Flex Thermal Shutdown?

Hey guys,

Was working on a Mercedes in the garage last night. It was over 100 degrees outside and more than that in the garage. I am using a FLEX 3401 and had finished the top of the car and turned the FLEX off to get more polish. When I went to switch it back on....nothing!! Let it sit for a minute and it came back on. This happened a couple times and then I hopped on here and talked to Holden.

I looked up a few posts about thermal shutdown and there was nothing concrete about it. Only that it's a possibility....kinda like the LochNess Monster.....LOL!!

So I go back out....fired it up and make a concerted effort NOT to apply any pressure to the FLEX at all while polishing. Just holding in place and letting the pad do the work. This seemed to make a huge difference! It didn't shut down anymore that night at all.

So.....has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions on how to keep it from happening again? (other than not applying pressure) I found something about people changing out the brushes on other machines with good success.....is that an option on the 3401?

Thanks in advance!!

Same thing happened to me just this past weekend. I've had my Flex 3401 for quite some time and have used it for many, many hours. This past weekend was the first time I've had that happen.

Some odd things about my experience though...

The shutdown happened during the first 3 minutes of use. So I stopped for a couple minutes, unplugged it, looked at everything to make sure the backing plate wasn't rubbing or anything like that. Everything looked fine so I plugged it back in and continued to polish the entire car and it never happend again?? It was kinda odd...but I have read posts we're similar things have happened.

It was certainly hot and humid out this past weekend, but I'm quite sure I've used my 3401 in similar conditions before.

I don't really know...???

Hi Guy's, I have just placed an order for a Flex XC3401 VRG from Detailing Image, prior to this I read quite alot about it but Im not a professor. Somewere in amongst all the bumph it states that the machine as a cut off switch for when brushes become worn past a set level to protect the motor, If both your machines have had plenty of use this may be worth checking out. Many thanks Terry

Thanks for the heads up tezzy!! I haven't even had the thing a whole year yet....so that better not be the problem!! LOL!! I will call Flex and see what they say. The upside is that I bought it from an Autopia member and got a good price....the bad side is that I don't have any kind of warranty....:(
