California Car duster

How long is one supposed to leave the CCD on newspaper when it's new? Any particular position that the strands should be in?

thx

:xyxthumbs

48 hours. Just flat on the newspaper, I move it around a few times also.

All you black car people (or for that matter any dark color) beware: The CCD is best used before you go out rather than after, as any time in the sun raises the temp of the car surface enough to make it a streak machine as the parafin melts from the fibers. Otherwise it works wonderfully!:up

When this DOES occur, what needs to be done...? It's not detrimental to the paint is it? It will come off with a wax or cleaner correct?

Not to worry, Chris.... cleans right up with a little QD... problem is, why use it in the first place if you are going to QD? Just try to make sure the surface is cool before you use it to avoid the extra work.

Everyone has their own way of doing things, but I always use the CCD before QD. It seems like a good idea to remove the layer of dust with the CCD so the QD is less likely to create any swirls or scratches moving that dust around. May not be necessary, but it works for me.

It only takes a couple minutes to CCD your ride. Less dust to pick up with the QD. Less dust/less abrasion.

With my black exterior, I really agree ...I can't imagine owning a dark vehicle without also owning and using a CCD. An amazing timesaver. I've had 2. With each one, once it's broken in well with several uses, I rarely saw/see paraffin streaks, even when the car is hot.

Just need a light, deft touch and shake it out a little more when the temp's are up.

Here's a tip: If you want to break your CCD in a little faster, use it on your TV(s) first.

I started using the CCD before QDing last week and I have to say I'm amazed at how much less dirt my MF picks up now. I have to flip/fold it less often, and it went from being gray and having "significant dust" on it to being "almost clean". No exaggeration!

And when I'm feeling too lazy or pressed for time to do a proper QD, a quick dusting makes it very clean looking by itself. I love my CCD. :up

If the weather is dry I CCD each day and CCD with a QD the third day. Car always looks good that way. I still bucket wash any time enough dust stays in the cracks and crevices that I notice it.

Recently I have been using Quick & Easy Wash once a week with very good results, as well. Lots of good stuff out there.

I must have been misusing my CCD. It swirled the hell out of my car. Everytime I think about giving it another shot I just think back to all those swirls... I did the only thing I could with my CCD:

Maybe I'll give it another shot sometime. Fortunatly my car is white so the dust doesn't really show up on it. I sure did a number on my green car with it though.

Hey Jngrbrdman:

The CCD has been a staple in my detailing collection for over ten years with no problems other than the break-in paraffin smears.

Try it again, but maybe just on one panel to see if it causes you a problem again. Like just the trunk or one fender. That way you won't have created a major problem for yourself. By the way, the first one I bought some 12 years ago is still in use. I have two of the wood handle originals and a larger wood handled one that has the yarn all the way around it. I think they called it a "Super" duster at the time I bought it. That was probably 4 - 5 years ago and I haven't seen one since.

LOL, I remember reading that a while back and thinking, "Nah, he must be kidding..." but then I saw it mentioned again and again, and you used the phrase "I'm not kidding!" :D I think this is one thing that you will be "infamous" for. ;)

LOL I guess if I have to be infamous for something then it might as well be that. lol I loved that car and since I couldn't bear to think that I did the damage myself, I had to blame something. The duster was as good of an excuse as any. Even now when I think about giving it another shot I see my beautiful car with swirls that I know were caused by the duster. I must have been pushing on it or something... I wish I would have taken pictures of that sacrifice though. lol

ok i just picked up a cali duster from pep boys. it has the black plastic handle. Is this still the real one? I read on this thread too that you have to put it on newspaper to absorb the wax? And should you use it before taking the car out on a sunny day or after taking it out?

You bought the retail (WalMart and discount part stores) version, it has a smaller mop head than the wood handle one (about half the size) Not saying the one you have will not work, I have had both and prefer the bigger one. The plastic handle one sells for about 9.95 and the better one is 16.95 to 19.95

Like KEVO said, I'm sure it's "real" and will work, it just has finer/fewer fibers. Both versions say "Original California Car Duster", and the cheaper ones here have a beige plastic handle. Yup, wrap it up in newspaper for a few days. I started using mine after 3 days, but put it back in paper for 2 or 3 additional days. Before or after driving doesn't matter - what does matter is not to use it on a hot surface so you won't melt some of the wax on to the finish. Enjoy! :)

I got the black plastic handle one and it sold for 15 bucks. Did I pay too much? Did I get the better one? Either way this duster looks big to me:) and should work

I've got a beige platic handled one that I've had for at least 5 years. It works great. I wanted to warn anyone that is considering washing it, though. I washed mine and it is nice and clean now and does a great job still. However, that red dye got everywhere. Thank goodness I did it in the kitchen where the sink is metal. I'm sure it would have ruined any porcelain or plastic sinks. My hands were dyed red for about a week. I used warm water and some Tide.
