Greetings from the Central Coast of CA...

nOOb here!

I stumbled in while seeking out information on the fine art of detailing. I live on the Central Coast of California and have always been pretty diligent about maintaining several vehicles, boats, and motorcycles I own. Over the last couple years, I have spent a great deal of time wrenching and maintaining a few offshore boats (my own and a couple friend's) as a necessity/favor/hobby.

Thanks in great part to the economic dive over the last few years, about a year and a half ago, I laid off my work crews and walked away from my own unrelated business of 24 years and stepped into sort of an unpaid semi-retirement. I'm in the process now of exerting a great deal of thought into stepping into the trade of detailing, not on automobiles, but on boats. It would seem to be somewhat of an untapped market in my area. Maybe for good reason, so I'm slowly and carefully researching that aspect! :inspector:

Anyway, I'm looking forward to sponging as much info as possible from those here with much greater experience in the trade and giving back where I am able.

Shiny side up!

Welcome aboard, mate ! :)

Are you anywhere near Cambria ? I have family there.
Central California is another beautiful coastline that is not like more north or south. My Aunt who lived in Cambria for the last 25+ years of her life, always wore a sweater because according to her, it was always 64 degrees there. :)

So you want to Detail boats, do you?
I have a great friend who is one of the best Boat Detailers in the Seattle and surrounding areas. His girlfriend wrote a book on Boat Detailing years ago, and she is also a very good boat detailer as well.

You will need a couple of Rotary machines, Dewalt or Makita to start, to get the gelcoat back to normal. Gelcoat is a whole other unique animal compared to automotive paintwork. Sometimes it will gloss up great and others, it wont gloss up at all.
You might want to find a good boat detailing forum as well as this one to talk to.

Let me know if you want to talk to one of this area's best boat detailers and I can give you his information.

Good luck with your future plan/s !

Thanks, DanF!

Yes, I'm 45-50 minutes south of Cambria just off Highway 1. I'm right on the backside of the Pismo/Oceano Dunes.

I've done a fair amount of work with gelcoat in the past but not enough to consider myself schooled. I just completed the color sanding and polishing of a beautiful black over white 26' Sea Fox center console that was only 4 years old. She was scratched up pretty bad from the lift hoist process down here in Port San Luis. She looks like brand new again after 2 full days of correction.

I may take you up on your contact offer in the near future as things unfold. Thanks again!
