Dawn Dishwashing Soap, why?

just because soaps all have the same name (soap) doesn't mean they have the same active ingredients... would you use car shampoo on your hair or visa versa? probably not ... even all car shampoos or soaps are very different ...keep the dawn in you kitchen and the car shampoos(soap) in the garage ;)

I would use yours on my hair if just for the smell of it...plus I use Nattys Red instead of gel...

Great question, I was wondering the same thing. I was on another detailing site and a reputable detailer said he used Dawn to wash the vehicle. I was confused as to why he would do such a thing. I just don't see myself using Dawn or othe rdishwashing detergent.

They make a whole slew of products just for washing your car, so I am not sure why anyone would use it on the paint...

I guess then the opposing question would be why not use dawn. It suds heavily and loosens grease, grime and wax. I'm not admitting that I use it but I would also like to know what dawn does negatively to the paint. Have any tests been done... I'm going to do a search on this matter...

And that discussion was addressed in my first post.

There seems to be a never ending discussion about how bad dishwashing soap may or may not be for automobiles.

How about a discussion about why you would even want to use it in the first place?

Exactly the point I'm trying to make.
Even the makers of Dawn don't recommend using their products to clean cars.

So, back to my original question. Why would you want to use something that is:
1. Not recommended by the manufacturer for the purpose.
2. Has many people advising against it.
3. Has numerous substitute products to do the job people are using it for.
So far, all I see is justification for using it. Hey, I don't care if you use it, I just don't understand why it would even be considered in the first place.
(My bad, the fact that it is readily available was mentioned and that could be a reason.)

Ok Charles i concede the argument, however, I was once a zaino user and I had not seen any ill affects from using Dawn the one or two times. The other side of this product zaino is that you apply it to all exterior surfaces which may revive the trim and such....

It's not an argument, it's a discussion. :)
If I really knew what I was talking about, then I might argue. In this case, I really don't know.
I doubt that there were any bad effects from using Dawn one or two times.
In fact, I don't know there would be any bad effects if you used it all the time.
Given that the maker of Dawn doesn't recommend it and so many people seem to think it is bad for things and products are made for use on vehicle paint, I don't happen to use Dawn.

Your mentioning of Zaino pretty much explains why you used Dawn. Because Sal said to. :)
Personally, if I was going to use Zaino, I would skip the Dawn and use ZAIO which is made for paint cleaning.

Addendum: It's been quite a while since I used Zaino, but I probably used Dawn for a prep wash at that time. (Because Sal said to. :)) ZAIO wasn't available then.

Charles makes some good points...

We have products dedicated to washing cars, they are specifically intended for taking car of a vehicles finish...and then we have dawn, specifically for pots and pans, and everyday dishware. So why would you use it? Thats the million dollar question, well at least the $3.49 question...

probably because its there and available, so if you run out of car wash soap, and you have nothing else and you have that desperante need to wash you car, your mind begins to wander and wonder....hmmm how bad could this be...

which I am guily of doing...so now I make sure I always have about 5 gallons of car wash soap...just in case I go insane one day and need to wash my car over and over...

A couple of years ago I saw a neighbor washing their car with liquid Tide Laundry Soap w/ Bleach Alternative. :wall

Aren't they a DC forum member?
You might be remembering "Blinded".
Actually, in fairness to blinded, he took a post by Ron Ketcham a little too literally. Ketch was talking about Bleche-White and how bleach was often used to whiten things.
Blinded tried it on his white car. As I remember it, it wasn't a real good idea. :D

I have seen National Guardsmen polishing their trucks with Diesel Fuel.

They would do that before inspection and it did put some shine on the Olive Drab.
