Clear Coat Thickness and Paint Removal by Polishing

Many thanks to everyone involved in this fruitful and thought provoking debate!



A lot of my friends ask me in all honesty 'hey how many times can you polish and aren't you 'eating' the color away?'. This thread is indeed the beginning of being able to tackle that question.



I just read through all 5 pages. I needed to bring to mind my chemical engineering studies to comprehend roughly the interesting information mentioned.



My initial estimation following the read seems to be that with caution and prudence the clear coat can function for a long time while being polished to perfection.



Just one more quick 'food for thought'/springboard source on UV, apart from all the ones already mentioned by the highly estimed and knwoledgeable posters.

You're going to have to wait for the grand finale coming in the next couple months to see the final results & assessments of my review. :nana: For the record, I sanded the hood flat (lots of 1500), coated 1/2 of it, nothing on the other 1/2 and have washed with Dawn & touchless washes (w/o hot wax)while it remains in the hot sun (engine running) everyday. Even though I didn't take any initial readings prior to the test, I have measured the car after and the readings are all over the map on the hood. As much as a .8 variance from coated(peak) to bare (low).

Correct. Turned 60,000 on the way back from MI and it flagged me for a new one. Ordered white this time. Gotta start thinking of what's going to be in strore for the next one? Maybe a coating shootout?
