Help deciding on a replacement polish

I would strongly recommend against getting the Optimum products.

I know that others have had excellent results with them, but in my own personal experience, they take a very long time to break down, and the additional time required eliminates any price savings in the initial purchase.

I would recommend getting 3M UltraFina and Meguiar's #105. With just those two and the right pads, you can tackle any job in *half* the time of Optimum, due to their fast working times.

Totally agree. I have gotten good results with Optimum Polish, but not on hard clears.

There's a steep learning curve to M105, but it is definitely worth taking the time to learn it. Tim hits it right on the head: with those two products, you can do just about any job out there. Just don't get frustrated and give up on the M105.

I agree, but still like SIP and 106ff.

Same here, but he's wanting to save some money. He could almost get a quart of UF and M105 for the price of one liter of 106.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm going to post a separate thread asking about 106 and wolfgangs. That would be ideal for me if they were truly the same and the savings there could be enough to justify SIP...

It's 106 and Blackfire (not wolfgangs) that are the same. Supposedly, Blackfire takes the Menz ceramiclear polishes and adds "more lubricating oils" to it. I've used the Blackfire Scratch Ressistant Compound (supposed to be SIP) before, and it doesn't cut as well as the real SIP does. It feels very watered down. I haven't used their 106 equivalent, though, so I can't comment on that one. Given the choice between SIP and Blackfire, I'd take the SIP every time, even if it's more money.

I thought later on the community discovered that there was another Menz polish which was like 106FF but had more oils in it, and we figured that the BF SRC Polish was that one, instead? Or am I getting mixed up with another Menz line?

No, there's the 106FA which does have more oils in it (and we don't get it here), which in turn is a Blackfire product. I don't recall which one.

Yeah, that was a long discussion. I was on the "it's SIP/106 with more oils added" to it side of the discussion. I was using the then-current web page as a reference, but since then, they've changed the page. The wording is different now. Either way, they do say that their poliishes are made by Menzerna "for scratch resistant clears". That statment right there kinda narrows the field alot, as Menz doesn't have *that* many scratch resistant polishes in their line up.

They could only be variations of:

PO85RD3.02 (83q here in the US)

PO106FF

PO106FA

PO85RD

One wouldn't help but wonder if it's scratch resistant why are there abrasive polishes for it? ;) :buffing:

You guys are really keeping me chuckling today, when I should really be out working on my car! :D

I use Optimum stuff OP/OC/OHC. I will not use it with a PC again. Takes forever and didn't finish as well as a polish should. WIth a rotary they work ok, but leave a greasy mess behind. I can get OP to finish really nice with white foam by rotary. I will probably get other stuff next time, though.
