Beer Time

Second brew tonight, another Ridgeway brew, Criminally Bad Elf, this is a English Barleywine, pretty tasty and the ABV is hidden very well.

My first brew tonight a classic Smoked Porter from Alaskan Brewing Co., this was the 2006 Vintage. If you have this in your area definitely pick some up. I've had the 02, 05, 06 vintages, and all were great, even after 5 years with the 02.

Closest thing I can get to Alaskan smoked porter is a homebrew clone recipe! I like the Stone Smoked Porter a lot, but from what I hear Alaskan Brewing Co. sets the bar for smoked porters.

Bourbon Barrel Stout I made 2 months ago. The head brewer over at Bluegrass Brewing in KY was helpful in pointing me in the right direction when formulating my recipe.

Nice combination roast from the stout with a touch of oak and bourbon on the finish...well balanced. I think this finished around 8% ABV.

walnuts,

The Stone Smoked Porter is also very tasty. I've had the Bluegrass Jefferson's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Stout and it was very tasty. I've said this before, if you can get your hands on some Central Waters brew's do it.

Tonight a delicious brew from Shmaltz Brewing Company, He'Brew Genesis 10:10, it's a American Strong Ale to me, not as hoppy as an Barleywine, but slightly sweet, malty, and a nice touch of hops and caramel. If you see some around your neck of the woods, grab some. Reminds me of an Stone AB.

Some tasty stuff, never had any Leffe yet.

Cusquena - Premium Import Dark Beer  , took about 5 sips before spilling it out. Had an extremely sweet taste, was like cotton candy/coke/licorice/alcohol mixed together, sounds good, but doesn't taste good. I cannot see how anybody could drink a bottle of this.

Sierra Nevada - Celebration Ale :xyxthumbs , every SN beer I have I love

And now the hidden jewel:

Anchor Brewing - "Our Special Ale" 2007, :bow , reviews weren't kidding, excellent beer, can definitely taste the "spice". Can't wait to try more from this brewery, pick this up if you can!

Happy Sunday,

Today a very delicious brew from AleSmith, Decadence 2006 Dead By Dawn, it's an American Strong Ale, 9.9% ABV, 750ml. Nice an malty, slight hop, some dark fruits, and caramel. This brew is a delight to drink, very smooth, you would not know it had so much alcohol in it. Highly recommended, if you can find it, LOL

Rogue Mocha Porter tonight, now I know why I've seen you mention Rogue before, very nice beer, smooth and nice Smokey/chocolate/coffee type flavor. :xyxthumbs

You must have had Leinenkugel.....that stuff is nasty and a poor example of a wheat beer.

If you wanta wheat beer go with a good German example (Paulaner Hefe-Weizen, Hacker-Pschorr Weisse) or a Belgian Witbier (Hoegaarden Wit)

John may have some input on Wheat beers also, they are not really my favorite.

American Pale Wheat Ale

Description:

An Americanized version of a Hefe Weizen, these beers range within the pale to golden range in color. Reminiscent of a Hefe Weizen in appearance, unless filtered. Long-lasting head with a light to medium body, higher carbonation is proper. German Weizen flavors and aromas of banana esters and clove-like phenols will not be found. Most use a substantial percentage of wheat malt. Hop character will be low to high but most are moderate in bitterness. There may be some fruitiness from ale fermentation though most examples use of a fairly neutral ale yeast, resulting in a clean fermentation with little to no diacetyl.

Often served with a lemon wedge (popularized by Americans), to either cut the wheat or yeast edge, which many either find to be a flavorful snap ... or an insult and something that damages the beer's taste and head retention.

Examples: Sam Adams Summer Ale, 3 Floyd's Gumballhead, Sam Adams Hefeweizen, Magic Hat Hocus Pocus.

Hefeweizen

Description:

A south German style of wheat beer (weissbier) made with a typical ratio of 50:50, or even higher, wheat. A yeast that produces a unique phenolic flavors of banana and cloves with an often dry and tart edge, some spiciness, bubblegum or notes of apples. Little hop bitterness, and a moderate level of alcohol. The "Hefe" prefix means "with yeast", hence the beers unfiltered and cloudy appearance. Poured into a traditional Weizen glass, the Hefeweizen can be one sexy looking beer.

Often served with a lemon wedge (popularized by Americans), to either cut the wheat or yeast edge, which many either find to be a flavorful snap ... or an insult and something that damages the beer's taste and head retention.

Examples: Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, Schneider Weisse (Original), Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse.
