HD Challenge (@ SEMA?)

I'm not going to recommend anything to be painted, but there is certain information I think would be helpful for contestants on choosing products. Just so whoever ends up being chosen isn't going blind folded while those who work there already have all questions answered.

1. Manufacture of paint and clearcoat

2. Exact numbering code for any hardeners/catalyst/reducers used

3. OEM code for the paint or exact tinting guide used if it's a custom

4. Metallic/Iridescent content used in the paint if any

5. When the panel was painted

6. Exact flash times used if different from manufacture

7. Was the paint baked and how long and a what temp.

8. Was the panel always kept in a controlled environment or placed outside and subject to everyday weathering and temp. changes

9. Grits and Manufacture of wet sanding paper used before finishing with 3000

Most of those questions will go straight over peoples heads, but helps someone like me that really takes every variable into account when applying the scientific method. If some info is unavailable, it's by no means a huge deal. Another thing I was thinking was if this is limited to polishes or extends into glazing? Also, the use of fillers in products can easily hide imperfections. I suggest some method of their removal before judging if not allowed. If they are allowed, no problem, game on! Lastly, the only product I think should be a constant between contestants is the microfiber towels used. I'm not biased to brand's, which can be an in house name or some sponsors, but I think it should be known which towels will be used beforehand. This is just because we're testing compounds/polishes/pads and not towels, which are used constantly in the experiment and differ greatly between manufactures in polymer/polyester/polyamide compositions. Ok, i'm done for now!

David put me down! I'm sure I can find an equal.

I have done a fair amount of product testing for these forums, I'm also a science teacher so proper testing is a must. I'm known by many of the communities for my candor and opinions. You don't want an unknown person or that will be dismissed by the seasoned pro, thus you're back to square one.

Cheers,

GREG

SHOOTOUT!

How cool. I saw the "all expenses paid" deal for three guys.

Perhaps that could apply to three guys coming from WAY out of the area? This way, more local guys could attend and join in.

Personally, I would like to see a shootout INCLUDING guys from other companies.

Not necessarily at any one manufactures facility... Just thinking out loud.

But 3D thought of it. I applaud the challenge, nonetheless. Kudos.

Can you better clarify the statement, "You may not be affiliated with the products you are putting against HD UNO"?

Are there other stipulations?

Rotary or random orbital okay?

Magic Elixers or Super Stealth pads allowed? Customized machines?

And on video, too!:2thumbs:

How fun and exciting this could be! :woot:

If I can put someone's name in I would love to:

Most of us have seen his work and admire it a lot. Most of learned from him and we are always asking him for help. I'm not sure if its something he would be intrested in doing but I think he desreves a shot. From what I've seen he is very open to most things out there and well I only hope that he wants to embark on this challenge:

I ask that Scottwax (if he want to) is put in the pot for names to go.

Scott sorry in advance if I oversteped my bounds I'm just a huge fan of your work and becuse of your inputs (and many others) to this site I've got my cars looking their best, and have hand many people come to me to work on their paint.

Kevin,

I brought your comment/request to Tunch's attention and he agreed. Why not make it an open event?

The worst that can come out of it is that we all learn something from one another. The best that will come out of it is that we all learn something from one another.

Tunch is flying back from Miami today. He will chime in on Monday.

It's getting cold here in MN....depending on the date of the event put me down as a contender. ;)

I still haven't had a chance to play around with the sample of UNO I ordered...guess I better get on that! :D

I feel I'd be a good contender as I have extensive detailing experience and have used many different products throughout the years.

EX-SWELL-ENT !!

The makings of an enjoyable and informative event! :buffing: And the most popular thread in autopia's history is officially inked!

This sounds it will be a great event! I might fly down just to watch, its been a few years since I have gone back home to socal anyways.

I dunno about that... the Beer thread is pretty darn popular. :grinno:

Hmmm- I can't seem to finf the beer thread, but I saw that the Car Washing Horror Stories thread has over 81,000 views. Yeah, that's gonna be tough to beat.

IMHO - I think it would be pretty intersting if you had the elite paint correction guys like Kevin Brown, Ryan Blanchette, RickRack, Todd Helme, Bryan Burnworth(to name just a few) take part in the shootout. These guys not only know how to squeeze every last bit of gloss out of perfected paint, but they've done some pretty impressive product reviews in the past. They'd be able to lend the most credibility for the comparison.

Well, here's my input...

I think I should be in the challenge because, even thou I have not used HD Uno, I think there's no product in this world that can take out swirls(even deep ones) and leave an LSP ready surface in one shot, seen it close, but never where it should be. I'm a firm believer that a 2-step min. is the only way to achieve those results(at least 3 in hard-as-rock Audi paint)

Plus, never been to Cali, and not loking for warm weather, since in PR we are scorching our a$$es off right now

I know I won't be picked because you want someone with a big name but when I hear BLACK! I don't think there is a person on the earth with more experience than I. This is the collection I worked on solely for two years. Believe me when I say those canned lights show swirls!

And you can't forget these three Concours De Elegance "Best of Show" winners!

I think most of the top pros. can create a perfect finish with no limitations on # of steps and polishes. I would like to see how UNO stacks up too it. This is a great idea David!! If that polish does what you say it does you better package that polish in something other than those silly little bottles you sell that stuff in.

Seriously- whaddya MEAN you aren't a BIG name with responsibility for a collection like THAT ?! :wow: Gonna have to read some of your back posts- hopefully there are some nice write-ups!

EARTH is a BIG place with a LOT of black cars. No reason you should NOT be included. As for the AMOUNT of black cars done... I try to FORGET about the ones I have done. :nervous2:

Is this going to be a test of paint-polishing GUYS or paint-polishing PRODUCTS? Does the guy make the product? Or the product make the guy?

And therein lies the difficulty of a SHOOTOUT like this.
