Buff and Shine Torture Test

Before we added Buff and Shine to our store, we were clearly aware of their reputation. Buff and Shine pads are known to be STRONG. They have a reputation of having super durable pads that never delaminate. My mission for this review, is to put that reputation to the test.

Here's the complete line of 5.5 inch Buff and Shine Pads that we carry (we carry other sizes as well):

For this torture test, I decided to use the Orange Pad (medium cut pad). This is their second most aggressive pad in the lineup.

My initial impression, is that these pads feel GREAT. Each pad is individually wrapped to keep them "fresh" before use. The foam material feels and looks uniform. The backing material is SOLID. I tried to wedge my fingernail between the foam and velcro backing with no success. This pad is ONLY $5.99, which makes it the least expensive Flat Pad on Autopia-CarCare.com but they don't look like the least expensive pads.
At least not yet...let's see how they hold up.

Here's a new 32 oz bottle of BLACKFIRE SRC Compound, sitting on top of a new pad. These picture will be used later to compare the pad after it's been used and abused.

I grabbed a black test panel for the first test. I wanted to create a uniform defect so I wet sanded an area with 3000 grit 3M Trizact Hookit 3 Inch Foam Discs.

This first test would show me how well this orange pad removes defects and finishes.

I didn't want to be easy on this pad so I opted to use my custom RUPES LHR 21ES with a 5 inch backing plate aka "The Pad Executioner". The large 21mm throw is notorious for destroying pads, especially at the "achilles heel" of most foam pads - the velco backing.

Btw the 5.5 inch pad lines up nicely with the RUPES 5 inch backing plate.

For the compound, I opted for Menzerna FG400.

For the first test, I added 3 pea sized drops of FG400 to the Buff and Shine pad. I used the timer on my cellular to track how long I've been using this pad.

The RUPES is on max speed (6).

After polishing the area, I let the polisher sit in a single area for most of the time. I varied pressure from heavy to light while making sure the pad was always rotating.

Here's a quick video demonstrating how I used the pad. (Keep in mind I only have 1 free hand while recording)



Here's the pad after 6 minute of pad abuse.

The pad was surprisingly cool and looked like new. Nothing out of the ordinary yet. So far so good...

3 more pea sized drops for another round. This is the 3rd set of compound applied to this pad so far.

24 minutes.... (I was happy we have a TV in the garage, so I could keep up with my soaps during this test ;))

I want to clarify....at NO point in this Torture Test was a nice to the pad. My goal is really to make this pad fail as soon as possible.

At around 28 minutes I received a text message. I learned that checking your text messages, stops the stopwatch on my phone. :(

This pad was starting to annoy me. It passed the first few test with flying colors.

At this point, I felt the pad was starting to mock me. It was getting personal, so I decided to bring out the FLEX PE14 Rotary.

It was time to show this pad who's boss. 3 more drops of FG400.

After a few section passes, I decided to crank it up. It was almost lunch time and Taco Tuesday nonetheless.

Now THIS is pad abuse! Watch the video to see the panel start to smoke from the heat generate.

At this point, the pad STILL looks like new. Now I'm impressed. I decided at this point to wash the pad in the washed machine to see if soaking the backing material would help deteriorate the adhesive, but before I washed it I wanted to give it one more test....

Time for this pad to meet the Sable.

Now it's time for the wash test. We don't recommend washing foam pads in washing machines since the entire backing material gets soaked with cleaned, which can damage the adhesive backing. But in this case, this is exactly what I wanted to do...

I used the last ounce of some geeks DP Microfiber Cleaner and put the empty gallon back instead of throwing it away.

If you have any suggestions on what I should do next to this pad, let me know in this thread. As of now, I think I'll just repeat all of my previous test and will update this thread with each new cycle. Maybe I'll destroy this pad by New Years*.

And this is why I only use B&S pads. I've never had one delaminate on me, and they see the washing machine and dryer as much as my towels do. I don't baby them at all, and they hold up perfectly. Good luck though..I'm really interested in seeing exactly what it will take to make one fail.
 
Love me the B&S pads as well. Although maybe your next stress test should be against your phone since its seems to have been through some abuse. =) Can't wait for the next round of tests.

Hahaha that's a Samsung Galaxy S. That's right, not a S5 or S4 or S3 or even S2. That's an original Samsung Galaxy S and it has been through a lot of abuse. I'm not upgrading until it dies.

HA! This is awesome. I'd suggest completely over saturating the pad with product and see how long until it breaks apart while spinning on the PE 14/speed setting 6 pressed against your test panel. That kind of abuse has got to destroy it!
 
BnS pads are the only foam pads i own. I have their MF pads as well but I actually like the megs MF pads more. but nothing beats the foam BnS
 
Alright I'm back from the garage after another round of torture tests. There's good news and bad news.

The bad news is I haven't been able to complete my goal. This pad is still kicking.

Always have used B&S love them. I can tell you one and only one problem I have ever had. the white "loop" has never come off the foam,, however I have had 2 different pads quit sticking to the hook of the backing pad. I asked a fellow detailer and he said occasionally he gets one that way also. I have never complained about it,, I just cut it into quarters to use by hand. but for some reason occasionally they fly off even with a brand new pad.

The green one is excellant for fine polish and AIO!
 
Nice review on the foam pads.

I have used BnS MF pads on my Rupes 15ES and 4/6 of them failed from over heating. User error on my end for buffing too long. The fibers had matte down after 5-6 passes and trapped heat in. When I switched to Rupes MF pads (exposure in the centre), the pads were not heating up as easily.

Lol I love when you ran over the pad. I think the next test should be a bullet and a gun.

On a serious note. So far I enjoy using my B&S pads. I've only used that and Meg's in my detailing life span. There is something about them that I love.
 
Alright, time for some more torture tests.

Here she is right out of the dryer. Washed in hot water and dried on high heat for maximum torture. (Disclaimer: We don't recommend washing your pads in hot water or high heat, this is only for torture purposes)

Here's the BLACKFIRE Compound 32oz bottle test again from the original post. This is the same bottle too.

For the next test, I used a FLEX XC3401. The 5.5 and 6 inch backing plates were too large for this 5.5 inch pad, so I used a 4 inch backing plate from the changeable backing plate system.

Per forum member Angus's request, I would be heavily saturating the pad with compound today to see if it would damage the pad/backing material faster.

After 8 section passes, I figured I would make a video again showing the pad being abuses in a single spot again.



Since I was putting this pad through the entire gauntlet of polishers, I figured the RUPES Duetto should be next. Same test, but this time with a Duetto.

Now for the next test, I wanted to see if the pad can still CUT. Can it still correct paint by removing swirl marks and scratches??

I put the pad on a Duetto and decided to clean the face of the pad. This would remove any built up residue on the face of the pad to see if it can still cut. It would also be a small torture test, a weaker pad would break apart while still warm from the Nylon bristles.

This is the last picture on my camera. As I'm looking at the pad, I can almost hear it laughing at me. WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO DAMAGE THIS PAD!?!??!?!

I say leave your test panel out in the sun (when the weather cooperates) and see how correcting on a hot test panel turns out. You could also try applying pressure at an angle while correcting.

That's a good idea but it's been cloudy with rain here the last few days. Hopefully the sky clears up soon.
