costco microfiber

My vote is for the costco MF towels. They are fine, and dont scratch, I mainly use them for wipedowns, but they remove SG just fine. Also they are very cost effective, Cheap !

Hmmm, the description and the photo of the Viking towel closely resembles the towel from MicroTex. The MicroTex towel measures 23.5in. x 40in. for about the same money. Anyone have both towels and can compare the two?

I don't know about MT but the Viking is plush on one side and not plush on the other. The plush side is great for general detailing and the non-plush side is good for avoiding streaking. The edge has been reinforced with great stitcking and wont scratch anything. It's not a waffle weave but it's one good towel.

I have the Costco MFs, as well as some 'high end' MF (not from any of the sponsors here, but an on-line source). I reach for the Costco 9 out of 10 times. They work fine for me, and for the same price for 12 as I paid for 2 of the high end brand, I'll stick w/ Costco.

Wonder if they were $40 for 12 if they would get more respect? ;)

I woudln't say that if they were more money they would get more respect. I bought the pack in hopes that I would love them. I gave a few a good couple of weeks worth of usage and found that weren't tomy satisfaction. I hoped that they were going to be great, I would've went back and bought up some more packs and put them away for future use.

The Costco mf's rock. For the price, there isn't anything else out there that can touch them. I too, have spent more on some blue towels that didn't perform ANY better, with regard to absorbancy, material removal or scratching.

As with any mf, the secret is in caring for them. Treat them like clay if you drop them, and NEVER use one to wash the car.

I bought a pack last year in my n00b stages of Autopia. I can honestly say they are good towels. I'm sure there are better out there, but I've detailed quite a few cars and used them to buff off polish and wax with no problems. I do agree they get a little rough after a couple of washes. I recently went to Costco to pick up another pack for stuff around the house and it seems they added 4 more MFs, but the quality of the towels seemed lessened greatly. I bought the Eurow ones if that matters. I'll prob use my SMP MFs on my new car this spring and continue to use them on paying customers, but for details I do for free (family) these towels aren't bad. I think regardless of the application these towesl are a great value :up

I use costco towels and they work for me. Good price, stay soft. I do rinse them a couple of times and throw in some vinegar. They do leech color, because my white polishing pads are now yellow(everything goes in the wash together). Also, I hve had no problems cleaning glass. A couple wipes and everything is clean with a basic ammonia free window cleaner made by turtle wax.

Well I just joined this forum and i wish i had read this thread 3 months ago. I used the Costco Yellow colored microfiber towels to remove polish (Zaino) from my car. I used to wonder why it was so hard to get the polish off and i'd use more force to get it off. Finally, a month ago i realized fine scratches ALL OVER my car. Please do NOT use these towels for any kind of polishing.

I've learned my lesson the hard way, now i guess i'll need to get a porter cable to remove all those fine scratches...

First off...Welcome to Autopia!

I wonder why they'd cause the scratching problem on your car but not scratch a CD when rubbed as vigorously as I do when removing LSP's.

I've used them to remove Zaino, SG and GW with no ill effect.

Interesting.

hi peter,

yes i isolated everything else that could cause it.. i've had the car straight off the truck so i know the guys at the dealership didn't do their mumjo-jumbo waxing crap... and i bought these towels the very next day ... plus all the scratches are in the same direction that i buffed out the wax... up to down motions... they're super-fine meaning u can only see them if u look really really close...

In previous threads it was agreed that if you can rub it on a blank CD and not get scratches it's an OK towel.

I did that just now with 2 freshly laundered MF's. A Costco towel and a SONUS waffel weave drying towel. Of course I don't use a drying towel to remove polish or LSP's...but it was close at hand so what the heck.

Costso Towel.... Aggressive rubbing as you'd do to remove a LSP. Nothing. No scratches.

Sonus Waffel Weave Towel...Scratches. Probably because of something that didn't launder out of the towel from drying...but nevertheless.

From this I'd postulate that Costco towels can be safe to use ... High End towels can be unsafe. I believe laundering and proper storage have as much to do with it as anything.

>>>EDIT<<<

Costco Bulk Pack Cotton Towel...laundered as the MF's...no scratching.

Peter's post is breath of fresh air -- fair and objective. I've also found that COSTCO towels pass the CD test without a single scratch. How could they possibly mar the finish on your car? I've been using COSTCO towels on both of our new cars with perfect results. Go ahead and pay 10X more if you are superstitious about name-brand recognition.

Costco MF rule..its cheap and no scatches. Yep I tested on a CDR,CDRW and DVD RW..no scatch..Unbelivable

Were the towels straight from the package or had you laundered them first?

We've had this debate here before. I personally buy a pack of the Costco towels everytime I go there. I probably have 40 of them.

I also have Pakshak towels and Autofiber towels.

They all work great, at first.

But, with repeated use, the Costco towels get stiff and they retain stains. It is impossible to get them clean. So, by the third of fourth use, I wind up "retiring" them to household cleaning or to tires and doorjambs.

The Pakshak MFs look and feel a lot nicer. I personally don't think they work any better than the Costco towels at first. But, the main difference is that I have use the Pakshak MFs every week and they still function like new.

The Autofiber ones, IMO, are slightly below the Pakshak towels in overall quality but still nice.

Overall, I think the COSTCO MFs are a great deal for the price, and certainly worth having around. But, it is a mistake to view them as your "go to" towel.

Uncle,

That's what I suspected. Sounds more like an all purpose mf rather than one to be used as your final,perfection-seeking wipe down step.

My experience with the Microfiber Tech/ Autofiber and Pakshak are identical to yours. All of mine still function like new as well and Pakshak's Autopia prices are very reasonable as well :up

alanp: cool down, no-one said i was going to pay big bucks to buy brand names. relax.

peter: thanks, i think i figured out the problem, i had washed them , and maybe they started scratching my paint after the wash. makes sense.

For those who have had problems with the costco MF's getting stiff with time, is that even with using vinegar or a microfiber washing/ restore solution? Next I wonder if the Eurow or Detailer's choice (the two brands I think they sale) is any different.

I've washed my Costco towels with MicroRestore and Pinnacle and it made no difference.

BTW, I have yet to see any conclusive evidence that those products make a wit of difference. My Pakshak MF's come out nice no matter what I wash them in.
