Car Care Myths

Couldnt agree more about the dawn. People spend big bucks on all these special car care products that wash with dawn. Never understood that.

Never realized about the sheeting action either, but that makes perfect since now!

Thanks!

I dunno...I use dawn to strip and its pretty damn sqeekly clean, both paint and gelcoat. I do use a lot though , like 3-4 oz in a wash bucket. Followed by an ISP wipe and it's pretty bare.

I also just do BF total polish and seal as above that is always more blackfire stuff...

I had use P21S Total Auto Wash to strip and found work fine for me, but a little to much money wasted going this route.

When stripping off waxes and sealants I usually use 1-2oz of APC in my wash to aid in the removal. I just make sure not to let the wash solution dry on the paint.

Thanks man,

I would think that washing with APC would be better than any wax stripper because then you can also properly clean the trim. Am I right???

Question, would adding an APC to your wash solution really work if your wash liquid that you are using contains a wax base? I don't think Dawn is such a bad thing to use on a natural wax but I just tried it on a synthetic type wax that was on my car and although it did work to an extent it didn't remove all the wax as it still had a water shedding or some beading action left. It did clean well but I just think a wax remover in my case would have worked better.

Adding APC can only enhance the cleaning and stripping abilities, it is not a perfect solution. Depending on how new /strong your current LSP is it may take multiple applications to get the job done.

I agree and practice the best way to truly remove wax or sealant is to clay and/or use a paint cleaner. Having a strong wash solution just helps in the process.

Todd, maybe consider adding to this list as time goes on.

Some other ones some get confused on such as claying removes swirls, the presence of certain chemicals (like silcones) in products makes them bad, etc.

Bunky, I was searching for this old thread and found your recommendations. Duly noted, I will rewrite this one!

Ive had several customers request a" good thick coat of wax".

Maybe I should explain its not a good way to apply wax(Im afraid they wont belive me) so I just smile and say "sure".:D

IMO grit guards and 2 buckets are over rated

Cotton towels rule over Microfiber too

Say it ain't so. I really like grit guards. On their own they won't make a great wash but I leave my mitts sitting in the bucket during a wash and just fee like it keeps them from sitting in the residue in the bottom of the bucket.

I guess i better return my case of dawn soap and pick up some palmolive. It actually smells better and is on sale. Thanks for the heads up. Thanks.

I didn't realize the amount of people out there that think a DA machine polisher will burn the paint, melt through the hood and engine, and continue to dig for china. Even some so called car guys I've encountered seem to take this myth for truth .

What a horrible myth we have to deal with

Heard it the other day "NO DON'T BUFF MY CAR! After you buff it one time i'll have to keep doing it! All I need to keep my (black) car perfect is a solid wax job once a week" I looked at him with a blank stare and pointed at the horrendous condition of his paint in direct sun light. He continued to instruct me to just use my best paste wax on the car.... I then told him I'd never waste black ice like that and that HD Fill.. ummm i mean poxy would be a much better choice lol.

They gotta be older since that's what we used to say......

(you should remember :lol2: )

now scuze me while I go hide under my rock, till my wit/wisdom/charm is needed again.
