Detailing Forums - I'm cranky today...

Just realized another pet peeve (seen most at MOL).

16 year old "pro" that has been "detailing" for "10 years", "details" his personal DD (for the 10th time) and posts pics of the "full correction" and never provides a full sun shot.

Later in the same thread, someone asks... "hey, no sun shots", to which he responds... "oh maybe later, didn't get a chance today". One week later and still no sun shots.

Maybe we'll just forget.

Now, this scenario (which is an actual event) brings up many questions, however the most pressing (to me) is, why was this 6 year old detailer not on Jay Leno 10 years ago?

Surely Jay would've loved to have a 6 year old with a rotary on his show? Heck, he would be to Leno, what Tiger Woods was to Johnny Carson!;)

Here's my take on the boards:

TID - small, friendly, Todd's tutorials make up for any issues.

Autopia - lots of info, fantastic archives, fun debates.

DB - "The more it costs, the better it is." The entertainment value is off the charts.

DW - interesting cultural perspective.

AG (forum) - utterly pointless aside from a sales tool.

I agree with U N with his comments on AG and I dropped MOL long ago when I asked a simple question and got jumped on because I dared suggest there was something other than Megs polishes out there. Autopia - well, there are a couple of "experts" over there that I dissagree with, and several parrots that make me laugh, but, it's interesting sometimes.

Your thoughts pretty much mirror my own.

I like this forum a lot, the only vendor based forum I frequent, because we can freely discuss products not sold by PAC and not get bashed for it. Mods, admins, PLEASE keep it this way. :D

While I do post on DB, I sorta chuckle when I read threads about super duper high end waxes and whatnot. Uhmm, hello, excellent results can be had using much cheaper products provided you know how to use them.

I really have no beefs at all with Autopia TBH.

AGO is a joke, I hate when I have to order from AG because I just feel like I'm shopping in the Wal Mart of the detailing product world.

I don't visit DW a lot, those zillion picture write ups can get tiresome.

Just my $0.02

I enjoy reading and learning a little something from each of the various detailing forums......

The speed here at TID is fine for me....(Macbook)

As far as some weird posters, you'll get that at larger sites......That's just part of the deal.

What's been strange for me lately, looking for new products and tips and how they work doesn't seem as important as it was when I first got into this.....

Does that sound familiar with anyone here......?

User Name...I think you would probably rank any forum as "your favorite" that doesn't give you the boot.

I am glad you post over here...every now and then you post something useful, or something that makes me LOL and spit my Diet Pepsi onto my laptop.

As to the speed, in which manner is the speed an issue? Page loads, post updates, etc?

I also have a problem with speed. TID is the slowest of the detailing forums that I visit. If I post a comment, e.g., there is usually a LONG pause after I hit the "Submit" button. I do not notice this problem on other forums.

This happens to be very true, many thanks for reminding me.

Nonsense!

or something that makes me LOL and spit my Diet Pepsi onto my laptop.

Just don't send me a bill for the repair!

I visit regularly TID, MOL, Autopia, DB, and DW. I enjoy all of them. MOL remains my sentimental favorite. It's almost family. But it does seem in recent months to have been overwhelmed by young guys who know no more about detailing than I do (and I know zilch!). I'm not sure what can be done about that. Hopefully Mike Stoops will be able to turn things around. I suspect that if I were to cut down the frequency of my posting on MOL the overall quality of the forum would increase exponentially. For the forum's welfare, I am considering this alternative. :)

I agree with all the comments about AutoGeek. It really is a commercial forum whose sole purpose is to hawk products sold by AutoGeek. And of course, why shouldn't that be its purpose, since AutoGeek is footing the forum bills? The same might be said of MOL, yet the spirit of the two forums are very different. Thanks to the presence of Mike Phillips over the years, whose mantra "Find something you like and use it often" has sunk deep into the MOL consciousness, MOL has successfully avoided the bashing of non-Meguiar's products. The forum exists not so much to sell Meguiar's products as to instruct folks in their proper use. Not so at AutoGeek, unfortunately. Perhaps things will start to change there once Mike Phillips gets settled. Perhaps. But one thing for sure, AutoGeek is a successful enterprise. Those guys know how to sell their products, and they have developed a strong customer base. They are the gorilla in the American detailing garage.

TID has become my second favorite forum. It's a small community with some knowledgeable detailers. It is commercially sponsored and thus exists to promote products sold by Proper Auto Care, but so far it has avoided the kind of crass commercialism that sometimes characterizes AG. The TID employees who post here do not sound like sideshow barkers. This is a thin and difficult line to walk. It would be easy to get seduced by the dark side. I like TID a lot.

Detailing Bliss is an enjoyable, congenial forum. Nice guys. I love their love for Swissvax and Zymol products. For some reason, though, I have never felt quite at home at DB. I don't know why. Everyone has always been exceptionally polite to me, and one of their members even sent me some samples of various waxes when I first started to post there. I am still waiting for the right time to apply Vintage to my Luthien.

Detailing World is consistently excellent as a forum with some very knowledgeable and intelligent detailers. Where else but on DW can one find a scientifically informed thread on wax thickness? The contributions of Dave McLean (Dave KG) and Dom Colbeck (Dodo Factory) are particularly insightful. And I love the British wit. But I find the number of postings overwhelming. I just can't keep up with everything. The site simply has too much traffic.

Autopia remains, in my opinion, the place to go for the highest level of detailing expertise. I do not post there very much, for the obvious reason that I have nothing to contribute. I go there to listen and learn. But I will never be an Autopian. I'm just not serious enough about detailing. For me, detailing is a game and hobby, not a religion.

Cheers,
Al

Autopia remains, in my opinion, the place to go for the highest level of detailing expertise.

There may be a high level of expertise at Autopia, but there's Waaaaay too much of a "BASHING" mentality. Member bashing, product bashing, sarcasm, cliques, haters, etc., etc. Not for me.

UN im not sure if I know who you are refering to but Im pretty sure I am and I agree greatly! I have only posted one of my jobs because I dont feel I should be one to show off :D I have seen lots of full sun or close up shots lacking from posts at MOL lately. I even just read a post condoning the use of dawn soap for every car wash saying how great the paint looks! There are to many people that think they are experts after reading a few posts. I dont consider myself to even slighty know anything unless ive read it, bought it, and done it myself for a few months.

Al, dont stop posting! You have some of the best posts! they are always a blast to read! Aswell as Lusters usually hilarious comments and UN's too :)

I wont name names but there are a few individuals on MOL who post complete garbage and contribute nothing, only to think we are learning from them.

Okay, okay, I confess. I have published write-ups of my wash and wax jobs. No great sun shots. No dramatic before and afters. Just my Luthien.

I'll stop now.

No need to stop Al, I have always enjoyed your writeups and what you have to say.

How many times have I detailed my beloved Silverado and posted it.

When cranky take valium *LOL* Lots of them. :out:

No problem loading on TID. I'll echo with the group pertaining the other sites. Even so, I still visit MOL but the feel is somewhat different nowadays.
TID is a bit slower (postings) but I do still check few times a day if I managed to go online.

Regarding the posting thing, sometimes if Valium/Prozact is working, I'll post more. Even wash and wax jobs. Sue me (not applicable to UN:D)

Bottom line - TID is/will still remain among my favorites sites. How can you not visit if we have wacky & cranky people like UN.

I feel that there are good and bad members on every forum. You just hope that the bad ones don't post and the good ones stick around.

Every forum has good and bad characterics. Once we frequent a forum enough, we tend to concentrate on the bad qualities.

In general, I find it the most irritating when a new member instantly starts spouting off 'facts' that have no backing. For example, when the G110 was released, someone joined and stated that it was the same as the UDM.

Another common occurance is when a fairly new member asks a question and someone else responds with a copy and paste type answer. For example, you need X polish, X pad, and X machine. How is that taylored to their question? Why do they need this, this, and that? Or, a member gives rotary advice when they have never picked up one.

Oh well...

LOL!!! Everyone looks forward to your posts Al and I don't think I've ever seen you push yourself as an expert where you are not!

I enjoy seeing Luthien because usually it means you are testing a new (and often high priced) product!!! That was one of my qualifiers... but I'm still cranky.

If I could only get jurisdiction over you... the lawsuit would have already been commenced!!!!

"Wacky and cranky"... story of my life!
