Any thoughts on using vertical polishers?

Heh heh, cars like the MR2 and my 1st-gen RX-7 sure seem like miniatures compared to even pretty small "more modern" cars, huh?

They sure do. Funny thing is, "more modern" is not neccessarily better. RX-7's are things of beauty, especially thier last generation (I was heavily disappointed that I couldn't own one as I couldn't fit in one without having to put my head in my lap). There is nothing comparable to it nowadays. MR2s were great in their own way and fact that Toyota did one better with MR2 Spyders is exception rather than a rule, end even that is now gone. "Modern replacements" are not neccessarily faster nor handling better, and even though they grew bulkier and heavier inside space is not any bigger, if it isn't smaller. I still can't fit in RX-8. I can't fit in 350Z. Where is the sense there? :nixweiss

ZoranC- While we're going off-topic :o Oh just get me going on today's cars, I can't find a single thing I'd want (except a Bentley) so I'm keeping my deered S8. Bought the '97 M3 because all the "better" newer cars left me cold.

My wife had one of the last-gen RX-7s (R1 package for her daily driver  ) and she loved it, but I couldn't fit in the thing either, at least not well enough to heel & toe. This first-gen one I have just makes me smile, even if it is about as fast as schoolbus (and it makes me feel like I'm a college-age kid again, I really bought it just for the time-machine factor).

Back on-topic, the more I rotary away on the M3 the more I think I'd like that vertical polisher for the sides but not the horizontal surfaces.

I too feel indifferent toward majority of new cars and cars that I don't feel indifferent about is way out of my price range, so I sometimes wonder could it be that my taste became more refined with time and that is why they don't do anything for me?

Still, that doesn't explain one step forward one step back that industry seems to be doing. First they increase engine to increase desirability and therefore sales. Then they have to increase transmission and body to handle bigger engine. Then they have to increase price. Which results in zero net gain and getting less of a car for same money or same of a car for more money. Are they spinning us in circles on purpose?

In any case, for a while now I am commenting how what I have now is probably it, that I don't see myself buying another car easily if what I have keeps on serving me. That doesn't mean I will not neccessarily get another vehicle if I end up being able to. It means I want "return on my investment" which means it is highly unlikely it will be a typical production car. So, if I end up getting something it will be something along lines of Ariel Atom or Caterham. It will be a car by definition but not car car. It will be back to the basics, back to pure pleasure of driving and to heck with what automotive companies are trying to sell us. It will be all about bringing huge grin back on the face and in the heart, just like I felt when I first sat in my MR2-S on a sunny day, pulled the top down, and took it around curve.

I still didn't have opportunity to get to it, but I am slowly getting there, other supplies are steadily coming in. In the meantime I know I shouldn't have issue on top half of the panels on my car, but need to see how lower half, one that is curving away from me, can be worked on.

ZoranC- Keep me apprised as you get acquainted with the new polisher. I've had to suspend work on the M3 as other stuff is taking priority...put the Makita back in its box and the Hi-Temp stuff back on the shelf :o

I think the vertical might be just great for the panels you're wondering about. You shouldn't have much trouble if you have different size pads/plates on hand. Just be careful when you need to really angle the polisher to follow the contours, and keep the speed down for stuff like that.

And yeah, today's cars with their technology-for-its-own-sake are just ridiculous IMO. Heh heh, I think I've grown too old for an Atom though...
