Beer Time

Another Sunday, another new beer. Today it's an Avery Hog Heaven. This is a barleywine, but does remind me of an DIPA, very hoppy with sweet malts, and with an undertone of citrus. An excellent brew from Avery. Anyone else having a nice beer today?

I've had a hankering for these lately:

still in UK and having a murphy's this evening. a bit dull, I know, but we do what we can.

I'm the kind of guy that can eat the same thing every day, dull I guess. So here I am with another (my last ) Duvel.......

Gotta find a cheaper beer that isn't as hard to find yet still tastes as good....

Duvel is a great beer, but every day, LOL There should be all kinds of beer back east. Which styles do you like?

I had a few bottles left from my score last week. Today I enjoyed 4 unique brews while watching the Daytona 500:

1. Tres Blueberry Stout from Dark Horse Brewery in Michigan;

2. Dark Horse Special Reserve Black Bier;

3. Founder's Black Rye, also from Michigan; and

4. Founder's Red's Rye

Absolutely. In NJ you should have access to a ton of great east coast stuff. When I was in North Jersey for the holidays, I enjoyed Ramstein Winter Wheat (from High Point Brewery in Butler), Yuengling Black & Tan, and several different beers from Victory, Rogue, and Dogfish Head. And I know I saw all kinds of other stuff avaialble.

Abbey Ales, just not something I can run to a corner store and buy..... also they are in larger bottles than I prefer...

I have to start trying new beers.....

Jim,

Those look like some awesome brew's. I've got to try some Founder's, been hearing excellent stuff about them. Also been hearing some good thing's about Dark Horse.

FalconGuy,

Check out The Beer Advocate website. I'm sure there will be something over there you will find interesting.

Reading these posts makes me want to go to the local liquor stores tomorrow. I spent the last hour browsing Great Lakes Brewery's website and I must say I found it not only entertaining but also very informational for a guy who has never ventured away from macro brews. I sure hope I can find some better beer around here.

I am tired of all the nasty beer my friends insist on buying. I would have to say the best I've ever had was Amber Bock on tap. I also like Coors Light, but that is only because it has less of a metallic/bitter aftertaste than any other macros I've tried, and I've had a lot of different beers and almost all leave me disappointed.

WSU,

Do yourself a favor and checkout BeerAdvocate.com. There are beerfly reviews of local stuff in your area (stores, brewpubs, breweries.....) Tons of stuff to read.

(I'm sure that's rhetorical ;) ) Looks like a black & tan to me :idea A little Harp's Lager and Guinness to make that lovely pint.

Well, it's Bass on the bottom, but yeah. :)

There's a somewhat large microbrew near me, Old Dominion Brewing Co. They have some great beers, I try to pick up some of their stuff now and then. The only problem is it has to stay refridgerated, and many local grocery stores don't do that. I've gotten a few bad beers that way. And it's a little bit of a pain to stop by the brewery to pick beer up, though I find it's the best way and they generally have more selection of bottled beers. I have a hard time finishing off a growler in a day or two by myself, so that limits me to bottled stuff.

Well, tonight I'm having a 750ml of AleSmith's Wee Heavy. This is a very tasty Scotch Ale, sweet, malty, a nice smokyness aftertaste, what more could you ask for.

Warm rank nasty after taste but after a few drinks you won't notice the taste

Well tonight I ventured to the grocery store and purchased a six-pack of Samuel Adams Boston Lager. I must say perhaps lager styles are not for me. I had trouble getting over the after taste, which I assume is the hops? I like something with a good amount of fullness but as little bitter aftertaste as possible.

I joined the Beer Advocate. I still have some digging around to do, but I'm hoping to find a "taste matcher" of sorts to perhaps point me to my preferred style of beer.

WSU,

Glad you joined BA. Maybe start with the same style your use to drinking, but get some craft versions of it. Beer is an acquired taste, so also start off slowly when venturing into other styles. Bring up the topic on the BA forum and I'm sure other's will help you out. SA makes some awesome brew's, sorry you did not care for the Boston Lager.

Having an Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock tonite, clocks in at 12% ABV, sweet malty with some alcoholic undertones.

The other night I tried a Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold lager. This was much better on my palate than the SA Boston Lager. 5.80% ABV, I found it increasingly easier to drink as I progressed.
