Finally used my sample of the new Optimum Coating

Sounds like a good product for a guy who doesn't want to wax his car. Will it bond permanently like paint or does it need to be removed to be repainted? I think there are similar products currently on the market and they have a somewhat limited market appeal. If it really can fill micromarring permanently it might be a great product. I think there is a product with similar claims selling on Ebay for around $30.

The product sounds very interesting , but what the point of it ??

The point is it offers long term protection for people unlike those of us on this board who see no enjoyment in waxing or sealing their cars. This would be a relief to them.

Where I live in bad road salt ect... It eats through steel and clear coat for gods sake. I highly doubt it will be more durable than that. Also to have a product so fragile to work with that you have to sign a wavier .

I think this would be a product great for such a situation. The conditions you mention can eat through a sealant or wax in a month. The product should last much, much longer so you won't have to be resealing or waxing your car in the middle of the winter when it is freezing outside.

Wonder who they are trying to market it to ?

Detailers who have numerous customers who are willing to pay a little more for a product which means they can easily go a full year or two without needing anything more than a wash.

You can still wax over it for a "nuba" look if you like. It bonds permanently but can be removed by polishing (just like paint). Similar products in Japan, but none worthy of mention in the states to my knowledge. It does NOT fill ANY marring and I don't know anyone who claimed that. You have to prep the paint to perfection prior to application or you will have marring that you can't get to. Nothing on ebay is on par with this.

It did make a couple bird bomb etchings on my hood less noticable and the spider swirls were somewhat reduced so the coating does appear to have at least minor filling capacity. Doesn't do anything for scratches though. I would definitely agree that properly polishing the paint will give you the best results. I just didn't feel like putting 5-6 hours into my own paint. :chuckle:

Here are my questions/concerns?

How hard is the new surface? Is it 'harder' then paint, in the sense, what if it gets marred up? Is it easy to correct? Obviousy polishing it removes thickness (or removes it completely?

This is really my biggest worry, I would say that I have to touch up most of my clients cars every 6-12 months to get keep them perfect. If I put down this coating and it marrs, then the durability benefit is quickly erased.

I don't really think this coating is meant for customers like yours. I haven't had it long enough anyway to know what level of resistance it has to marring and swirling.

I think it can work. At least you still get 6 months of real protection out of it. It WILL polish off. Price is not an issue.

How can it bond to paint but not fill scratches:nixweiss

Z5 doesn't fill but it bonds. :nixweiss

If Yvan's measurements are correct and Opti-Coating (or whatever the name is going to be) laid down a 2 micron barrier, that is hardly enough to fill most scratches. It was enough to minimize the appearance of light spider swirls on my car but it didn't eliminate them.

From what I've read on the Optimum board, you'll get much more than 6 months of protection from the coating. They have a number of test vehicles at 3 years still showing full protection.

Hey, to be fair, that's coming from a representative from the company. I personally don't get 5 months from my OCW, either. Not saying that this new product isn't the best sealant ever, just saying that we should consider the source when evaluating the claim.

True, but there's a big difference between 6 months and 3 years. If this coating was coming from some no-name company, I'd be very skeptical. But because it's Optimum and I know that Dr. G is a reputable guy, I tend to believe more of what they say.

I love optimum as well, but like the above post states, I dont get 5 months out of OCW. I get closer to one month. Maybe some people do get 5 months, I am not disputing their claims. It's still a great company with great products. I have yet to get a bad product from them.

I meant if you have clients that get 2 major details a year, it is still worth it.

I mean what else lasts 6 months? (FK1 #1000 for sure)
