Destroyed NSX

Alright, I finally got around to emailing myself a couple of the camera phone pics I took of that NSX I was talking about the other day...the one where they guy told me it has light swirls, only to find out he repainted over half the panels himself (used to own a bodyshop) and then proceeded to sand with 600 and then 1000 and then did a 1-step buf with a narly wool pad. Though it's hard to tell from the "before" pictures, I'd never seen such a mess - absolutely no gloss and train-tracks all over the repainted panels. I thing the dullness actually hid the extent of the damage in the pictures. Oh yeah, did I mention that he suggested that he was paying me too much ($300). Lesson - clients that think they know more than you are not good.

On the panels he repainted, he tinted the clear, and thus you see the color on the pads.

Just for those not familiar with wetsanding, finishing with 1000 is at least as 2X as course as is usual before proceeding to buffing; most people finish with 2000 and ideally 2500 grit.

I would have taken more pictures, but I was in a crunch for time to finish before dark.

Ouch, that looks pretty nasty. What did it take to correct that mess?

I used HT Extreme Cut and a 7" lambswool pad with high RPMs and lots of pressure to try to cut through that mess...you can see how black the wool pads got. I then compouned with a foam pad and polished twice.

FYI, The NSX from the Honda factory is a special hand applied paint process and the clear coats are all tinted.

The person did the right process in the color application although too much old school thinking on his part when it came down to completing the color sand and "detail" process.

RAG, Nice work on that. I would have turned and run away!

This is completely untrue in regard to the tinted clear on NSX's. It is a multi stage paint job but the clear isn't tinted on the black cars and you shouldn't pull color when polishing. This guy just did some half assed work with the "repaired" areas.

SpoiledMan,

I have colleagues who work at the Torrance Headquarters of Honda and they researched this info for another colleague of mine as he wanted to know the absolute correct process before he had paint work done on his 2004 NSX.

I can only assume by your statement that you perhaps may have detailed a black NSX and I can conclude that it may have been sprayed/resprayed inproperly as it should have tinted clear.

This "tinted clear" doesn't apply to the black cars and many other colors. It's the *minority* of colors(red and one or two others that I can't think of) that have the tinted clear. Proper paint process for a black NSX is clear paint with no tint to finish.

Just for kicks, you can call Toyota HQ and ask if their black Lexus cars have a normal clear or tinted clear. See how many answers you get for that.

Chris is correct. Black is not one of the NSX colors that utilize a tinted clear. Red and Yellow (Spa) do. Possibly one of the blues but I don't think so.

Thanks Paul. I was thinking about the "yellow" but couldn't remember the name. I had heard about one of the blue colors as well but didn't have the experience to back it up. Do you have a link to the paint process? I searched high and low and couldn't find it.

I don't get it, if they tint the reds why wouldn't they tint blacks, and what would Toyota have to do with it?

It's apparently done for depth of color on the red cars and the others I would presume as well.

What does it have to do with Toyota you ask? The poster above stated that he had the info researched by a friend at Honda HQ. You can call Toyota HQ and ask questions about paint process and get enough answers to make you head spin. It almost always turns heated in discussions here as well. A quick search will show you that it's been debated to death and to this date there doesn't seem to be a 100% answer to "is a black Toyota/Lexus SS, tinted clear or BC.

Thanks for the explanation I'm new here, being member of other forums that Ive been there longer I know what you mean about a dead horse, Ive seen red nsx cars and thats why they have such a deep red, looks like a one part paint, I guess thats the whole point you get the durability of a clear coat and the look of a single stage paint.

There is a little write up here.

I have a pdf illustrating the entire process but can't seem to find it right now:nixweiss

I'm not sure if it varied from year to year or not, but the non-repainted panels were not tinted clear (I pulled no color).

Couple other photos I forgot to post. I really wish I would have taken more...just way short on time.

And I must say, the unpainted panels had the stickiest paint I've EVER worked on - even with a green PII (AB pad) the pad really wanted to grip and torque me agound (rotary obviously)...I've never quite experienced anything like it. MAybe it was just becuase the paint had never ever been detailed and cared for, but it wasn't like Honda paint for sure.
