Fixing a NYC paint job

Okay, anyone who has ever gon to NYC has seen this on a towncar. You know, the nasty super orange peel paint. Lucky me, my BMW has the metal sunroof and trunklid painted this way. I currently have the means to have a BMW approved shop repaint it. The colour is a few shades off, but that is beside the point. What car I do to fix this? I was thinking rubbing compound followed by polish with a P/C 7336. The main problem is that the orange peel is so much it makes for low gloss, not a detailers dream. I suppose wet sanding might be a possiblility, but I haven't a clue of the paint thinkness ( I don't have a thicknesss meter). the other problem is medium to heavy oxidation of the rest of the car, which I believe can be polished out, along with the mass of swirls. Opinions please. Also note: I have only a small amount of detailing experience.

I'm confused. Is the paint on your sunroof and trunklid has bad orange peel, is this the original paint or a repaint, because you are saying the color is off? The color being off can't be fixed, the orange peel can be wetsanded out as recommended above, but I would only do this if you are working on a repaint (because there is a lot of clearcoat) or if you are going to get a free repaint on it anyway (this part I didn't understand). Also, do you have a PC, pads, polishes? The oxidation/swirls can be removed, but I'm trying to get a clearer understanding of the problem area. Also, if you are in NYC you may want to post this in the Metro-Area forum and see if someone can help you out.

1. No these areas of extreme OP were repainted at some point, but not because an accident.

2. I WILL have to pay to have it repainted, however I want it to look as best as it car for now.

3. I realize only a repaint will fix the colour being off.

4. I have a P/C 7336 with pads & polishes

5. I do not live in NYC ( ilve about 3 hrs. away) however I believe that my car resided in NYC at one point.

6. I am leary of wet-sanding because I can't afford a repaint right now so, is there a link to directions on how to repaint?
