hologram/swirl reappearing

ok, i have posted a few times about my uses with my new rotary, a hitachi. well yesterday i thought i had finally figured out a combo of pads and polish that worked. i was using a blue lc pad and CG pro polish. i have 2 1200 watt halogens i was using in doors yesterday. after 50/50 wipe, it seemed i had gotten all the scratches and swirls out. i wiped the panels down and checked then in sun light. i saw nothing, i mean no marks, holograms, except for very deep scratches i would have to color sand out. well this morning i walk out and check my car and there are swirls, scratches and holograms!! i mean i spent hours yesterday working these out, and by all my accounts they were gone. i even showed my wife and she gave me the thumbs up. i dont understand why after one night they would return or be visible when yesterday the panels were almost perfect, even in sunlight??



i'm about to give up on the rotary, even though it produces a sharper, much more reflective shine than my previous experiences with the flex or pc. i really want to master the rotary but what am i doing wrong?? :sadpace:

ok i'm asking because i dont like 3m products, do i have to finish with 3m ultrafina?? i mean is there nothing else that it could be?
 
It looks like you didnt remove all the oils even after a IPA wipe down. Only answer I can think of. Try using Prep Sol next time.

I know of nothing else that finishes down as consistantly hologram free as Ultrafina. Not a huge 3M fan otherwise, but UF flat rocks. Everyone else in the industry is now playing catch-up, IMO.



Two things to remember:



1. It won't remove severe holograms

2. Follow the directions exactly

can you give me a little low down on the directions? i've seen that posted somewhere else and it scares me a little. kinda like if i dont follow then my car will melt

Even on the very softest paints, UF finishes down hologram free with a no-bite pad. 1Z High Gloss polish makes black Bentley paint look like you just wet sanded it, yet UF finishes it off flawlessly. I totally agree with Scott: everyone else *is* playing catch-up.

It scares you to follow directions
 
Keep in mind that UF is an incredible finisher, but unless the polishing steps prior to it don't bring the finish to an almost perfect appearance, it could hide defects. I like to use UF just to insure that the finish is 100% swirl free. In other words, don't go right to UF right after a moderate to heavy defect removal stage.

Bingo... UF fills much like Menz 106ff.. Do not be suprised to see marring returning several months after polishing :(



The only way to ensure (and there is really no way to ensure) there is ZERO holograms/pad abrasion is to never skip a step and use logic... Finish with two polishing steps, one with a light abrasive pad and one with zero abrasive quality (mechanical action).



I would say that every polish fills to some degree and that if you are looking for the best possible results you might not want to copy what you see in the click and brags but follow the advice of the top pros (like Mr. Fermani).

Huh, never heard that before. Does a PrepSol wipe (after UF) show the paint's true condition?

Correct. The only time I have had holograms come back with UF is when I went from a heavy compound straight to UF on softer paints. You have to be sure the holograms left after compounding and polishing are minimal.



On harder paint like my Maxima, I can go straight from DACP to UF since DACP leaves minimal hologramming on the paint...and believe me, with the minimal care my paint has received since I use the rotary on the hood in March, anything I missed would be rearing its ugly head by now! On Honda paint, I would have to use #80 or Optimum Polish with a finishing pad prior to using UF to remove the heavier swirls DACP will leave behind on softer paints.

no smarty pants. i would like to have as much info as possible to be as prepared as possible. sometimes people can give you insight to a product or step that might make life easier.



i have done so many things while reading directions that come take forever, but had some one told me "do this" it would have been easier. just a being safe is all.

Well, it's been thrown out here that weeks and even months later that swirl marks will return after getting polished out and surfaced prepped with Prep-Sol.....



I'm wondering why.....



Since I challenge everything for personal satisfaction, I wonder what wipe downs are not removing.......Is it possible that new swirls marks have been induced later on after several washes.....?

This is one product that works best as directed on the bottle. Spread at 1000 rpm, bump up to 1800 rpms and use enough pressure to compress the pad for a couple slow passes, then back to 1000 rpms easing up on the pressure to finish out.
