Comcast.... :angry

I get home on Wednesday and open up IE. 404 time after time. I checked my modem and only 2 lights were on instead of 4. I then turned on my TV and nothing but snow. I called Comcast to let them know and they said the soonest they could have someone out was Sunday evening! Huh? My introductory rate for broadband is over so my cable and high speed internet bill is now $132 a month, or $1608 per year. I certainly expect better service than I am getting when I have a problem.

Their excuse? A lot of people got HD TVs for Christmas so they have a lot of installs to do. So? Why to new customers get priority over current customers? That is like a restaurant getting your order wrong and then saying they won't fix the problem until they make everyone else's order. It isn't acceptable for a $5 value meal, it certainly is not acceptable for a $132 a month cable and internet bill.

I am now looking into satellite for my TV and wireless internet. The only problem is my son has wireless internet and couldn't get a clean signal where I live. I don't want to go to DSL because a 1.5 mbps connection is going to seem very slow compared to my current 6 mbps connection.

Anyone else make the complete break from cable? Any other good options?

Oh, the other great thing about Comcast (or the phone co.) is when they tell you that they aren't having any problems in their system, it must be your modem/computer/interior wiring/etc., and then you go on a wild goose chase for hours/days, when it always IS their problem.

Scott, make sure they give you a credit for the days/hours that your service is out. I have Directv for tv, and been nothing but happy with the service. I do have Adelphia for my internet, and no major problems to speak of (it was the only broadband available in my area). I looked into satellite internet, (direcway, if i remember correctly) but it was real expensive.

I've been having a comcast problem lately

i loose my internet connection and i have to power cycle the modem and it comes back on

they came to my house 2 times and it still does it even with a new modem.

Good for me = Stream is FAST as all get out and I haven't had an outage that I can remember that lasted more than about 30 minutes.

Bad = I pay $57 dollars a month to Comcast.:(

I'll say this much - we had Pacbell DSL and then Comcast in California, we moved to Canada and got Bell Canada/Sympatico first then switched to Rogers. They all suck. It's sad, but the best you can do is find the one that sucks the least and hope they don't screw you.

Hmmm...what a surprise  Around here, Comcast has a contractor do the internet "repairs"...after the second time they were out, telling me (phone support) it was my modem, my wiring, etc., I talked about it with the contractor (it was working when he got there) and asked him point blank whether he thought the problem was in my house and his answer was "no, their {Comcast's} network is old, and frankly, it's falling apart, and instead of fixing it, all we hear about is the rollout of VoIP". When I complained about the waste of my time, and the money they were paying his company to chase phantom problems, he said "it's cheaper than upgrading the network". Anyway...

They said they will credit me but big deal? What about supplying me with alternate ways to entertain myself while both cable and internet are out? And even worse, it is obviously a problem at the box since both are out. How hard is it to send a truck by to spend 10 minutes finding the problem? Last time it was out, someone had tapped into my cable. If that is the case this time, I am calling the cops immediately and I expect the tech to ping the line to see where it is going and I am going to press charges.

Shoot, Scott, that just reminded me about my friend who lives in a 3-family house, one of the apartments moved out, and my friend's cable goes out one day, just like yours. So she happens to ask the new people if their cable is out too, and they say "no, we just got ours installed today!". Yes, you guessed it, they disconnected hers and hooked it up to the new neighbors...then told her they couldn't come back for a week to fix it! Gotta love Comcast!

Verizon is rolling out FIOS (fibrt optic tv/internet) around here. It is actually faster than Comcast's cable internet, and is cheaper. Check with Verizon to see if they are setting up FIOS in your area.

Well said Scott. I too get very angry when my connection doesn't work because for what I pay it should work (barring any severed lines or major problems) and my DL/UL speed should be as advertised. Cable sucks period. Rates are astronomical, channel line ups suck, and service leaves something to be desired. I can't STAND the fact that these people are allowed to have a strangle hold on local markets and we have to eat what they give us.

So true, so true.

Unbelieveable.

Scott I feel your pain!! I too have comcast and at least once every month it is out when I get home from work or even when I am right in the middle of working on the comp. Then after calling customer service tech on phone they diddle around on their end and poof it works again....pain in the *** for the amount we pay every month.

You can search for broadband services in your area at DSL Reports and also at The ISP Guide. We have Comcast also, luckily no outages, but we're on the intro rate (19.99 six months) then back to DSL after that. Just won't pay that $44 month. Supposedly a local DSL provider has "up to 10mb speed"...we'll see. There's usually good broadband deals posted at Fatwallet.com in the Hot Deals forum.

Someone was jacking with the cable box. The repair guy said he fixed a similar problem in my building earlier this week. If the morons at customer service had made him aware of my problem, he could have fixed it then. :(

I feel for ya ScottWax. I have Comcast and have the same problems. I had an intermitenet outage problem for three weeks. They kept telling me it was my problem. Finally after three weeks they figured out it was a Node in the main box down the street. Turns out the whole neighborhood was having problems! You'd think they'd say soemthing liek"oh we have a problem in your area and we're working on it" Nope. Instead its my problem.

As far as switching goes. I'm not sure who can fill the bill. I have and HD box with HD DVR, plus a 6MB connection. How do you replace that for $140 or less? Dish Network wants big $$ for the HD DVR. Not to mention the way I wired my house I can have 9 TVs including one in the garage. If I go with the Dish I need a box for every one of those rooms. Kinda tough to turn down cable in the garage. What else will I do waiting for the wax to dry? Might as well watch Speed TV! :D

Hopefully someone comes up with a decent solution soon, or Comcast gets thier act together and gets new networks.

Direct TV for me. I recommend it. 24/7 service and most things can be fixed right over the phone. Say one day you decide you want to subscribe to Showtime or any othe movie package, Just call them and with a touch of a button you have your new channels. Also a good percentage of problems can be repaired by unplugging your receiver for @ 30 seconds and plugging it back in and its fixed.

I have never had them out for a major repair, so I can't speak for the door to door service. That can be a good thing though. Service is never interupted unless a bad storm with heavy clouds blocks the satellite from your dish. When the storm clears its all good.
