Cart (workstation) suggestion?

Hey folks, I was thinking of buying some sort of rolling cart that could follow me around a car. As you could imagine, searches didn't help much because for one, "cart" results are mostly about online shopping carts it appeared to me. For shelves in the garage, I go the affordable route, and so affordable was my first inclination; something like this for $33, the Whitmor:

Amazon.com: Whitmor 6056-344-N Supreme Cart, Chrome: Home & Garden

Then after browsing some more, I thought a handle would be great, because I could throw a towel over it, so to speak. Like this $60 unit (yep, price has now doubled):

Amazon.com: Seville Classics SHE18304 18-Inch by 34-Inch by 33-1/2-Inch Industrial All-Purpose Utility Cart, Chrome: Home & Garden

Then I started thinking about how nice a "solid" shelf would be (at least one, though all would be better), because I know with my garage shelf that is "chrome wire" or whatever, bottles can easily tip over if not placed just right in regards to the "wires". Oops, add another $25 (and no handle):

Amazon.com: Seville Classics SHE18321 Stainless Steel Kitchen Workstation: Home & Garden

I can see myself placing my DA's on the bottom shelf, between sessions, or during breaks, so that the DA could never roll over and have the pad hit the ground. I might have come across one with both a handle and solid shelf, but I can't find it if I did. What do you guys all think? Not worth it? Gets in the way, and gets tangled with power cords? Runs away on you on a garage floor?

On a different product topic altogether, and if I remember correctly from reading an older thread, a seated creeper is generally considered to possibly be harmful to our health? (Sometimes I think it could be a relief to have, but I honestly don't know.) Just get on a knee, keep the back straight, and if very low, perhaps just sit on the ground?

I appreciate the thoughts, per usual.

Rubber Maid has some good ones, like you want, Harbor Frieght has one close, both are not "metal" which is better.

There is another one, Luxo, out of Chicago, that makes a great one.

Most of the "on-line" sources are just reselling these units, at an increased price.

Thank you both very much for the suggestions, Ron and David. It unfortunately appears that going with something else besides metal will multiply the price by a factor of about 3-4x. Shoot. The supplied USP link was very nice, and I saw this Rubbermaid that looked like just what I was looking for (outside of being metal), but then I saw the $238 price tag, shucks.

Harbor Freight might just be the perfect suggestion, since I'm looking for a lower price tag. It costs only $35 for this one, just about the price of the Whitmor, but it has a design that is so much closer to what I'm looking for, thanks again.

It's too bad that I don't see any locking wheel mechanism on any of the above, but maybe I won't miss one too much. I am guessing that Luxo was intended to be "Luxor", and gee they sure make a wide variety of carts for very specific applications and industries, pretty cool. Cheers, I'm already much closer to what I am looking for.

Most hardware outlets, Lowe's, Home Depot, etc have casters you can put on (replace)to have the locking wheels you want.

Suggestion?

If you go with the metal type, buy some sponge/foam that is insulation for water pipes, cut it down the center and place over the edges that may accidentaly come in contact with a vehicle. An inexpensive tube of 3M trim adhesive will hold them in place.

Which is why I perfer the plastic ones, but understand what you are saying about price differences.

Grumpy

Thank you for the suggestion, I will look for and ask about this stuff next time I'm at a big box hardware store. Regarding the 3M Trim Adhesive, it appears they make at least a few variations (I've looked at 3M stuff just long enough to no longer be surprised), and if I had to guess, methinks you might be talking about this stuff here?

i picked up a black wire cart at target a while back, 3 shelves plus 2 wire drawers. And I want to say it was less than $50. The bottom shelf is basket like too.

You could use that 3M, however I use the "trim adhesive" in a tube. It's less expensive and easier to apply to small areas without making a mess.

Grumpy

I have the second one on your list. Similar to the first but with bigger/better hard rubber wheels. Roll better, especially over rougher surfaces, easier to lock, and will probably last longer than the small plastic ones. I got mine at Home Depot and it came with a small basket (perfect for holding a DA) and set of hooks (extension cords) that hang off the side.

I'm not a pro so I don't need something that will last several life times. Harbor Freight is an excellent source. I bought two solid oak work benches for my garage and my work room and they're fantastic at a super price. As for the cart, look for one there. I got one from Home Depot , Husky brand. Really saves room and makes things mobile!

Wow, thanks everyone.

Ah ok, it must be this here. Ron, you weren't kidding about increased price with some online sources. Home Depot is selling the cart below, which looks like a dead on match to the Harbor Freight cart, but sells for more than a 50% increase in price.

Thanks for the comment. It must be the Seville 18x34 you are talking about. Bottles don't tip over easily on the chrome wires as you move the cart about?

Costco has a few nice options that are pretty reasonable (I think they're online only) that I've been looking at for myself. Seem similar to the same thing sold by other companies for about half the price.

Costco - TRINITY 3-Tier Utility Cart

Costco - Luxor 3 Shelf Utility Cart

These look very interesting, and I think the Trinity could now be my #1 pick so far. While $45 more than the HB, I wouldn't have to buy locking casters, insulation, or glue. I get two handles as well. The Luxor looks nice, but I'd prefer if the handle wasn't partitioned, that there were two handles instead of one, and it does cost just a tad more by $10. Thanks for these excellent suggestions. I may stop by my local Costco to see if they have anything locally. (Nothing against online ordering, but I could pick up a few things anyway, heh.)

I will have to stop by sometime locally, because I can't find it online as of yet. I have a number of affordable Husky products, mostly small drivers/tools/wrenches of sorts, and also an air compressor for my tires.

IIRC, that Husky cart was ~$40 but it was during the last holiday season. I don't know if it's a regularly stocked item and i couldn't find on it on their site.

HF is a lifesaver for sure. Luckily there's one less than an hour from me. I'll eventually be looking to get an impact gun from them.

Didn't see this post till just now. Add yet another thing to the Home Depot shopping list for me, then, LOL. I think I still have some of that adhesive. Thanks for the tip, Ron!

I havn't had any problems with most bottles on the wire shelves but I guess smaller bottles may be a bit less stable. I hand spray bottles off the side of the cart by the trigger. You could always line the shelves with a piece of wood or hardboard.

Ah oh course, that's how I store all of my spray bottles- but I guess I was thinking about my polishes.

True. There is probably an easy way of securing it too, without it sliding or rattling about. Thanks for your response.

Dollar type stores, WalMart, etc have small plastic bins or storage pans that are available in various sizes, CHEAP!

Measure the size of the bottles, figure what sizes of bin is best, then use some "automotive double stick trim tape" to fasten them to the cart (won't slide around that way), and you got what is needed.

Regular double stick tape won't hold up for long.
