Horrid Paint scratches-what to do??

Driving into a tree/building/car/etc... yes, I can understand, but scratching your car and needing it repainted (or alternatively buffing through the clearcoat and needing a repaint)..........hmmmm; I may check with my insurance agent to see because now I'm curious

There is no difference. As long as it's not related to lack of maintenance, blatant/intensional destruction or normal wear & tear; it's covered. i.e. by ACCIDENT. Let me know what your Agent says.

If your paint is dead and you key it on purpose.........Not Covered

If your car gets keyed by someone............Covered

If you spray paint your fence and your car's paint gets destroyed.......Covered

If you accidentally drive your car into a lake..........Covered

If you run you accidentally run your dirtbike into your car.....Covered

If you & your friends make a ramp to land you dirtbikes on your car...Not Covered

Well, for one, I know for a fact David is correct because of what he does for a living. LOL And two, I knew someone that spilled something on their carpet and could not get the stain out and insurance paid for all new carpeting.

I'm not really certain how self-inflicted damage to your auto covers under an insurance policy?

You are using the term "self-inflicted" incorrectly. Self-inflicted damages are imposed deliberately.

Whether insurance covers the scratches is based on intent.

Scratches created on the deck lid of a vehicle while using an ice scraper to remove snow are not self-inflicted. The person did not intend to create those scratches while removing the snow. It was unintentional.

I would check that; this is what my agent wrote (which makes sense to me)

Q:..............if you're polishing your automobile's paint (clearcoat) and burn through the clearcoat accidentally and it needs to be repainted, is that covered .............

A.....The 'loss' would not be covered by insurance. The SPF 1(standard policy form) wording states "The Insurer agrees to indemnify the Insured against direct and accidental loss of or damage to the auto"; it is not considered an accidental loss when the Insured is working on the vehicle.....

Using the answer i got above, I can see the coffee example, but not if you burn your clearcoat.

Oh, wait, I just re-read our conversation; maybe he meant repaint in terms of the ice scrapper damage, not my reference to burning your clear.

No need to check. Agents write policies, they don't adjust/appraise claims. :lol

I was involved in the appraisal of a 2001 C5 Vette over the summer where the owner used a car care product that destroyed their paint. We ended up paying out over $12K for a complete refinish. It went to claim legal and got ok'd.

I want to buy that policy for myself then :think2

Maybe it's just different policy wordings - I used to be an actuary, and studied towards my CIP years ago (canadian designation; chartered insurance prof.) so I know a few things, although it has been some time :nervous:

Okay, so I talked with an adjuster and we came to the conclusion that I guess you are correct - technically there are no exclusions for stupidity, even broadly worded exclusions, in the policy, so it would be covered under comprehensive.

You'll have to argue with them for sure, but there's nothing explicitly written into the policy exclusions to cover anything like accidently over-buffing paint and striking through the clear, forcing a repaint.

I'll be damned, I was not expecting that.

it's a 2000 black BMW, she scratched the paint with an ice scraper....i don't "do paint" but can a buffer take care of this or is that down to the metal?

Sooooooo I did the car this weekend. I found out what happened, she used a metal snow shovel to remove the ice from her car....I'll let that settle in for a second.....Now, just think to yourself, if that's how she treated the outside, what do you think the inside was like???

It took me 8 solid hours to do the whole car. 3 of which just on the interior. Unfortunately I didn't have any sunlight left to take after shots, but she texted me the next day and expressed how happy she was with the outcome. :2thumbs: She thought it looked brand new when I was done, and gave me a healthy tip on top of the $$ I charged plus introduced me to all of her neighbors who asked for quotes too.

This is the only shot I could obtain:

One thing I couldn't get over was how the painted pieces of the interior were literally flaking apart...there was a lot of damage to the seats and carpeting, particularly on the driver's side
