Comments appreciated--128 vs. GTI

HappyWax and jswhitley,

Thank you!

HW-I am really intrigued by your new project. I'd rather be working on that project than be building a parking spot by my garage for my Focus, once the BMW shows up. I can't, and won't, park on the street.

Can't wait to see how it goes. Good luck!

You could have gone to a Porsche as well depending if you want a cab or coupe. The Cayman is one hell of a car.

Whichever you go with, enjoy as this now becomes the fun part of your life and time to enjoy the things that excite you.

I get to drive my friend's Cayman S, since I detail it. It is indeed one fine car. Driving it up to my daughter's college dorm was priceless.

However, it is substantially more expensive than the $35K 128 I have ordered. I was interested in something fun to drive, but I am at the upper end of my "budget."

Deanski--Since I have your attention, I do recall that you were into a product search for the leather on your 997. I think you chose a Sonus product, IIRC.

Any recommendations for BMW Boston leather?

Thanks!

Yes, I went with Sonus. So far so good. Does what it says it will and makes my leather feel the same it was when I took delivery. Not any type of oil or slipperyness at all, in fact, the opposite which works well since I have the A.S.S. (Adaptive Sport Seats) which are really great seats with soooo many adjustments. Only which they came in carbon fiber backed like the new GT2 seats!

The other product line I'm looking at is Leather Master line as it comes from people who work and deal with leather for the most part. I'll have to play with it, but everyone I know who's used it, really likes to speak highly of it.

Remember, you don't need much to clean leather well. Woolite/water mix works very well as most cleaners are nothing more than a Woolite type soap mixed with water, coloring, fragrence etc.

Sometimes you end up trying products, but for interiors, you have to really on the money as trying something and finding it damaged the leather it can be more costly than painting a panel.

Stay away from products mostly used in tack rooms and old English leathers. One mfg who did well in tack equipment maintenance now has several products in the automotive leather treatment line.

Glad to hear your getting the car you really want.

Post pics wheneer you can.

Regards,

Deanski

I will try the Sonus. There are some other Sonus products I like, so I will add it to the next order.

Thank you for responding!

The car is off the ship, and will be on its way to the dealer in a couple of days. I'm excited, though I'll admit that my girlfriend's one year, post-breast cancer MRI came in this week and it was clean---that's the best news. That was the best news of the week.

I am not as tech savvy as I should be, but I will get pics up after I get it looking the way I want.

I work part-time as a tennis pro, and one of my best clients is a commercial pilot, who owns two planes as well. He has offered to fly me the 120 miles to go pick up the car.

Now, that would be an interesting way to go pick up a new car.

PS - Thanks, Deanski, for your "leather" comments.

Yeah, no doubt about that being the *best* news :xyxthumbs

Hey, Moe! & Deanski- I too am always trying different leather products, what works great for one application can be awful on another.

Regarding the Sonus/Leather Masters products- LM makes a "medium" strength cleaner that works better than their usual stuff and/or the Sonus cleaner. Not that *that* should be an issue with this new car but for other, well-used, vehicles both the LM mild cleaner and the Sonus cleaner can be too gentle by far.

The Sonus protectant is *OCCASIONALLY* a bit sticky for some reason, whereas the LM dressing never is. I first thought it was because the Sonus cleaner is a "no-rinse" product but the dressing behaved that way when I cleaned with other stuff too. Doesn't always do it but it sure does on the leather in my Yukon for some reason :nixweiss

Doubt you'd be unhappy with either product though, in the overall sense. Just gotta find the right product/application matches.

WOW, great news!:2thumbs::woohoo:

I remember well the days (months) waiting for the Porsche and then getting the info it was on boat, found the boat and was able to track it until it arrived in Baltimore. Dealer expedited a truck to get it.

Take your time when you get it, go over every little detail on it and learn the new surface and possible areas that may be a problem when protecting or polishing etc.

Sonus seems to work very well for German leathers. Made my car's leather feel new, firm and not slippry or greasy and was the opposite where it makes you feel you're more "planted" in the seat. It seems like it grips your pants to the leather!

Are you going to have paint film on it? At least get the headlights, door cups and lower areas covered.

Prior to delivery, charge your camera and put in a fresh memory stick in it as you WILL be taking lots of pics that you will share with us!!!!:grinno:

I'm happy for you and I know it's close!:)
