CMA white pad fell apart and it was smoking....

This is the e-mail I sent to CMA asking if I would be able to get a new pad or if I was stuck with the one I have:

----------------------------------------

I have been using a CMA white foam pad for my Porter Cable machine and it fell apart.

I have been using the Porter Cable on speeds set at 5 and once in a while I have it set on 6. I do not apply any pressure because I am just using 3M Swirl Mark Remover for weaker jobs. I have used the pad for a total of 5 maybe 7 jobs at most. I used the pad last weekend in the shade (it was 70 degrees outside) and the foam seperated itself for the velcro backing. When I looked at the pad it was literally smoking and hot to the touch. I did however use that pad for 4+ hours non stop, I still have it un washed so I could show you. I did not change the pad because it was not gunked up with product yet, it was still working perfect.

Up until now I have never had a problem with your products but it seems there may be a fault with this one specific pad. I was never informed that I could only use a pad for a specific amount of time or at a specific speed for a set amount of time. I just thought I would use the pad until it needed to be swapped. There was no indication that the pad had to be swapped until it was too late.

--------------------------------

What do you guys think, I was never told to use the pad in a specific way and I was not over using it because it didn't need to be swapped out. I would THINK I should get a new one...

Just a little peice of advice for you guys, if your going to use those pad's at high speeds, don't use it for more than 2 hours before swapping it out. If you ask me you don't even want the foam to get warm nevermind hot because over time it will weaken the glue.

See, smoking IS a killer! :D

How is the paint? If I had a pad smoking I would be concerned with bigger things than the pad!

The paint is fine, looking better than ever if you ask me.

The problem I had is the yellow pad was al gunked up and I didn't have another so I thought I would use the weaker product from 3M (swirl mark remover) and the white pad at a high speed to make up for the strenght of the 3M Fine Cut rubbing compound and yellow pad. It took alot longer, I didn't have to worry about hazing as much but the darn pad feel apart.

------------------------------------------

It's only been a few hours and they already responded to me letting me know that the pad incident was just something that happens and they would be happy to send a free one (they already shipped it out) to replace it. I don't need to send in the old one either. Pretty good customer service. :up

I think the SUV was a 1999 model, once again, I get the HUGE car that looks like it was never detailed.

Porter Cable, yellow pad and 3M FC took two passes and left the surface perfect, I'm talking no hazing, no smaller swirls or nothing. The SMR wouldn't do squat, I had to go over the surface so many times.

I'm not at all surprised. These pads do not last for ever. 4+ hours is a LOT of time on a pad, especially if you're working it.

I sincerely doubt you saw smoke. You saw a bunch of residue powder fly off in a cloud. I have tried to to get my pads hot with the PC all the way on 6, and with a lot of pressure - and while I can get them good and warm there is NO WAY I can get them hot enough to smoke or melt.

If you don't have a rotary, then you need to get one. Will really speed up those jobs.
