when my son has mud all over his cleats and climbs into my beater.

I gave my 1999 Honda Accord to my son...it is still in great shape. I tend to keep a car 8 to 10 years...I bought a 2007 G35 Infiniti and plan on keeping it as long as possible ( until my son starts bugging me for it:lol )

2 years, if I am lucky. I have gone through a few in less than a year, though. I've only lost my shirt once. I've made a profit on a few new cars, too.

My project car, which was purchased it in Feb 2007, is going up for sale in the spring. I hope to turn a a profit on that, too.

My 2000 Honda Accord last 8 years but traded it for a 2007 TL b/c of tranny problems. I plan on keep my TL 10 years (hopefully) so I can give it to my daughter when she begins driving.

I generally buy expecting to get at least 10 years out of a vehicle. I currently own 3 Toyotas. Two Camrys and a Sequoia. The Camrys are both 95s, the Sequoia is an 02. No plans to retire any of them any time soon.

I generally drive them till they die.

Ditto that! When the motor does go I will likely have it rebuilt. I have had the Mustang 6 years this month and it is about to hit 105K and the motor is as strong as ever. I regularly get comments that the car still looks like it is new.

I used to get the new car bug every few years, but I see myself keeping my WRX for a long time to come. I might *add* another Subaru to my garage, but I think the WRX is destined to stay with me well into 6-digit mileage.

I envy you guys that can keep cars for so long. My best is like 3 years. :( And I've had way too many cars for only being 27, well over 10. :(

Since this thread got bumped....we still have the Jag (well, of course), and the '00 and '01 Audis, all of which we plan to keep indefinitely. The '02 MPV might stick around a while longer too. There just aren't any replacements we'd like as well...seems weird with all the great cars being made these days, but that's how my wife and I feel about it :nixweiss

Everything else, well they're subject to my whims of the moment, and the Blazer is about to go to its new owner after about 20 months of ownership. I'm gonna miss the Blazer, but it's a boatload of problems just waiting to happen and I did promise it to the buyer (who's been very patient). Worked great as a beater though, and for teaching the youngest dog how to act around vehicles.

Looking over this thread, I *still* miss my old Volvo 240 wagon, but at least my niece-in-law is taking good care of it and she appreciates it almost as much as I did.

I'm 29 and have had 14 cars so I don't keep them very long... The '08 WRX I just picked up in November is my first car payment I paid cash for everything else... Took out a 5 year loan on it, but at this rate I should be able to pay it off in about 3 1/2 years... I like the car right now and say I won't get rid of it, but I can get bored with a car quick...

I'm 24 and have had 8 vehicles since I was driving at 16. I wish I could keep my cars longer, but I tend to a. get bored with them and b. find something cooler/better. When I buy my Bimmer, I pledged to myself and my wife to keep it "forever". My wife isn't much better, her longest run was 3 years and she's had 5 vehicles.

In today's world of high pitch marketing, most of you youngsters are following the big auto makers plan to keep everyone in new cars. I don't think any of today's car makers want us in a car over a few years, that way those plants keep churning them out. Its not cool anymore do have you car paid off, but it is cool to have the latest and greatest most horsepower gas guzzler parked out front for all the world to see, its our status symbol, our, ok I fit in, I drive a hummer badge of honor. Don't worry, I only talk crazy, I follow the play book too. I have a whole yard of fresh cars in every color, red 05 scion tc, black 06 Nissan frontier crew cab, silver 07 vw jetta and our weekend toy of course. And for those of you with Exxon mobile stock I support you guys too.

1986 Cadillac Seville purchased in Novmember 1985. Going strong 23 years later.
