FedEx ground and UPS deliveries

There seems to be a debate of FedEx ground vs. UPS
I have been doing trafficking (warehouse and shipping manager, so no one gets the wrong idea :naughty ) for over 20 years and I wish to offer some facts

The difference between UPS and FedEx ground is UPS drivers work for UPS, FedEx ground drivers own their routes. That is why a UPS driver takes both air and ground while there are 2 different drivers for FedEx 1 for Express packages and 1 for ground.

Oh, and the rates are EXACTLY the same. It depends on what type of discount each shipper can work out with the carrier.

Hopefully this will clear somethings up

Happy Holidays

Is that why I see a lot of FedEx trucks in peoples driveways? Because they own them themselves?
I have always had good luck with FedEx, UPS, and DHL/AirBorne.

Actually Jay there are some differences in shipping times usaully due to where hubs are located, especially to the midwest and the west from the east.
I used to use UPS but being they work for the company they have less personal liability for the packages, whereas FedEX drivers either own or work for the owner of the route and if a package is lost they (the driver) pay for it, not the company. Shipping to CA from NY is 4 business days FedEx and usually 6 for UPS ...to Texas I can usually save a day with FedEx and to AZ too, right Norah:D I feel I have gotten more personal service from FedEx this past year than I did with UPS the previous 2 years. I have yet to use DHL.
As for the rates, they are all high and about the same no matter which one you use, but for International, (except Canada) I find FedEX processes my shipments extremely fast, it may also have to do with their main hub being 7 miles away in Mahwah;)

I'm with Poorboy. There are definite and distinct differences between UPS & FEDEX in terms of shipping time efficiency, customer service, and rates. I think the farther the package needs to travel the more obvious some of the differences are.

Steve,
I will admit that I have been spoiled by the fact that I do 99.9% B2B and that shipments to a residence is different.
I guess I also picked a poor example by showing a "normal" traffic lane, I know that there are some areas that will definately add a day or 2 to transit times.

I have actually had it where I was able to get something to Singapore faster than I was able to get it Sanger,TX

The point that I was trying to make it that neither is standing head and shoulders above the other, both are are handling 10's of thousands of packages a day and getting them to where they are supposed to be in tact for essentially the same cost and basically in the same time frame (being to so close to NYC I will not notice a difference) the further away a person is from a metropolis will effect delivery times, also going to a residence vs. a business address (where the business is near other industry)will effect time as well. FedEx also has a home delivery which is different than than the normal ground were as UPS has a truck that handles businesses and home delivery on the same truck

A key difference is that FexEx ground will not deliver to a PO Box were UPS will. Must be that liability issue.

Funny i can get a package to London faster than Minnesota

I like the Saturday delivery by FedEx for the OC detailer who needs his weekend fix:lol:

I also like the ability of home delivery to schedule a time for delivery if you are not going to be home...not too many people know of this option even though it does cost a couple extra bucks it's worth it if you have packages that disappear or work strange hours :punk:

I am kind of fed up with fed ex right now. My poorboys stuff was scheduled for delivery on the 23rd, I check the status and i guess they couldnt make it that day due to christmas so it changed to scheduled for the next buisness day, which of course is the 27th. I get home today with nothing on the porch and the package tracking shows it didnt even leave the wharehouse. It says again scheduled for the next buisness day. Good thing it was for me and not a christmas present.

This just goes to show that ALL of the major carriers do this and none are perfect or heads and shoulders above the others.

We cannot say that UPS is better or FedEx is better because it really comes down to the service and the quality of the employees on the local level and that variable is going to be different from city to city.

i liked :boot UPS until my last two parcels were  delayed and the fact the my deliveries are very late into the evening. not to mention Steve has spoiled me with FedEx. unless FedEx screws up i would rather use there serv.

Did you call FEDEX? Customer service I feel is the biggest distinguisher between the two carriers. If you have a problem FEDEX will do something about it if you let them know you're unhappy. UPS on the other hand would just saw "oh well."

I've had deliveries go wrong with both carriers. Hey, nobody's perfect right? FEDEX was the only carrier out of the two that actually tried to fix the problem when I called though.

Maybe UPS caught on to the fact that you were being impatient and cheap? :rofl

I don't think that it's fair to generalize and say that UPS as a whole, meaning every UPS employee, would say "oh well". I am sure that having an "oh well" attitude is not company policy. If it was, they wouldn't be where they are today. I am sure that with a company that enormous that you will have employees that excel at customer service and some that are underachievers. I bet FedEx has that as well with their numerous employees.

So you had your experiences and you like what you like. Good for you. I'm done ridin' you about this. If you couldn't tell by now, I have not been pleased with FedEx and I wonder how in the world anyone could like them and not like UPS. I guess that's why both UPS and FedEx will not be going out of business anytime soon.

I prefer FedEx 10:1 to UPS. The amjority of shippments I get from UPS are damaged. maybe not the contents so much but the boxes arrive in terrible condition. Over the last several years, I have noticed far fewer UPS labels, and more FedEx. That is now shifting again, from FedEx to DHL....
As for pricing, my experience indicates much more affordable prices on the west coast, be it shipping or receiving, with FedEx vs UPS. Not to mentions as said before, better customer service with FedEx, although the Kinkos transition didnt/hasnt helped FedEx for me.......

I can't imagine how you could be a supporter of UPS. So, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

I have to say though that saying "oh well" might not be company policy I've heard it several times from UPS employees. In fact, it's happened to me every time UPS has made a shipping error involving one of my packages which is more than one time. On the flip side every single FEDEX employee I've ever dealt with has been polite, friendly, and helpful.

Here's a new reason I HATE UPS. After waiting 10 days for my order from PAC (partially due to out of stock and holidays, but mostly due to slow UPS transit times) my order made it to Shrewsbury, MA this morning which is a 30 minute or so drive from my house. I just tracked it again to see if it had been transferred to the location most of my deliveries are sent from and saw this message:

THE PACKAGE WAS DAMAGED IN TRANSIT. UPS WILL NOTIFY THE SENDER WITH THE DETAILS;DAMAGED MERCHANDISE DISCARDED, BALANCE BEING RETURNED. UPS WILL NOTIFY THE SENDER WITH THE DETAILS

I guess UPS heard me talking smack about them. :(

Did you hear about the FedEx-UPS merger?

The new company's gonna be called FedUp! :D

Sorry.... I've really waited a long time to bust out with that one. It's a groaner, I know, but I had to.

Take my wife . . . please!!

We should get a guy who plays the drums to do rim shots after our jokes and then the three of us could go on tour.

FedEx Ground was RPS(road package system). I used work them back in early '90's. By 1998 or maybe early '99, FedEx merge/bought RPS. Actually RPS was a sister carrier of Roadway frieght (Im sure u seen seen this before). Oh well alittle history for ya.
