Just an old dog tryin to learn some new things. Great forum... best I've seen, so I thought I'd become a member. Check this.... Moved to Alaska from sunny California about 5 years ago. The winters are way harsh for vehicles here. I've got a 04 Silver Metallic Chevy Truck. I have religiously kept it clean (drive through car wash in winter because of sub zero temps) every week and hand washed in the summer.
I have not yet clayed, polished, or waxed the truck yet. Please don't crucify me for not paying better attention to the truck's finish. There is a great deal of tar, road grime, and general "sandpaper like feel" to the trucks paint. The truck has always been garaged in the winter but I still have these issues that I need to address now. The truck looks "nice from far," but is "far from nice." All opinions and advise are welcome and greatly appreciated. :help:

Welcome to the group...:howdy no one is going to crucify you here. These are a great bunch of people who have a lot of experience to share.

That sandpaper like feel can be cured by giving the car a good claying before you go to polish it...when your done it should be smooth like glass...

Welcome to the city, sir!! An old dog can defintiely learn new tricks here.

I spent over thirty years in Alaska before mving to Texas. There are obsticles in keeping a car fresh in your enviroment but it can be attained. The thing that I found the best was a warm garage. LOL!

The use of a car wash makes me think you are in the Anchorage area but I may be wrong. I like the interior area of Fairbanks. They had terrible winters but the summers albeit short were glorious.

Welcome to the family!:welcome::dcrules Like Stephan said it sounds like you need a good clay before you polish. If I wetre you I'd start off with a nice starter kit to get you going. Places such as Detailcity.com, Autogeek.net, and Poorboysworld.com have some nice products.:rockon

Welcome to the forum! I can imagine that the environment you live in is harsh on the truck. As Stephan said, a good clay bar process followed by polishing should help.

Welcome to the site from Sonoma County CA

If you can get some pics of the truck and the sandpaper like feeling you are talking about it will be easier to make starting suggestions about what to do.

Again Welcome!

Boy, that sounds like some girls I've taken home at closing time, LOL....Welcome to DC! An aggressive clay (automagic red perhaps) and some medium polish may do the trick for you. Do you have a rotary or pc?
