BMW E36 M3 detail

I was talking with a buddy at work today about water spots and how to get them off. This guy walking by, who obviously didn't know that he wasn't invited to the conversation, felt the need to put in his $.02. He said that wheel cleaner was the most effective way to remove waterspots and it was 100% safe for your car. He said that he ran a detailing business for years and years and never had any problems with that method.

Is there any truth to that? I've never tried it myself. I've never tried using engine degreaser as a window cleaner either. I don't know that I would trust wheel cleaner on my car. Is that guy for real? Anyone ever heard of that? It seemed odd to me.

HE RAN A DETAILING BUSINESS FOR YEARS.

Presumably that means he's no longer in the trade......I wonder why?:D

Doing something for ten years is not the same as being good at it. I have been trying to understand women for well over 10 years, still no success

LOL!! :D

Well, considering that most "off the shelf" wheel cleaners have acid content in them, there is no chance in hell I would use one on the paint.:down

I think most wheel cleanewrs also state not for use on paint???

and have be careful words onthem as well to that effect.

I don't know. There aren't very many wheel cleaners with acid anymore since ArmorAll got sued big time, and most are safe for painted surfaces since most factory wheels are clearcoated. But it does sound like killing ants with a cannon.

Sorry to disagree, but I really don't buy into the notion that most wheel cleaners can't harm paint. Sure they can. In fact many wheel cleaners can harm wheels. Many of the most experienced detailers here have had bad results with certain wheel cleaners and/or all purpose cleaners that many people claim are "safe." Why take the chance. Laters

wheel cleaner will harm paint, but yeah it will clean it too, just will clean it and sorta damage it too. If you're really brave you can use it and probably work out a routine to have it work, but don't try it alot (and car paint never gets as dirty as wheels do).

Insane you say? well my wheels are painted and clearcoated, way back in the wheel cleaner days I'd spray and scrub, eventually they turned yellow, so I broke out the AIO and layered the SG and now treat them like paint (which is a way better system) So yes I'm sure you could get away with it, but why would you want to if there are other choices available for you. :)

I wouldn't ever use it on my paint though. Goat urine might do the trick too but I sure as hell ain't tryin it. I'll just stick to my Klasse and paint cleaners. Thanks for the feedback on this. I'm glad I'm not the only one that  at that one.

Why would someone use wheel cleaner, when there are sooo many more products that will work just as good, and even better. Thanks to this forum I know better, the only acid that touches my paint is bird bombs, and those are eliminated on the spot with some FI

I don't disagree that wheel cleaners are for wheels or that they damage wheels. But I think most of the damage is done by spraying the cleaner on wheels that are still hot from driving.

Just bought this car a few weeks ago. It is a 1997 M3 that has actually been taken care of by the previous owners. It is high mileage, but you would never know it by looking at its condition.

The previous owner had this car sitting outside, so it definitely needed some attention with a claybar. He kept up with waxing the car, but it needed a good polish. The paint is in good shape, and it had paintwork done (front end) a few years back. The most time consuming part of the detail was the clay bar, taking around 3 hours, including some breaks. I wanted to do a final polish as there was not too much marring. The car is not perfect, but this little detail definitely helped!

I am still working on the interior, and will get pics up when I finish.
