Computer Build Time

Definitely. I have a few others that are in the planning stages after this build. One is going to be an extreme custom rig with a paint job that looks like something off of Gary Scelzi's funny cars.

Cancel everything and order a new MacBook !!!

They just released the 13" MacBooks today and pulled the 12" iBooks off the Apple site. I'm hoping they close out the iBooks for a discount, because I'm wanting a new one. I guess that'll be my new computer "build" :bounce

I bought my parents a mini for Christmas and they love it. Before the mini, they had an HP/Win98 PC ca. 1999. I was going over there about once a month just to straighten out one problem or the other. I think there was one small issue with the mini in the first week or two, but other than that I haven't had to touch it. Too bad Apple bumped the price by $100 when the introduced the Intel mini. I think $499 was a magic number.

Still waiting for a close-out G4 iBook or 12" Powerbook to replace my G3 iBook... :sosad

You are really taking your time building this computer :p.

I usually try to order all my parts and piece together in minutes. The technology and price changes so quickly, want to have that new pc while it is still considered "new tech".

I just spent the better part of this evening lapping the heatsink. In true Autopian fashion, I used 3M rubbing compound (Light cut), Klasse AIO, and a MF. The heatsink has a polished (not quite mirror) finish.

BTW, I decided to keep the stock heatsink that came with the Opteron. Has heat pipes and a decent fan on top of it.

Well, gang, I installed the heatsink and processor last night. Did a test firing and everything looks good to go. The next and final steps for this rig are the video card and the 500 GB Hard Drive.

I changed the Video Card to a 7900 GT and may consider the new WD 500 GB drive. In addition, I am going to use two Seagate 7200.10 750 GB drives for storage. In short, I will be the newest member of the Terabyte club. :chuckle:

Once I install the drive and video card, the software will be the final step. I will have to download a few things to reinstall including GetDataBack, CounterSpy, SmartFTP, Firefox, Opera, Palm Desktop, and others.

To celebrate, I plan to go and buy an iPod 60 GB after the dust settles. :D

jaobrien: She runs pretty nicely. It ran through CounterSpy at a pretty good clip.

Prometheus: Since I have installed SiSoft's Sandra, I'll be posting the benchmarks for it pretty soon.
