California Detailers Beware

I wouldn't listen to anything but Fox News! Why do you think Canada doesn't allow it - it's because they speak the truth and the Canadian govt. doesn't want their voters to know what's really going on.

Kind of intersting that they allow Al-Jazeera though - what does that tell you?

I understand AL Jazeera was given permission to be carried by cable and satellite providers here in the great white north recently. What you may not have heard was that no one took them up on their request to be carried (at least to my knowledge). A specific condition of their licence was that they be monitored 24 hours a day by the broadcastor and by censored if they broadcast anything that was deemed to be "offensive". Of course none of the cable or satellite providors are going to go to those lengths to carry a channel that would be palatable to a tiny minority of the population. I believe the CRTC knew this and granted the license with this stipulation to avoid a lawsuit for denying it. Pretty smart in my opinion.

By the way, anyone can get Fox news up here on your lovely American satellite signal which we don't have to pay for!

Seedy-looking guy with long trenchcoat standing on the corner of Hollywood and Vine. He walks up to the guy in the Porsche waiting for the light to change....

"Psssst, I got some real Florida Souveran Pinnacle Paste wax and Meg #16 Dude!" ;)

I can see the black market for wax taking off. A guy lives in a bordering state and smuggles in cases of waxes, glazes and quick detail sprays.

I think enough people here at Autopia will secretly supply our California friends in need of quality car care products.

I wonder if these enforcement officials will be making random check of detail shops and pulling over mobile detailers to search for contraband. :D

Don’t put it past them, we have stop and go emission spots checks in Orange County, CA, and sometimes they setup license check points. So to actually have the police stop you and check you while you are on the highway, such as highway patrol does to check big rigs...not a far cry. I for one if needed will be heading to another state to get the products I need to provide a decent service to the customer I work for. Simple as that.

5 years from now I'm thinking it's going to be WAXhibition.

Love the WAXibition comment. What's next broccoli...you know it causes gas (VOC's). Can you guess largest contributor of VOC's. I've been told it's cow! Wonder if a mad cow contributes more.

But seriously the word "can't" means eyes closed when it comes to chemistry. Effective products can and are being built. NXT seems to be very popular and I'm sure it's compliant.

Funny thing is the EPA is after the cow farmers in the Inland Empire area of Southern Cal for this exact thing. They want them to clean up the dung more than twice per year because of the pollution that comes from it!!

LOL, I go to school out there and I can honestly say I wouldn't mind if they cleaned it up! :D

Just to chime in,

I know Meguiar's has been active in fighting against these new regulations for many reasons but at least one reason is because many of the regulations are very strict and there are so many other things that our Government could focus on that would make more sense.

That said, after the fight, when the Government won, Meguiar's has chosen to comply with the laws and regulations. This means going to great expense to reformulate products to comply with the regulations while still performing as good, or better than before. R&D has been and is... busy.

As pointed out, Meguiar's new Detailer line is California VOC compliant all the way to 2008.

This includes by the way, our Glass cleaner, and ironically enough, a new product called "Body Solvent".

Mike

Ah crap, I just found this thread and annoucement. Come on Meguiar's, I know your genuis chemists can produce products that perform great AND be compliant to the new regulations. :D

I think that the state should be focusing on bigger things. Come on, car care products? Oh wait, they can't because the larger industries have lobbyists.

We've got lobbyists and they did the best job they could. You would be very unhappy if we didn't have them. In some cases they negotiated 50% increases in some product catagories and got others deregulated. In fact both of us Mothers and Meguiars fought hard for you guys and other manufacturers alike. When I spoke to the board I remember 4 companies fighting for less regulation, Mothers, Megs, Blue Coral, Mark V and two companies asking for stiffer regulations No Touch and 3M.

I think Mike was trying to tip over that big tractor during those years.

cool, thanks for the info :xyxthumbs.

I think it's great that Meguiars, and others, are already hard at work (some products already compliant) BUT I worry about the cost being passed on to the detailer, the little guy out there already having to swim with the cut throat detailers who always want to undercut them. I mean R&D is NOT cheap and that extra cost of finding new potions and/or re-developing exsisting formulas has to be made up and it is the detailer who will be making it up.

In turn they must then raise their prices and pass that on to their clients but I fear that many detailers may lose some clients over this, sadly.

Hopefully we might see prices lower from this all.......wouldn't that be great?!

Anthony,

I spoke with my Auto Magic distributor today and he said that Auto Wax Company, Inc. is discontinuing ALL their solvent based chemicals. I am a big solvent based tired dressing fan but a lot will disagree on it's use.

He also sai that 3M will be hit the hardest because their income from the Finesse-It line and Imperial generates over $200 million a year just in sales for that line. They will have to pull off the shelf and discontinue by January 25th 2005 or be faces with a $10,000 fine per day if they keep the products warehoused.

If you ask me, this is just total BS. Nature heals itself no?

Thanks for the informative update:up

I had heard that about the solvent dressings on another forum...really sad to see this happening BUT I am anxious to see what will be concocted up to replace the solvent based dressings. If nothing good comes out of this there will be many outlaw detailers out there.......and suppliers too:eek:
